slThe Media Equation: For ‘House of Cards,’ Using Big Data to Guarantee Its Popularityhttp://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/25/business/media/for-house-of-cards-using-big-data-to-guarantee-its-popularity.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

.

- can Netflix use big data to predict hits?
- House of Cards the most streamed piece of content in the United States and 40 other countries, says Netflix
- Netflix has 27M subscribers in US, 33M worldwide. Many of those had streamed David Fincher movies from beginning to end. HOC star Kevin Spacey had popular streams. original British version of “House of Cards” too. data showed HOC was a good investment, probable popularity.
- Netflix looks at 30M “plays” a day, logs pauses, rewinds, skips, looks at millions of ratings by subscribers, 3M searches, time of day shows watched, which devices.
- viewer-submitted tags work as metadata descriptors, used to recommend other shows for individual experience. Now Netflix is using that data to pick original programming. “There are 33 million different versions of Netflix,” said Joris Evers, the company’s director of global corporate communications.
- many diff trailers for HOC based on what you were watching on Netflix to appeal to you
- John Landgraf, prez and GM of FX, says big data can't do it all. “Data can only tell you what people have liked before, not what they don’t know they are going to like in the future,” he said. “A good high-end programmer’s job is to find the white spaces in our collective psyche that aren’t filled by an existing television show,”
- amazon reportedly leaning on similar data to choose original programming
- are we headed for creative process determined by stats? and is the data skewing toward what we want or what netflix wants us to want?

Hey TNT crew,

This is in reference to Tom's accusation of statistical flimflammery on the Cowen & Co. report that nearly a quarter of Netflix subscribers have dropped pay TV. I'm a statistics professor and your comments were my example in today's class on estimating proportions from samples. 80 people who dropped pay TV out of 346 Netflix subscribers surveyed makes us 95% confident that the true proportion of Netflix subscribers who drop pay TV is between 19 percent and 28% (a four percent margin of error). Even at the low end, that would be a surprising number. My class of 35 19 year-olds thought you should know.

Hello guys , just thought I might put my 2 cents in about Google Glass. I have less than 14% sight and I was hoping that Google Glass would be able to store a bank of pictures of my friends and have them tagged so my glasses will inform me if any of my friends are nearby. Or even beep to let me know that there is something at head height, which my white cane is not going to sense and I am about to get a bloody nose. Thanks for your time.
