iaWalt Mossberg has put together a review of Republic Wireless. That's the company that gives you unlimited data, voice and texts for $19 per month without a contract. Mossberg says that the service isn't perfect. Calls are made over WiFi and over the Sprint network, however, there is a lack of seamless handoff - meaning if you start a call on WiFi and move to cellular, the call drops. Mossberg also wasn't a fan of the sole handset offered, the Motorola Defy XT. http://allthingsd.com/20130219/for-19-an-unlimited-phone-plan-some-flaws/

Google expands Glass pre-orders to 'creative individuals' with #ifihadglass competition
http://www.theverge.com/2013/2/20/4006748/google-project-glass-explorer-edition-pre-order

.

- Google expanding Glass pre-orders through a contest
- The contest works like this: you get 50 words or less, you can include up to 5 photos and a video (15 seconds max).
- You explain what you would do if you had glass w/ the hashtag #ifihadglass
- You can use Twitter or Google+ to apply
- Open to US residents only
- Oh and if you're chosen, you still have to pay $1500
- With the contest, Google showed off a video demo of Google glass (again, it's from a first person POV)
- Video: shows interaction with glass by saying "Okay glass" and a command. The display looks very much like the Google Now cards. Shows hangouts, recording videos, navigation, getting flight details
Q: What do we think of the contest? Opinion on Glass after seeing yet another potential demo video?

slSpotify pushing labels to lower costs, open up free service to phoneshttp://www.theverge.com/2013/2/19/4006194/spotify-negotiate-cheaper-music-licenses-create-free-mobile-trials

.

- The Verge says managers at Spotify will ask for big price breaks from the music labels for licensing deals, and rights to extend its free pricing tier to mobile devices.
- in talks w Warner, will meet w Sony, Universal soon
- sources on spotify: 5M paying subscribers and 20M total users worldwide. 70% of Spotify’s revenues pays music-licensing fees while another 20% covers customer acquisition. just 10% to pay all of the company’s other costs, zero profit.
- some artists already claim spotify doesn't pay out enough in royalties. Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Sony are all companies all sell music at razor-thin margins or even at a loss in order to push hardware/services.
- sources: Spotify also wants to extend its ad-supported free tier for mobile devices, offering "more of a taste" than the current 30 day trial.
question: industry wants to see streaming succeed... album downloads aren't making up for loss in CD sales. does the industry have to bend to spotify?

As a frequent traveler to Asia, I can attest that MS Office is easily one of the most pirated pieces of software, among both home users and small businesses. I wonder if MS has simply decided that this will be the last version of Office easily available as a stand alone box at all. MS clearly wants people to go on the subscription model, both to even out their revenue stream and also as an anti-piracy measure, and their current Office subscription is pretty compelling. 5 easily transferable licenses across multiple platforms serves the power user or family upgrade very well.

I would speculate that most "normals" probably buy their copies when they buy a new computer, just as most of them only buy new Windows copies as part of an OEM install. Therefore from that perspective they might be willing to forgo a few boxed sales and some further leakage to Google Docs, if their overall revenue projection is better

- Allen
"In the event that a customer buys the Office 2013 software and installs it on a PC that fails under warranty, the customer can contact support to receive an exemption to activate the Office 2013 software on the replacement PC," the blog explained.

I would like to continue the discussion in episode 693 about the Google Stores. This would be a great move, Google could put a face to their business, and like Tom alluded to, Google could be the first store that doesn't care if you buy anything. All thanks to search. Also Google could demo their 1 GB Internet in Kansas City, to build up some more mind share. Lastly Google could offer local shops tips on AdWords, and most shockingly Google could sell Apple products. They pay a lot of money to be the default search engine, and Google would rather you buy an iPhone from them, than be tempted by a Windows Phone at the AT&T store. Larry Page stop what you are doing right now, and call up Mall of America.
