.

- China now world's largest market for "active" smart devices, according to new data released from mobile analytics firm Flurry. China is expected to account for 246M active Android and iOS smartphones and tablets by EOM, compared with 230M in the U.S. US was still on top in January.
- Flurry says this isn't a fluke, China will keep top spot. only other co. to come close in population is India, w install base of just 19M smart devices in January, making it tied with Russia and Brazil for 9th place overall.
- meanwhile iPhone Mini rumors keep rolling in - Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty says iphone priced in the mid-300's would add another 20% to the 10% Chinese market share the iPhone 5 has. But a deal with China Mobile (largest carrier) is also key- currently still only avail via China Unicom & China Telecom.
- could play out like this: Apple launches new Mini model. 2nd, legislation for TD-LTE licenses and number portability could pass later this year or in 2014. China Mobile might then want to subsidize higher-end smartphones on a TD-LTE network.
- Huberty: "Even in a scenario of low 40% gross margin and 1/3 iPhone cannibalization rate (flattening legacy iPhone shipment growth), which we view as conservative, the iPhone Mini adds incremental revenue and gross profit dollars."

- The tool is in beta and may hang
- has been tested with WinRar, 3D Pinball "Space Cadet" from Win 95

Hello TNT Crew

I was just listening to episode 681 wherein you discussed HP planning a new mobile device using Android instead of their own WebOS. The question was posed whether they should stick to stock android, or alter it as many vendors do.

They should flavor it with a sprinkling of WebOS.

As a Palm Pre user, I was very happy. When I first switched to Android, I was disappointed. While the hiring of Matias Duarte seems to have helped Android's user experience, there are *still* some things I miss about WebOS that presumably cannot be replicated in Android due to patents; which HP now owns.

If HP were to take what made WebOS's user experience distinct and apply it to their own Android devices, it would set them apart, and win the hearts of Palm loyalists.

Thanks for the shows,

-Tyler

Tom and Posse,

The problem I'm seeing for the Wii U is that Nintendo still refuses or is unable to make kind of compelling online content. They still have nothing that can compete to Xbox Live as a comprehensive gaming and entertainment network. I still hold that if they had been aggressive with online support they could have kept the original Wii a stronger product, if only so that you didn't have to have everyone in one location to get your Wii Sports on.

Another problem is that they introduced a singular piece of hardware without creating a truly compelling use case for it. Its been stated before but Wii Sports was the perfect game to come with the original Wii because everyone immediately saw how awesome and fun the system could be. Having played a couple of Wii U launch titles, they're fine and look very nice, but there's no hook (I especially thing the game pad dynamic is just silly for Mario U).

All that being said, if they come out with a dungeon crawl creator tomorrow where the person with the game pad is the GM and all the other PCs can play online, I will go out and buy the system and pay for all my old D&D buddies to boot. But that's also the problem, I can think of a lot of niche games that could make the Wii U's hardware shine, but will there be enough niches to feed the big developers?

Rich from Lovely Cleveland
