slSoftware that tracks people on social media created by defence firmhttp://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/feb/10/software-tracks-social-media-defence

.

- The Guardian got hold of a video showing an "extreme-scale analytics" system created by defense contractor Raytheon (based in Mass). gathers information about people from social services like Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare. Raytheon says it has not sold the software – named Riot, or Rapid Information Overlay Technology – to any clients, but says it shared with US government and industry as part of a joint research and development effort, in 2010, to help build a national security system capable of analysing "trillions of entities" from cyberspace.
- Raytheon's "principal investigator" Brian Urch that photographs users post on social networks sometimes contain latitude and longitude details – automatically embedded by smartphones within "exif header data." Riot pulls out this information, showing not only the photographs posted onto social networks by individuals, but also the location at which the photographs were taken.
Ginger McCall, an attorney at the Washington-based Electronic Privacy Information Centre: "Social networking sites are often not transparent about what information is shared and how it is shared," McCall said. "Users may be posting information that they believe will be viewed only by their friends, but instead, it is being viewed by government officials or pulled in by data collection services like the Riot search."

iaSmart TVs have a serious communication problem
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/02/smart-tvs-have-a-serious-communication-problem/

.

- ArsTechnica has a piece about SmartTvs by Casey Johnston that says the reason they don't really work is due to having no good way to interact with them
- The piece discusses how TV manufacturers are putting more and more options on the remote instead of improving the remote control scheme
- Which method works best? Keypad, keyboard, trackpad? Many remotes have all of them meaning - the user has to find out which one is the most effective
- Characterizes TV as one of the stranger devices we use - it's at a distance unlike our PCs or phones

Q: Is it an issue of the remotes or software that create problems for SmartTVs?

Hi guys,
I was listening to episode 684 while returning from a trip to Disneyland and heard Iyaz say how Apple may be the one company to push mobile payments to a everyday use. As I thought about this, I believe he may be on the right track. At Disneyland, when you go though the entry gates they are using a iPod touch with a similar case as the ones used in the Apple store. They scan multi-day passes, and if it is the first day using it they take your picture with the device to associate you with your multi-day pass. Then every time you enter the park and they scan it again, your picture shows up on the iPod touch and they can see it is you using the multiple day pass and not someone else.

I thought about this, and wouldn't it be great if you could use passbook for your park ticket, room charge card for purchases, fast pass tickets for rides. Hopefully this is the beginning of more advances to come, and if it means using passbook or an app, thats fine. I already have ditched my wallet for a iphone case that holds my drivers license and a couple of credit cards, if I could ditch the credit cards and be able to use passbook every where that takes credit cards, that would be nice.

Maybe it is going to take companies like Apple and Disney to push this technology into mainstream use.

Love the show!

Hey TNT Crew,

Listening to your discussions about the Playstation being a 'nerve center' made me think about a product that's available in the Japanese market now. It's called Nasne (pronounced Nah - Sue - Ne, as in Neptune) [http://www.jp.playstation.com/nasne/], a network digital video recorder which can send media to laptops, tablets, smartphones or your Vita, up to 2 at a time. You can also set the DVR to record shows using your smartphone over the internet.

What I think the announcement will be is basically that built into the Playstation so that when you turn on your TV, you can do everything (Blu-ray, TV, Games) through the Playstation console and your media will be available on any device in your house. A pretty nice offering, but I think they could do more...

What if they took the Playstation, added the Nasne DVR functionality, made the streaming work over the internet for live and pre-recorded shows (similar to a slingbox) and add a unified search function (like a google tv) for movies and television shows across in the TV guide as well as in different applications like netflix and hulu (which are both available on the PS3 now). Basically making a Playstation-GoogleTV-Slingbox. Hook-up an external drive with all your media and have access to it anywhere you go.

Food for thought,
Steve Conning (Tokyo, Japan)
http://www.jp.playstation.com/nasne/
