tmSony's earnings for Q4 are more bad news, but not as bad as it has been, so that's good news? Depends on the analyst. A net loss of 10.8 billion yen was the 8th quarterly loss in a row but much lower than Q4 2011's 159 billion yen loss. Sony also promised to be profitable for the fiscal year which ends in March. Slower sales of game consoles and TVs were balanced by a weaker yen and profits from the movie and music divisions.http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/07/sony-posts-a-net-loss-of-115-million-for-q3-on-slightly-higher/

slThe Mayer effect continues....Sources say Google is set to begin running some of its AdSense display ads on Yahoo sites, and will become one of several ad networks Yahoo uses to fill some of its pages. That means Yahoo and Google will have a partnership that Google already knows well: Google gets access to some of their unsold inventory, and Google inserts small ads it runs on behalf of its advertisers. http://allthingsd.com/20130206/coming-soon-to-yahoo-ads-from-google/

iaMicrosoft wants Gmail users to know they're getting Scroogled again. A Microsoft-commissioned survey found that 70% did not know whether any major email service provider scanned their emails for the purposes of targeted ads. 88% thought that there should be an "opt out" if a service did scan their mail. If you didn't know, Gmail is the only major service that scans your email and targets ads based on them. Microsoft plans to use this info in a campaign where it hopes to win folks over to Outlook.comhttp://marketingland.com/microsoft-attacks-gmail-on-privacy-in-latest-scroogled-campaign-32813

tmMark Shuttleworth, founder and CEO of Canonical, makers of Ubuntu, told the Wall Street Journal that smartphones running Ubuntu will be available in October. App developers should get access to the OS later this month, which will run on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Ubutu's smartphone version of the OS will use native apps, meaning developers can create a single app for the PC and the phone. http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57568089-94/ubuntu-os-smartphones-to-hit-stores-in-october/

slOUYA CEO Julie Uhrman tells Engadget that there will be a new OUYA next year, and the year after that, unlike the traditional game console model, where new hardware ships in five- to seven-year generational increments. "Our strategy is very much similar to the mobile strategy," says Uhnman. "There will be a new OUYA every year. There will be an OUYA 2 and an OUYA 3." http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/07/ouya-annual/

iaData research firm Canalys says that Apple owns 20% of the global PC market in the fourth quarter of 2012. Of course, no one will get upset with this figure since Canalys counts tablets in its "PC" metric. Apple moved 23 million iPads and 4 million Macs. HP and Lenovo shipped 15 million PCs each. Meanwhile on the mobile front, ComScore says Apple's got 36.3% of the U.S. smartphone market in December of 2012. Android is still the top dog with 53.4%.http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/02/06/apple-grabs-more-than-20-of-global-pc-market-in-q4-2012

slWikipad will debut in the spring for $249, and will bring console-style gaming to its 7-inch Android tablet with video-game-controller-style buttons, along with the 10-inch tablet Wikipad previously introduced. “We wanted to get Wikipad into our community’s hands, and what we found was that the smaller, 7-inch form factor just seemed right,’” Wikipad president of sales Fraser Townley says. “The smaller frame delivers an aggressive price while keeping the same amazing specs.”http://venturebeat.com/2013/02/07/wikipads-7-inch-android-gaming-tablet-will-hit-retailers-in-spring-for-249/

tmGreenlight Capital's David Einhorn has changed from ardent Apple fan to possible litigant. Einhorn said Thursday he is suing Apple over the company's move to eliminate preferred shares of stock. Einhorn wants preferred shares made permanent with dividends. Apple has been criticized for years for keeping a large cash reserve and not issuing dividends. CEO Tim Cook was behind the first dividend issued by Apple in years and now it seems shareholders want more.http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2013/02/07/einhorn-to-sue-apple-over-plan-to-discard-preferred-stock/

iaBotnets beware for you faced the combined might of Microsoft and Symantec! The two companies have taken down the Bamital botnet. Symantec started tracking the botnet since 2009 then worked with Microsoft to shut down "all known components vital to the botnet's operation." Bamital would hijack search engine results and all major search engines including Bing and Google were affected. tmSony’s Hirai Sells Property Instead of TVs as Revival Stallshttp://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-02-07/sony-unexpectedly-posts-eighth-quarterly-loss-on-tv-demand-slump.html

sliPads (Thanks To The Mini) Were 1 In 6 ‘PCs’ Shipped, Tablets One-Third, And Windows RT Didn’t Even Break 1M: Canalyshttp://techcrunch.com/2013/02/06/ipads-thanks-to-the-mini-accounted-for-1-in-6-pcs-tablets-one-third-of-all-pcs-shipped-in-q4-canalys/

.

- Analysts at Canalys: Q4 of 2012, 1 in every 3 PCs shipped was a tablet. iPad accounted for half of tablets shipped, or 1 in every 6 PCs shipped.
- Canalys defines tablet : any computing device with screen of 7 inches or more. By combining PC and tablet numbers, Canalys says worldwide PC shipments are up. by 12% from last year to 134M units for the quarter.
- Gartner research data from January noted that Q4 PC shipments were down by 5% from last year — but did not count tablets.
- Apple shipped 27M PC units in Q4, giving it a 20.1% share of the market. HP #2 at 15M PCs, for an 11.2% share of the market. Lenovo right behind HP, only shipped 200,000 fewer units.
- this is first quarter where Apple’s iPad has not accounted for more than 50% of all tablets shipped — it was 49%, with Android accounting for 46%.
- Windows RT failed to break even 1 million units at 720,000 shipped. “The outlook for Windows RT appears bleak,” noted Tim Coulling, Canalys senior analyst. He believes the only way out for this is for Microsoft to drastically reduce the licensing price, cutting further into its margins on the product.

iaOUYA following mobile model: 'There will be a new OUYA every year'http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/07/ouya-annual/

.

Ouya founder promises new $99 console every year, better game discovery
http://www.theverge.com/2013/2/7/3962898/ouya-julie-uhrman-interview-dice-2013

.

- Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman told Engadget that "There will be a new Ouya every year. There will be an Ouya 2 and an Ouya 3."
- Each version will be priced at $99, "If we could do it for less than $99, we would,"
- The company's strategy is "similar to the mobile strategy."
- She said the company would "take advantage of faster, better processors" and "take advantage of prices falling."
- Uhrman said that games are tied to the user, not the box

Q: We've seen a yearly refresh cycle for lots of tech, but What do we think about a yearly refresh cycle for a game console?
- Uhrman assured us that "all the games will be backward compatible" going forward.
- Uhrman could only tell TheVerge that her company is "in conversations" with Google, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon about accessing their service
- Discovery: she wants to curate the Ouya app store based on engagement metrics rather than sales data.

slFreedomPop Adds Social Sharing, And $4.3 Millionhttp://www.forbes.com/sites/tomiogeron/2013/02/07/freedompop-adds-social-sharing-and-4-3-million/

.

- raised 4.3M from investors and added social sharing to service
- devices: 4G iPod Sleeve, 4G iPhone 4/4S Sleeve (which is being held up by FCC due to antenna design element), mi-fi mobile hotspot, USB dongle and a recently announced home broadband router. also planning to release an LTE clip for tablets. The Clip’s LTE service will be provided by Sprint Nextel‘s network and is expected to be released in the second half of this year.
- concept: users get 500MB of free monthly Internet access, and bonuses for spreading the word. users can share portions of their data allotments with each other, and can score an additional 10MB for each new user they refer to the service.
- back in july freedompop announced the 4G iPod Touch case. WiMax mobile hotspot that’s been designed to wrap around a device.
- finally rolling out the social stuff- instead of letting unused data from a plan go to waste because it wasn’t used before the end of a bill cycle, users can give that bandwidth away to friends in need in 50MB chunks.
- users can log-in with Google to find other friends already using the service. Since people get more free data when they have more friends this should encourage viral growth.
- On FreedomPop’s dashboard people can see a list of their friends with a graphic that shows how much free data each friend has left that month. There’s also a “Give” or “Get” button next to each name. So people can help those who are running out, or request data from those who haven’t used much. Or if someone is traveling, for example, they can ask friends to give them some of their data.

iaKatzenberg Says Mobile Viewers Will Pay by ‘Inch’
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-02-05/katzenberg-says-mobile-viewers-will-pay-by-inch-.html

.

- Jeffrey Katzenberg, DreamWorks Animation CEO said that in the future "people will pay [for content] by the square inch."
- “If a cell phone version is 75 cents, you’ll get 350 million people in India to pay that.”
- He thinks that this model would mean more consumption in developing markets like India where cell phones are used by many for entertainment

Q: How does the paying by size concept strike you? Does it seem like something that would make its way to the U.S.?

A listener who chose not to be identified responded to the email a few days ago from the IT guy who said they were unable to lock down their systems because "Susie Secretary" insisted on her cat toolbar. The listener said, "I work in an 80K person company where the PCs are locked down and it's often extremely difficult to do normal work. For example on a locked down PC I can't delete an alias icon from my desktop, and I can't add a printer. This has nothing to do with a cat toolbar, it has to do with enormous lost productivity. I know this is a balance between security and convenience, but the IT guy who wrote in should never be allowed to work with end users because his attitude shows he has no idea how hard it is to work in a locked down environment.

Greetings TNT Crew,

In yesterday's show you mentioned that Vine had been slapped with a 17+ rating, which puts the app in the same league as 500px and Tumblr. What I find interesting about this entire ordeal is that Twitter's own app has yet to receive the same 17+ rating even though it's incredibly easy to search for adult materials in Twitter. I guess the question is, would Apple willingly ruffle the feathers (pun not intended) of one of their partners?

Thank you for providing the much needed entertainment during my daily commute,
Jesse, Ohio
