tmKim Dotcom has gone to the other extreme with his new Mega file sharing service, removing legitimate files with fake DMCA takedown notices. The reason? An effort to combat Search-Mega.me, an unauthorized search engine of files available on Mega. The search engine did not have a takedown policy and was using the Mega logo. Dotcom admits he probably should have contacted the search engine first.http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57567055-93/dotcoms-mega-removing-legitimate-files/

HBO Go Is Coming to Apple TV. Why Isn’t Everything Coming to Apple TV?http://allthingsd.com/20130131/hbo-go-is-coming-to-apple-tv-why-isnt-everything-coming-to-apple-tv/

.

- Bloomberg says the AppleTV will get HBO Go by mid-2013
- Bloomberg is citing "two people familiar with the plans."
- It'd work the same as HBO Go does everywhere - you've got to be a cable or satellite subscriber
- AppleTV already has Netflix and Hulu Plus
- HBO Go already works on Xbox and Roku

Q: Apart from the occasional app that shows up on the AppleTV, do you expect Apple to open up the Apple TV to developers?

slPath reaches settlement with FTC, agrees to pay $800,000 fine for COPPA violations.http://gigaom.com/2013/02/01/path-reaches-settlement-with-ftc-agrees-to-pay-800000-fine-for-coppa-violations/

.

- Path has reached a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission on alleged violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protections Act (COPPA). Path will pay $800,000 and has removed about 3,000 accounts from the network. Path must establish a comprehensive privacy program and to obtain independent privacy assessments every other year for the next 20 years.
- underage path users were discovered during FTC investigation into the privacy issue over the uploading of iPhone address books to Path’s servers without the permission of the individuals.
- Morin says typical Path user is about 25-years-old. The company has about 6M registered users
morin's blog post: we ask users’ their birthdays during the process of creating an account. However, there was a period of time where our system was not automatically rejecting people who indicated that they were under 13. Before the FTC reached out to us, we discovered and fixed this sign-up process qualification, and took further action by suspending any under age accounts that had mistakenly been allowed to be created.
- sharing with family a big push for path. last month morin said china was a huge market and thought it had to do a lot with tight-knit families. how does path grow this segment if you can't be under 13?

Kim Dotcom: Mega Search Engines Have to Play by the Ruleshttp://torrentfreak.com/kim-dotcom-mega-search-engines-have-to-play-by-the-rules-130201/

.

- yesterday we mentioned search-mega.me indexing Mega files.
- over last few days, Mega users with legal files found them unavailable in their Mega accounts for alleged copyright violations. In all cases this happened after these users published links to the files elsewhere on the Internet.
- today Kim Dotcom says Mega itself is behind this, had to issue a bunch of fake DMCA notices shut down of Search-Mega.me because the site didn’t have a takedown policy, which offended some copyright holders, and the site used Mega’s logo as well as a similar design which may lead the public to think that it was affiliated with Mega.
- Dotcom told TorrentFreak that Mega was concerned about the massive press attention the search engine received, with articles often focusing on the many copyrighted files that were indexed. In addition, Mega also received complaints from rightsholders about the search index.
- Dotcom admits he should have just gone to search-mega.me and asked them to change how they do things
Dotcom says that Mega wont be policing the Internet, but will respond to “rogue sites” if needed.

“You will be seeing us acting aggressively towards sites that try to mimic Mega and use our logos. We’ll also go after sites that don’t have any takedown facilities, because that’s the biggest problem,” he told TorrentFreak.

iaDetails of Google's Project Glass revealed in FCC reporthttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-21290934

.

Google Glass Explorer Edition arrives at the FCC
http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/31/google-glass-fcc/

.

- More information about Google Project Glass is out, this time it's from an FCC document just published
- Project Glass would send audio to the wearer using an "integral vibrating element that provides audio to the user via contact with the user's head,"
- That sounds a bit like bone conduction and would mean you wouldn't need to wear headphones to hear audio if you wore the glasses.
- Data would be sent to the screen via WiFi and bluetooth
- Project Glass would also have internal storage to store video

Q: Bone conduction isn't new, but will that make it easier for people to get into Google glasses since they don't have to jam earbuds in their ears too?

Hello TNT Crew,

Yesterday Tom raised the question of why there are no B&N stores in airports.

The reason is rent and profit margins.

I used to work for one of the major players in airport retail.

Retail space in airports is rented by a percentage of sales. The rent percentages are often so high that book sales are actually a loss to the store because their profit margin on books is less than the rental percent. Every newspaper and most magazines sold in airport shops are sold at a net loss to the shop for the same reason.

Airport shops make their profit on gifts and such and that's why everything is so expensive at airports.

Regards,
TJ
For our company the book only shops we operated were basically not profitable or break even and we were forced to have them in order to get the retail contract. They were subsidized by the other shops. We had multiple shops in the same airport with different "brand" identities to make it appear that the shops were not all run by the same company but we ran 90% of the shops.

Tom and Posse,

While I think Blackberry did what they needed to do with the BB10 launch, it seems like they could have been at this spot years ago if they had any kind of vision in leadership in the past. Not to beat a dead horse, but if RIM had purchased Palm they could have had a modern, critically lauded operating system that functions very similarly to one they've spent the last 3 years developing in QNX (which they bought three weeks before Palm sold to HP).

It just seems like Blackberry is trying to play catch-up after sitting out for 3 years when they could have been in the running with a relatively competitive product the whole time (not to say WebOS was perfect, but it was better than BB7; and imagine a Pre with a Bold keyboard, it almost makes me forget the Pixi). I really hope BB10 does keep them afloat, on a technical and UI level I find it refreshing, lets hope the change from RIM to Blackberry also leaves behind their frustrating mismanagement.
