And the Award for the Next HBO Goes to...http://www.gq.com/entertainment/movies-and-tv/201302/netflix-founder-reed-hastings-house-of-cards-arrested-development?currentPage=1

.

- Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos spoke to GQ
- He talked about his $300M budget for original programming
- The most notable quote: "The goal," says Sarandos, "is to become HBO faster than HBO can become us."
- Netflix doesn't require TV pilots — a single, introductory episode intended as a proof-of-concept — for creatives to prove the viability of their wares, it commits to full seasons upfront

Q: Is it easier for Netflix to become HBO than it is the other way around?
Feb 1st: the whole season of House of Cards is available
The GQ article asks: How important are episode recaps and live-tweeting and the shared experience of everyone watching together?

Content maker friendly:
- "The idea that they wouldn't just pull the plug midway was totally thrilling," says Kohan, who spent years in the network trenches before making Weeds for Showtime.

slMicrosoft's Steve Ballmer Does Not Fear Dropbox or an Office-less IPadhttp://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-01-29/microsofts-steve-ballmer-does-not-fear-dropbox-or-an-office-less-ipad

.

- on office 13 and making cloud product for something 1B ppl already use: "100M sounds like a pretty small number to me, actually. We’ve got a lot more Office users. And actually if you even want to go to the cloud, we have a lot of Hotmail and SkyDrive users. I’m not beating on Dropbox. They’re a fine little startup and that’s great."
- on 1B users: "That number is going to grow. That’s sort of the miracle of economic development, isn’t it? More and more people enter the class of information workers and knowledge workers. More and more students getting more and more education"
- on lack of office for ipad: "I have nothing to say on that topic. We’re very glad with the product, very happy with the product that we’re putting in market. It makes sense on the devices like the Mac and the PC."
- Verge notes: Ballmer has laughed at Chrome OS and the iPhone, and claimed you need to be a computer scientist to use Android. However, Microsoft has had to spend money on acquiring companies over the years to catch up and better strengthen its own products. The software maker acquired Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion and Yammer last year for $1.2 billion — both products are being tightly integrated into Office.

Surface Pro disk space to fall a long way short of what you'd expecthttp://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/01/surface-pro-disk-space-to-fall-a-long-way-short-of-what-youd-expect/

.

- Microsoft's 64GB Surface Pro (Tablet running Win8 Pro) will have 23GB free out of the box
- A MS spokesperson confirmed that with the Verge
- the 128GB model will have 83GB free
- Where's all that space going? Windows 8, pre-installed apps, and a recovery partition taking up 41GB in total
- Users have the option to free up space by "creating a backup bootable USB and deleting the recovery partition,"

Q: Is this a big deal when the Surface Pro has expansion options? Does this show that a desktop OS on a tablet is a bad idea?

Hi. I work in a BigBox store, and here’s what I’ve seen;

1. Chrome books are being seen as Nexus 7's with keyboards. We couldn't keep the tablets in stock over Xmas, and have yet to recover. Consumers have seen what can be done on their Android phones, and are applying the lessons.

2. More than a few of us actively discouraged customers from buying the Kindle or Nook in favor of a generic Android tablet. Google or Amazon isn't going anywhere, but you could have said the same for Borders a decade ago. Wouldn’t bet on Barnes & Noble to be around in half that time.

3. Office 365 works on " select mobile devices," not Android, and not iOS. Even accessing SkyDrive is a bit wonky - you can view content, but you'll need a third-party application to download the doc, edit it, and upload it back. But if you need Macro's in Excel, or the squadron of flying bullet-points in PowerPoint, there's MS Office.
