slThe Caribbean island of Antigua is due to appear before the World Trade Organization (WTO) on January 28th seeking permission to run a site that sells music, movies and software - but ignores copyright law. Antigua went to the WTO after the US moved to stop American citizens using gambling services, including web-based betting shops and casinos, run from the Caribbean country. slFacebook Is Done Giving Its Precious Social Graph To Competitorshttp://techcrunch.com/2013/01/24/my-precious-social-graph/

.

- both cut off of FB API: Twitter’s new photo app Vine and messaging app Voxer from Find Friends
- as explanation, FB points to its Platform Policy that states “Competing social networks: (a) You may not use Facebook Platform to export user data into a competing social network without our permission.”
- this isn't new. in 2010 FB blocked Twitter from using its Find Friends feature. Google was pissed FB was importing Gmail contacts but not exporting friend lists. FB began offering Download Your Data, which included your Friend List, but only in plain text.
- josh constine at TC: Facebook is not an “open platform.” If companies are worried that Find Friends or other FB data access could be ripped away from them with little notice, it could cause a chilling effect on development on the FB platform. No one wants to build an app that relies on FB data if it could disappear. FB enforced its ban on exporting data for use in social networks. Russian search engine Yandex’s new social search mobile app Wonder got all of its API calls blocked just three hours after launch. That’s a lot of programming and product work down the drain.
- Twitter cut off Instagram’s access to Twitter’s own version of “Find Friends.” last summer

Microsoft plans to add to Surface line-up with more models, better distribution
http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-plans-to-add-to-surface-line-up-with-more-models-better-distribution-7000010328/

.

MS released its fiscal Q2 2013 financials
- Revenue rose 2.7% to $21.5 billion from $20.9 billion a year earlier
- Net income down 3.7% to $6.38 billion year-over-year

Microsoft's Windows division
- (which includes the Surface hardware) experienced a 24% revenue increase in the quarter to $5.88 billion
- MS said 60 million Windows 8 licenses sold (which MS has said before earlier this month)
- Peter Klein CFO says the increase in revenues were due to retail upgrades, Surface sales, and multi-year license agreements w/enterprises were up "double digits" (this could mean either Win8 or Win7)
- Surface numbers were not broken out, but Klein says that MS will "expand the product line-up" and is working with OEMs to deliver touch devices "at the right price point."
- The results sent Microsoft's shares down 2.1% in after-hours trading
- Entertainment and Devices Division (this is Xbox) down 11% in revenue year over year

Q: MS reported modest improvments in revenue, but a lower profit - is it too early to say Windows 8 isn't a hit? Will lower cost 8 devices drive adoption over time?

iaLenovo Says RIM Bid Among Options to Boost Mobile Unit http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-01-24/lenovo-says-rim-bid-among-options-to-boost-mobile-unit.html

.

Lenovo might be doing a deal with RIM
- This is no rumor. According to Lenovo CFO Wong Wai Ming, Lenovo is "looking at all opportunities -- RIM and many others."
- Wong said that Lenovo has spoken to RIM and its bankers about various combinations or strategic ventures
- RIM did not comment on the possible Lenovo deal
- If Lenovo were to purchase RIM, it would be subject to automatic review by the Canadian government to see if the transaction is of a "net benefit" to the country.

Q: Would a licensing arrangement or acquisition best suit Lenovo? Neither?

- AT&T has acquired some 700 MHz B band spectrum from Verizon in a $1.9B cash deal. the licenses will cover more than 42M people across 18 US states. ATT gets Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum licenses in five of those markets.
- subject to regulatory approval, but it believes the deal will close “in the second half of 2013.”
- VZ has said for a long time that if it was able to buy some of its rivals’ spectrum, it would discard the extra 700 MHz licenses it purchased during auctions in 2008. The spectrum doesn’t really work well with Verizon’s own networks
- AT&T's Q4 2012 earnings results yesterday: reporting overall quarterly revenues of $32.6B (an increase of 0.2% year over year), and earnings per share of $0.44, also record smartphone sales - carrier sold 10.2M smartphone devices and activated 8.6M iPhones.

Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe: Consumers right monetary compensation for internet service interruption

- Case: Man lost DSL for 2 mnths. Compensated for phone and fax outage but not Internet
- Under German law the loss of use of essential material items can be compensated.
- "The Internet plays a very important role today and affects the private life of an individual in very decisive ways. Therefore loss of use of the Internet is comparable to the loss of use of a car."
Q: Again we ask, is the Internet "essential"?

TNT crew;

I know that RIM is a frequent topic of discussion on the show, and in the trade rags - So it just occurred to me how Blackberry could get me to give up my iPhone 5.

Tethering.

If RIM could convince the carriers not to upcharge for tethering to a data plan that I am all ready paying for, I'd make the jump. I'd tether my iPad and live with the shame of using a Blackberry. Just sayin'.

They always made quality devices, and lead the way in enterprise integration for a generation. If they could just provide a browser that didn't suck ...

Curious to hear your thoughts on the idea - what would it take for you to give up the breath of available apps on your iPhone or Android device?
