.

- Julius Genachowski spoke at a US mayors meeting in DC, wants to see gigabit speed broadband services in all 50 states by 2015.
- called on municipal leaders and service providers to deploy gigabit speed broadband in at least one community in each of the 50 states in the next two to three years. Genachowski said that by participating in the "Gigabit City Challenge" communities would turn themselves into innovation hubs that would create valuable jobs for its citizens.
- this is his big thing- presented the National Broadband Plan to Congress in 2010, goal of getting 100Mbps broadband to 100M households by 2020. Now the chairman has upped the ante with his challenge to get speeds to 1 gigabit per second.
- FCC says Only 42 communities across 14 states already have ultra-high-speed broadband
"If we build it, innovation will come. The U.S. needs a critical mass of gigabit communities nationwide so that innovators can develop next-generation applications and services that will drive economic growth and global competitiveness."
- says that the fiber network deployed to 170,000 homes in Chattanooga helped lure big companies like Volkswagen and Amazon to the community, which has created more than 3,700 new jobs over the past three years in Chattanooga.

slDave Morin, CEO of Path: ‘If Facebook Is A Chevy, Then We’re A BMW’; ‘Family Friendly’ Network Pushes 6M Users, Launches Virtual Goodshttp://techcrunch.com/2013/01/21/dave-morin-ceo-of-path-says-if-facebook-is-a-chevy-then-were-a-bmw-as-family-friendly-network-pushes-6m-users-looks-to-launch-more-virtual-goods/

.

- spoke at DLD conference in Munich and compared facebook and path to a chevy vs. a bmw, says getting bought by FB isn't in the cards now
- moving more to quantified-self-type applications (nike fuelband, etc). “We spend a lot of time thinking of 150 people or less. So one of the most popular types of path content is sleeping: when people go to bed and wake up.”
- says likely Jawbone and Fitbit data will integrate too
- says china is top 5 market for path, thinks it has to do w family, private closed nature
- We provide premium filters, and we’re rolling out new categories of virtual goods in the first half this year. Premium subscriber services are also coming this year; we’re still working through it.” Morin says that the features of a premium service will be “things that won’t be interesting to a normal new user but intense users will want more options that a basic user won’t want.”
- new search engine on Path, traffic had gone up by 40%, and that is only with search being available in English. Since Path is available in 18 languages, there is plenty more engagement to be had with users. Next up will be Spanish, and then search will roll out to the other languages starting with Asia: Japanese, Indonesian, Korean and Chinese are next.

Google's 'link tax' negotiations break down as France talks tough over new laws
http://www.zdnet.com/googles-link-tax-negotiations-break-down-as-france-talks-tough-over-new-laws-7000010076/Sidebar

.

- France may tax the collection of personal data
- The idea came from a report entitled Taxation of the Digital Economy commissioned by President Francois Hollande (O-lan-d)
- The French think some internet companies like Google, Amazon and Facebook are avoiding taxes in France
- France's argument: you collect very valuable data here, but don't pay taxes. Users in our country are effectively working for your services w/o pay by providing personal info that lets Google sell advertising

Q: Would a tax like France is proposing make companies think twice about reaching France?
ex: Google generates an estimated €1.5 billion, or $2 billion in advertising revenue in France. Yet, like other American Internet companies, it pays almost no taxes in France.

How it would work: The report says tax rates would be based on the number of users an Internet firm tracked, to be verified by outside auditors.

Hey TNT crew!

I work for a non tech Fortune 500 company that also proudly boasts being a Fortune's 100 Top Companies to Work For. I think I can shed some light on this list and why some great companies don't appear on it. The number one reason why is something most people don't know, companies actually have to apply to be on it. They submit a campaign on why they deserve it and a small random sample of employees get sent a questionnaire.

So if Apple doesn't appear on this list it's more than likely due to the fact they didn't even apply to be on it.

Love the show!
