tmCheap iPhone? Rumor? Denial? Yes? No? Who knows. Reuters reported Thursday that the Shanghai Evening News had a quote from Apple's Phil Schiller saying Apple wasn't interested in a cheap low-profit iPhone. Friday morning however, Reuters pulled the story citing "substantial changes" in the Shanghai Evening News story. http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/01/11/reuters-cheaper-iphone-story-withdrawn-after-substantial-changes-to-china-report

slThe Wii U's first month sales numbers in the US are out, and even though the console brought in more money than the original Wii in the same time frame, only 460,000 units were sold compared to 475,000 original Wiis. Total Wii U's sold is at 890,000, 19% less than the original Wii in the same time period. The Wii U's higher price helps Nintendo though.. the company has brought in $300 million since the launch.http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/10/3863758/wii-outsells-wii-u-in-december

iaA disclaimer at the bottom of a CNET page says that CNET's parent company, CBS had CNET disqualify a Dish product from its "Best of CES" awards due to active litigation between CBS and Dish. The Dish Hopper with Sling DVR was a finalist in CNET's awards, but was disqualified. Dish's CEO said the company was "saddened by CNET's staff being denied its editorial independence." http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/10/3862558/cnet-parent-cbs-bans-coverage

tmSecurity Researchers Gaurang Pandya of UNisys Global Services noticed that the Xpress Browser on his Series 40 'Asha' phone was seemingly decrypting secure web connections, like banking, before passing them to his phone. Turns out Nokia agrees it does this, but only on its servers as it compresses the pages and Nokia promises it won't peek at your data. Opera Mini operates similarly, though discloses the fact better. Services like Amazon's Silk browser or the Skyfire browser do not decrypt secure connections, but those connections will be slower.http://gigaom.com/2013/01/10/nokia-yes-we-decrypt-your-https-data-but-dont-worry-about-it/

slThe world's second largest mobile operator, Vodafone, has apologised after customers in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa complained of lost emails on Blackberry devices. The company blames the problem on a router error and said services are being restored. RIM, which is no stranger to service outages over the last two years that have affected millions of customers, has said it supports Vodafone's efforts to resolve the issue.

Microsoft has told ArsTechnica that the Messenger service is not being retired on that date, but March 15th will be the start of the transition away from Messenger. The Windows Messenger desktop client will no longer be able to connect to the network starting on March 15th, however other clients should remain unaffected. http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/01/microsoft-messenger-service-not-going-anywhere-just-yet/

tmSamsung is the latest manufacturer to get cold feet around selling Windows RT devices. Samsung executive Mike Abary told CNET that Samsung's Qualcomm-powered RT tablet will not be sold in the US. Abary said the cost of educating consumers about Windows RT was too much compared to the anticipated sales of the device. Abary would not rule out bringing a Windows RT device to the US in future.http://ces.cnet.com/8301-34439_1-57563340/uh-oh-windows-rt-samsungs-got-second-thoughts/

- Samsung: easel TV is much better looking in real life, curved OLED, they wouldn't bring out their flexible display
- Sharp and its 8K TV, 4K monitor (32-inch and beautiful. $5500 coming out in March), bendable IGZO display
- Panasonic's 20-inch 4K tablet
- LG: Hecto Laser TV (short throw projector system, curved OLED), vacuum
- The lack of MS
- Intel felt like Intel (laptops again), got to see the Lenovo IdeaCentre Horizon there
- B&N display with paper books
- Still have a bunch of things I want to see

slThe YotaPhone Has An E-Ink Display On The Back And That’s Simply Awesomehttp://techcrunch.com/2013/01/10/the-yotaphone-has-an-e-ink-display-on-the-back-and-thats-simply-awesome/

.

- On the back of the YotaPhone is an e-ink display that can mirror anything displayed on the main screen. And because e-ink screens do not require battery life, these images are available even if the phone battery dies.
- Load your boarding pass on the back screen so it’s always handy. Put a to-do list on always-on screen. Store a map or directions on the screen. Or, best of all, the YotaPhone can load RSS feeds or notifications onto the e-ink screen, effectively turning the phone into a dual-sided productivity machine.
- just a prototype. In fact, as explained in the video, the unit shown in the demo was fresh off the production line three weeks ago. At 9mm thin, it’s not that much thicker than an iPhone 4S. The company expects the final production unit to be even thinner.

CNET took over Best of CES from G4TechTV in 2006.
- Dish Hopper with Sling was to be a finalist in the awards according to its Twitter feed on Wednesday
- Then CNET removed the Hopper from consideration because CBS is suing them
"The Dish Hopper with Sling was removed from consideration due to active litigation involving our parent company CBS Corp. We will no longer be reviewing products manufactured by companies with which we are in litigation with respect to such product."
- Dish CEO and President Joe Clayton: We are saddened that CNET’s staff is being denied its editorial independence because of CBS’ heavy-handed tactics. This action has nothing to do with the merits of our new product. Hopper with Sling is all about consumer choice and control over the TV experience. That CBS, which owns CNET.com, would censor that message is insulting to consumers."
- Home theater winner becomes Vizio 5.1 soundbar Best of Show is Razer Edge
Q: Should the CEA give the 'Best of' Awards to another company after this? What does this say about product journalism?

iaSamsung won't launch Windows RT tablets in the US, blames confusion and weak demandhttp://www.theverge.com/2013/1/10/3864240/samsung-no-windows-rt-tablets-us

.

- Mike Abary, the head of Samsung's PC and tablet business in the U.S., told CNET that the company will not be releasing its Windows RT device in the U.S.
- Abary cited modest demand and said that it would require a heavy investment to educate the customer on what Windows RT was.
- He also said that to keep prices low on Windows RT tablets, Samsung would have to make tradeoffs like including less memory and Samsung didn't want to do that
- Non-US markets: unclear what the company's plans are

Q: Does this mean trouble for Windows RT as a whole?

Dear TNT Crew,

I am disappointed with the former host of Tech History Today, Mr Tom Merritt, for failing to see yet another blatant attempt by Samsung to copy something from Apple. It should've been quite clear that when Samsung announced the Galaxy S II Plus, they were just copying Apple's naming convention but this time from an earlier product line.
It wouldn't be long before we will see the Galaxy S IIe and the Galaxy S IIc. Although I wouldn't hold my breath for the Galaxy IIGS and the IIc Plus.
Let the lawsuits begin. :)

Keep up the good work making tech news informative and entertaining.

Hi TNT crew, Marlon "TheGuyfromTrinidad" here, one of the things I loved when I got my first Kindle was starting it up and seeing Marlon's Kindle and in seconds getting some of the books I had ordered appear on it ready for me to read. Now think about it with this AutoRip deal that Amazon has, you buy your Amazon phone and after you boot it up and put in your Amazon user name and you immediately start streaming your music. The Amazon phone is coming :)
