tmT-Mobile USA CEO John Legere has said a lot of crazy things at CES, calling AT&T crap and warning Verizon's share everything plans will be bad for people who want porn not heir phones. However, in more reasonable comments to Reuters, Legere says T-Mobile hopes to bring the iPhone 5 to T-Mobile within 3-4 months and end subsidies for phones, thus lowering monthly plan costs in the same time frame.http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/01/09/us-ces-tmobileusa-idUSBRE90806420130109

slGoogle has filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission to terminate its efforts to stop Microsoft from using video-compression technology on the Xbox. Microsoft wants to license two standards-essential patents for H.264 that come from Motorola, which Google now owns. slThe Federal Trade Commission & the Justice Department together enforce U.S. antitrust law, and the former argues that infringement of "standard essential patents" should be punished with monetary damages rather than bans, except in specific cases. Standard essential patents have been crucial in the patent wars that companies have been tied up in since 2010. The usual expectation among corporations has been that standard essential patents will be inexpensively licensed to anyone, but it doesn't always play out that way. The ITC's view may carry weight with judges but is not binding.http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/01/08/us-patent-infringement-sales-ban-idUSBRE90715Z20130108

slTwitter puts real humans into its search algorithm...and profitshttp://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57562890-93/twitter-puts-real-humans-into-its-search-algorithm...and-profits/

.

blog posthttp://engineering.twitter.com/2013/01/improving-twitter-search-with-real-time.htmlSOURCE

.

- Twitter revealed what it called its "real-time human computation" system in a blog post written by Twitter data scientist Edward Chen and Alpa Jain, a senior software engineer in the company's "Revenue @ Twitter" group
- quote from post: How would you know that #bindersfullofwomen refers to politics, and not office accessories, or that people searching for "horses and bayonets" are interested in the Presidential debates? 2. Since these spikes in search queries are so short-lived, there's only a small window of opportunity to learn what they mean.
- humans follow fine, but automation can't decipher it. automated interpretation systems are involved at all here is because they're what Twitter relies on to serve up "relevant" ads -- promoted tweets, promoted feeds and what have you -- against these brief but often quite powerful search surges.
- this is about serving relevant ads during meme mushroom. Twitter's new API will send the query to Amazon's Mechanical Turk service, where humans will categorize it to help make it more relevant to readers. Then Twitter can populate its Discover section with live, topical streams of news.
- using Amazon's Mechanical Turk service. Mechanical Turk farms out data jobs requiring human interpretation to an army of workers across the globe. Amazon dubs it, cleverly enough, as "Artificial Artificial Intelligence."
- Twitter chose select number of folks on MT to "evaluate" trending search terms -- essentially by discussing them on forums and chatrooms and then telling Twitter which categories, images and videos the terms relate to.
- Of the ten most lucrative "human intelligence tasks" it listed at the time of writing, pay rates ranged from a high of $135.65 for transcribing and tagging five hours and 36 minutes of video to a low of $11 for writing a 300-word review article.
- jon mitchell at ReadWrite: I'm going to write only about ideas that rise from connections that are hard for computers to make. The story has to get its meaning from the complexities and eccentricities of people. If there's nothing more to the story than the news itself, people are going to get it from Twitter.

-Could also uncover botnet owners, malware authors
-Analysis requires minimum 5,000 words, translated into English. Leetspeak prevented translation
- Researchers also developed Anonymouth which identifies function words which could make them identifiable.

iaSony PlayStation Vita Sales Lower Than Expected, Still No Price Cut Cominghttp://www.gamenguide.com/articles/4751/20130109/sony-playstation-vita-sales-no-price-cut-coming-value-bundles.htm

.

- Sony CEO Kaz Hirai told reporters that PS Vita sales figures are "on the low end of what we expected."
- Hirai explained that "Long term is what is important."
- it could take 5-10 years to know if a product has been successful comparing it to the PS3
- According to stats from August 2012, Sony sold 2.2 million Vitas
- The W-Fi model costs $250, the 3G version is $300

Q: Is there anything Sony could do the existing hardware that would make the Vita worth the money?

Hey guys,

I think you are under selling my personal favorite feature of roku, sure it's nice to have Netflix and hulu but I like roku for being able to see Internet tv channels like giant bomb, twit and twitch.tv on a television rather than computer. Other than boxee I don't know of any solution as simple and easy as roku.

Great show! Keep up the good work!

Good Morning Team,

Listening to Tuesdays show I could not help but think about the possibilities of two users having independent full screen viewing capabilities on 4k tvs.

As a gamer, I have issues with playing a two person game on one tv resulting in a poor user experience as each player traditionally has half the screen, a horrible aspect ratio, and jumbled audio.

Utilizing both the dual screen viewing technology and audio would allow two players to view the entire screen and have their own audio resulting in a much better user experience. As a side note it would also prevent screen cheating in a competitive game.

As always keep up the great work and Evernote! Drink!

Curt
