tmSony shook things up at CES yesterday by announcing new 55 and 65-inch 4K TVs as well as a 56-inch OLED 4K TV prototype. Wait, that wasn't the shakeup part. Was it the 4K distribution system that features Sony Pictures content and other stuff so you actually have something to watch in 4K? No… RIGHT. Aphone! NOBODY announces phones at CES anymore, but Sony isn't nobody. Or something. The Xperia Z is a 5-inch quad-core Android phone with NFC and a 13-mpxl camera… and it's water resistant!http://ces.cnet.com/8301-34451_1-57562620/sony-ces-press-conference-heavy-on-4k-tvs-oled-plus-an-actual-phone/

slIntel's talking some big talk at CES. The company says by the end of 2013, $599, touch-enabled Ultrabook laptops will be on the market, and that devices will be required to support touch input. But that's not all, Intel is also promising functional “all day battery life.” If this is all true, we're looking at a lower-priced PC market with prices matching tablets, and with touch capabilities, the line between ultrabook and tablet is ever less clear. http://thenextweb.com/insider/2013/01/07/intel-by-the-end-of-2013-well-see-599-touch-enabled-ultrabooks/

iaThis year's CES is the first not keynoted by Microsoft in a long time. So to ease the transition, Steve Ballmer made a surprise appearance at Qualcomm's Keynote to show off Windows Phone 8 and RT. Of course, the two operating systems run on Qualcomm chips. As for Qualcomm news, CEO Paul Jacobs announced the Snapdragon 800 series processors, which he says will be "faster than many laptops." http://www.pcworld.com/article/2024207/ballmer-big-bird-and-desmond-tutu-enliven-qualcomms-big-night-at-ces.html

slAT&T's got some bragging rights! Its unit sales topped the 10 million mark for the first time in its history during the fourth quarter of 2012. It set a 9.4 million record in 2011. the company pins the good numbers on the “best quarterly sales of Android and Apple smartphones,” including the launch of Apple’s iPhone 5. Back in September, AT&T announced that the newest iPhone was officially its fastest selling Apple device ever, even before Apple announced the same thing. http://thenextweb.com/apple/2013/01/08/att-sold-a-record-10m-smartphones-in-q4-2012-helped-by-best-ever-sales-of-android-and-apple-devices/

tmPeople used to say "Only Nixon could go to China" but Apple CEO Tim Cook says eft Nixon, I'll go to China as often as I want. 10 months after his heralded first visit to the People's Republic, Cook returned to meet with Miao Wei, China's head of industry and information technology. John Paczkowski of ATD wondered if Cook might have time to squeeze in a visit to China Mobile and get them to carry the iPhone.http://allthingsd.com/20130108/why-is-tim-cook-in-china-again/

slOn stage at the CES 2013 keynote, Panasonic showed off an OLED TV, manufactured using 3D printing technology. The specs: 56-inches, half-an-inch thick, and weighs a lot less than other LED sets. And in theory, 3D printing tech should help bring down prices on OLED TVs. Not surprisingly, Panasonic CEO Kauhiro Tsuga didn’t share any details on price or availability.http://techcrunch.com/2013/01/08/panasonic-debuts-worlds-first-4k-printed-oled-tv-just-half-an-inch-thick/

Big samsung press event (quad-core processor in tvs, evernote on refrigerators, cameras), these are the standouts
Fancy TV:
- Samsung's teased TV turned out to be the Samsung UN85S9 85-inch 4K TV which is housed in a frame that looks like an easel. The TV can be tilted up and down. Gizmodo noted that the frame is not removable
- The frame has a 120-watt 2.2 speaker system
- new Smart Hub software, S-Recommendation, and voice control, and the set is powered by a 1.35Ghz quad-core A15 processor.
- Will be launched in March, no pricing

New SmartTV interface coming to newer TVs this year
- Looks a bit like the Xbox 360

- Video discovery: Can pull content from your cable box as well as selections from Netflix, Vudu, Blockbuster, CinemaNow, and Samsung's Media Hub.
- allows users to search all of the different video sources through one single app. When the service launches this spring, it also will be available for certain Samsung mobile devices

- Recommendations: samsung is watching what you're watching, so it can give you recs based on that
- The Verge says the interface is a bit sluggish

slThe new guard: Look at who is buying technology companies nowhttp://www.google.com/url?q=http://gigaom.com/2013/01/07/the-new-guard-look-at-who-is-buying-technology-companies-now/&sa=D&usg=ALhdy28smyjmuJyxIhZkvCxGEdjy7hviEw

- Om Malik on how acquisitions have changed: Traditionally, the buyers for startups have been the big tech companies themselves — Facebook, Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and sometimes Amazon and Apple. Sure Cisco would pony up some big dollars or HP would get drunk and blow its cash on something, but the big buyers for the web-and-oriented startups have usually been big web & mobile giants.
- 2 examples: Avis bought ZipCar for about $500 million and today Athena Health announced that it was spending about $293 million on a doctor-focused app/service called Epocrates.
- non-tech has to compete with tech. Starbuck's has a leg up with square. Retailer like Macy's still has something Amazon doesn't, but gap is closing. Then they need tech and fast
Thanks to Twitter and Facebook, the internet is the new weapon of mass complaining. Price checks conducted via mobile apps are going to become a default behavior, especially as a whole generation of internet users (natives) grows up to become the next big consumer group.

slManufacturers Need You to Buy an Ultra-High-Def 4K TV. Save Your Moneyhttp://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/01/the-4k-push-ces-2013/

.

- The industry started pushing 4K last year, when the uber-sharp, uber-expensive TVs were, like OLEDs, the big news at CES. Well, we’re back again this year, being told again that 4K — a.k.a. UltraHD — will be so awesome that no one will believe their eyes.
- 3dhdtv isn't a big success, 4k is the new thing manufacturers need to sell. But too expensive, no content.
- Sony, Visio, sharp, all showing off 4k TVs, no pricing. LG was the one company to announce a price. Its 84-inch OLED 4K TV will retail for $12,000! 84 inches.
- 60-inch hdtv in 1080p is not going to look that different with normal use
-
Sony currently has a device it loans to customers that have purchased its 4K TV to watch Sony Pictures movies. At CES the company announced that it would have a 4K solution in the summer that included a device that would connect to a Sony Pictures Entertainment distribution service. The service will play, you guessed it, Sony Pictures Entertainment movies.

- Amazon, Google, Apple, Facebook not there, never have been, social networks allow them to market direct with their own events.

Hi TNT Crew,
My main problem with the new 'Project Shield' from Nvidia is that it smacks a little of the Sony 'Xperia Play' Android handset - that promised Android + Playstation Games with a dedicated controller form-factor and that concept bombed. Do you know *anyone* who bought one because I don't; even my friends who are hardcore Playstation lovers (and Android users) didn't bother as they had a PSP already. I struggling to see who this thing is aimed at.

Hey TNT Crew:

Your talk about smart teevees yesterday missed an important aspect: sound.

I love my Panasonic Viera and I was excited to try out the smart tv apps. To my disappointment, there is not a good way to do audio out.

The crappy teevee speakers don't give me the audio fidelity to hear the unintended fart on Downton Abby that my home theater system does.

Until the sound problem is fixed, I'm keeping my HTPC hooked up.

Best,

Mike the Diplomat
There's a way to send audio out of your TV via the HDMI port. It's called HDMI audio return
