slAfter a 2 year investigation, regulators in the US are forcing Google to make changes to the way it presents some search results and runs its search advertising. But Google was found not guilty of deliberatly burying competitors in its search results. The FTC did find fault with Google's Motorola Mobility (MMI) phone subsidiary which used essential patents to try to block competition and extract big payments. We'll talk more about what all this means a little later in the show.http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2013/jan/03/google-cleared-search-bias-investigation

iaRemember that rumored Apple/Waze deal? MG Siegler over at TechCrunch says that's not happening. He cites "multiple sources close to the situation" and makes the point that companies talk all the time. So there's a chance Apple and Waze held talks, but his multiple sources say no deal is in the works. http://techcrunch.com/2013/01/03/apple-not-buying-waze/

slSpotify has stopped the sale of music through its streaming service in regions where it was previously available. Free and Premium subscribers are met with the notice: "We're no longer supporting new download purchases on Spotify.", then a pop-up window sends you to a FAQ page on the company's support site. Older downloaded music will still appear in your library and play through the service, although once it expires, you probably won't be able to play any of it. Spotify claims this is going to simplify the service and make room for new features. http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/48981/spotify-suspends-music-download-service

Microsoft vents over FTC Google antitrust ruling

http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-vents-over-ftc-google-antitrust-ruling-7000009378/

.

Big story from yesterday
- Google and the FTC have settled that 2 year investigation
- On Search Bias: FTC found Google DID NOT favor its own properties over competitors in search results and the reason Google's products were pushed higher was to improve user experience, not remove competition

- FTC had issue with Google's Motorola division saying Moto said it would license patents on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms, but Motorola changed its terms. Google has to license the patents on FRAND terms.
- Google has agreed with the FTC that it will seek to resolve standard-essential patent disputes through a neutral third party before seeking injunctions.

- Officially, Google's changes are legally binding (meaning FCC enforcement)

Google also says its made a couple of "voluntary changes"
- Sites can remove content from specialized search results pages
- Advertisers will be able to mix and copy ad campaign data w/in 3rd party services that use Google's AdWords API
- MS VP & Deputy General Counsel Dave Heiner sounded off about the FTC investigation calling it a "missed opportunity" and said the FTC didn't adhere to its own practices in looking to industry input on proposed relief

- Heiner also took issue with Google's spin on the story
Google's statement: "Google's services are good for users and good for competition"

Q: What impact will this settlement have on Google and its users?

iaSony in talks for virtual MSO servicehttp://www.variety.com/article/VR1118064150/

.

- Variety reports Sony is "in active negotiations with at least two major content companies about licensing their channels for a package that could roll out in the U.S. later this year, according to sources."
- Variety says Sony's talks are as advanced as Intel's
- The service: it would be a package of linear channels like what cable and satelitte traditionally provide, only delivered via broadband connection
- It would not allow for a la cart channel subs
- This would likely mean Sony would have to put up a bunch of money to content companies just to start up this venture

Q: This is just rumored at this point, but would a move like this make sense for Sony?

slThe E-Reader Revolution: Over Just as It Has Begun?http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB10001424127887323874204578219834160573010-lMyQjAxMTAzMDAwMzEwNDMyWj.html

.

- yesterday we talked about barnes & noble's weak 2012.
- Market-researcher IDC estimates 2012 global e-reader shipments at 19.9M units, down 28% from 27.7M units in 2011. IDC's 2012 TABLET forecast is 122.3M units.
- IHS iSuppli numbers a bit different but trend is the same - ereaders peaked in 2011. By 2015, it expects unit sales of dedicated e-readers to be just 7.8 million.
- a few things going on - ereaders meant to be like a book. read the words, it works. no hurry to upgrade. ereaders have improved, smaller, faster page turning, nightlights, but still just for reading
- Pew Research Center poll found that 23% of Americans said they had read e-books in 2012, compared with 16% in 2011.
- tablets do it all, ereaders do one thing well. why not go with it all?
- similar to iphone being my music device. it's everything

Meet Google's Original Creepy Android Mascots
- A Google+ post by Dan Morrill shows off the original proposed Android mascots (and they look very different from the current one).
- Morrill was cleaning up a NAS server and found the early mascot. They were drawn up as "eye candy" he made for a presentation slideshow.
- The multi-color goofy looking androids were nicknamed "Dandroids"
- The "Dandroid" was replaced by the "bugdroid" designed by Irina Blok
- Additionally Android versions were going to be named after robots like R2-D2, but that got dumped due trademark issues. Hence the dessert naming.

Hey guys,

I've just listened to episode 661 and wanted to comment about the rumors of Apple buying Waze.

As an Israeli who follows the Israeli startups scene, I can assure you that Waze will be bought very soon, either by Apple or any other big company. That's the Israeli startups nature. Every time those companies are being sold, the local media questions them why they were so eager to sell, and every time they have the same answer: "It's impossible to create mega company in Israel, and the only way to continue growing, is to be sold". That's was the same case with ICQ (Accuired by AOL) , the USB flash drive (Sandisk), etc.

Actually, that's the dream of young Israelis who open those companies. They just want to be sold. the sooner, the better.

Love your show!

Hey TNTers

I think you guys like everyone else are taking this Samsung portrait tv teaser way too literally.

Let's consider it a different way. What if this is simply a tease for a new 4K tv in traditional landscape format.
Over the years as the image quality of TVs has improved I have frequently heard Leo describe the effect as similar to looking through a window at the real world.

Most windows have a similar upright orientation to the image in the teaser. Perhaps this is just implying that looking at this new TV will be looking out the window. I've worked with a lot PR and social media types in recent years that are looking for any kind of unique angle to get people talking about their products and I can definitely see them coming up with something like this even if it is a stretch for most of us.

keep rockin' in 2013!
