slRumors are swirling that Apple is acquiring social mapping service Waze. A source tells Techcrunch that negotiations are advanced, but Waze wants $750M and Apple is only prepared to go up to $400M plus $100m in incentives. Waze has been on a roll since the Apple Maps fiasco helped it gain more market share, and last year rolled out Waze Ads, a location-guided ad platform for local businesses and brands that want to market to drivers nearby. Might be worth it, Apple. http://techcrunch.com/2013/01/02/is-apple-plotting-a-route-to-a-waze-acquisition-rumours-on-the-road-point-to-yes/

iaSprint will launch a new service called "Sprint As You Go" where the company will offer phones without contracts ranging from $50 to $250 in price. $70 per month will get you unlimited talk, text, and web. There's an even cheaper $50 per month option if you go with a prepaid feature phone. "Sprint As You Go" launches on January 25th. http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/01/02/sprint-will-begin-pay-as-you-go-service-on-january-25th-but-standard-sprint-phones-arent-invited-to-the-party/

slIf tablet web traffic doesn't lie, then Apple might be in some trouble. Chitika Insights surveyed a sample of hundreds of millions of impressions from its advertising network in December, and iPad declined, by 7.14%. Now, is this inevitable because the market share had to start evening out at some point, or just a fluke month when many iPad owners might have been traveling or otherwise not using their iPads as much? More to come when we get some January numbers.http://thenextweb.com/gadgets/2013/01/02/chitika-says-kindle-fire-web-share-jumped-to-7-5-and-ipad-fell-7-14-over-holidays-in-north-america/

iaSamsung's already announcing products you'll see at next week's Consumer Electronics Show. The company unveiled two Windows 8-powered machines in its Series 7 line. The Chronos is a 15.6-inch laptop with a multi-touch screen standard. The Ultra is a thinner notebook with a 13.3-inch display, with an optional touchscreen and an optional LTE modem. Samsung still hasn't spilled the beans on that TV it teased the other day, though. http://thenextweb.com/gadgets/2013/01/03/samsung-outs-new-series-7-15-touchscreen-laptop-and-13-ultrabook/

slMicrosoft is accusing Google of blocking a full-featured YouTube app for Windows Phone, and one of its lawyers has written a blog post about it. This isn't new, though, Microsoft has been complaining to regulators since 2010. And unlike YouTube clients for Android and iPhone, YouTube for Windows Phone is just a wrapped mobile Web version, because it doesn’t have access to full APIs. Microsoft is now claiming that senior Google executives recently told engineers at YouTube not to make it better. http://allthingsd.com/20130102/microsoft-google-is-still-blocking-us-from-building-youtube-for-windows-phone/

iaThe WSJ reports that Microsoft has acquired home automation startup id8 Group R2 Studios. Back in December, reports circulated that Google, Apple, and Microsoft were interested in the company. The Journal says that Microsoft plans on using R2 Studios technology to bolster its Xbox division. Control your whole house with your Xbox? slXbox blogger and spokesman Major Nelson has fired up a few Xbox fans. Yesterday he launched a countdown to the 2013 E3 games expo with the cryptic words "and it's on." Microsoft is expected to announce a new version of its Xbox 360, though Microsoft has refused to formally comment. Maybe Major Nelson's just majorly excited about hanging out in downtown LA for a few days? I like the Xbox rumor better. http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/gamesblog/2013/jan/03/xbox-720-countdown-begins

The phone will remain available in the Google Play Store as well. http://www.tmonews.com/2013/01/all-t-mobile-stores-to-carry-the-nexus-4-beginning-this-month/

slThe Virginia Supreme Court has ruled that a woman who posted a negative Yelp review of a local contractor should not be forced to edit her comments on the basis of defamation. This overturns a preliminary injunction in the lawsuit, which would have required editing of the review in question. Jane Perez had hired Christopher Dietz of Dietz Development, a Washington, DC contractor, to do painting, re-finishing, and various other construction-related tasks worth $53,000 at her home in 2011. http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/01/judge-cant-order-yelp-user-to-edit-negative-review/

iaSamsung will start selling Tizen-powered smartphones this year. The Linux-based Tizen operating system is a collaboration between Samsung, Intel, and other industry players. Samsung said the device will be "competitive" and be part of an expanding lineup. Details like a specific release dates or the number of initial models were not mentioned. http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57561773-94/samsung-confirms-tizen-based-handsets-for-2013/

slIs Apple Plotting A Route To A Waze Acquisition? Rumours On The Road Point To Yeshttp://techcrunch.com/2013/01/02/is-apple-plotting-a-route-to-a-waze-acquisition-rumours-on-the-road-point-to-yes/

.

- Waze is already a data partner for Apple’s Maps app. boosted its market share to 10% of U.S. iPhone users from 7%, according to a study from mobile data compression company Onavo after apple maps fail.
- TC source says that negotiations are advanced, but Waze wants $750M and Apple is willing to do $400M plus $100m in incentives. Waze had less than $1M in revenues last year (primarily from ads).
- last month rumor of FSQ acquisition for local search data.
- $500M+ to buy Foursquare (which has raised $71 million is known to be raising another round), and gain, what? The location of restaurants, bars and airports? Given Waze has raised $67 million, Apple could acquire far better mapping data and a real driving app.
- Last year Waze introduced a new Foursquare-like product called Waze Ads, a location-guided ad platform for local business owners and big brands that want to attract the attention of nearby drivers.
- apple isn't commenting. waze isn't commenting.

Microsoft resurrects YouTube-Windows Phone compatibility complaint
http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-resurrects-youtube-windows-phone-compatibility-complaint-7000009297/

.

- Microsoft's mad at Google
- MS wrote up a blog post saying that Google is preventing Microsoft from "offering consumers a fully featured YouTUbe app for the Windows Phone."
- from the MS post "just last month we learned from YouTube that senior executives at Google told them not to enable a first-class YouTube experience on Windows Phones."
- The YouTube app for WP is basically a wrapper for the mobile YT site
- Google issued a comment saying WP users can access all the features of YT through its website

Q: Is Google's move anticompetitive or just business?
- MS had the same argument in 2011 back when it filed a formal complaint with the EC citing concerns Google violated European competition law
- In the 2011 complaint, MS said that Google put in measures to restrict competing search engines from properly accessing it for search results

- TABLET-PALOOZA!
- Barnes & Noble's Nook segment -devices, digital content and accessories — had revenues of $311M, big drop from last year’s $448M. While digital content sales — ebooks, newsstand, and apps — increased by 13.1% (compared to an increase of 113 percent last year), the decline was driven by lower device sales. B&N says that Nook sales declined “due to lower unit volume and average selling prices.” Barnes & Noble launched the Nook in the U.K. this fall, no word on performance.
- “Nook device sales got off to a good start over the Black Friday period, but then fell short of expectations for the balance of holiday,” CEO William Lynch said in a statement. “We are examining the root cause of the December shortfall in sales, and will adjust our strategies accordingly going forward.”
- Retail sales — consisting of physical stores and BN.com — had revenues of $1.2B, down 10.9% from last year.
- data from Chitika Insights, which says it surveyed a sample of hundreds of millions of impressions from its advertising network between December 1 and December 27, 2012.
- ipad share fell 7.14%. only loser besides bb playbook which dropped .02%.
- ipad still at 78.9%. This appears to imply that tons of new non-iPad tablets suddenly started browsing the Web in December to significantly offset the Apple iPad.
- Kindle Fire got a jump of 3.03 points to 7.51%, biggest gain
- iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III were the biggest winners, posting gains of 1.1 percent and 1.0 percent in smartphone usage share, respectively
- Chitika: “despite the gains by competitors, we expect that the iPad’s share of tablet traffic will return to the 80% range, albeit lower than pre-holiday levels, as users return from vacation and browse with their new devices less frequently.”

- The OS will support ARM and x86 processors, is built around the existing Android kernel and drivers, but doesn't use a Java Virtual Machine

- However, phones running Ubuntu aren't scheduled until 2014
- Vlad Savov of the The Verge called the roadmap "suicidal"
- Sascha Segan of PCMag said the OS is nothing without hardware

Q: What does a one year wait mean for this OS?

Hi, Guys

[Re: the Samsung TV mentioned yesterday] Why a "tall" TV? How about a second screen with channel display, menus, and possibly icons to click with something similar to a Wii-mote? A 32" screen with simple on-screen display capabilities could be added to a large-screen set for less than $200. Get the closed-caption display off the actor's feet.

I was thinking that one of the winners of eye tracking computers would be advertisers. They would be able to tell companies how many people actually looked at their ad and for how long instead of how many pages they appeared on. There are many ads that I never click on but I may remember seeing one and go directly to their site later.

Of course, this would lead to more annoying ads that jump to grab your eye's attention... <sigh>

Keep up the good work!
