iaBloomberg reports that Sprint Nextel has made an offer to acquire all of Clearwire for $2.1 billion. Sprint already owns more than 50% of Clearwire. The deal would end a four-year joint venture between the two companies. Clearwire wasn't a profitable company, but it does own a bunch of spectrum that Sprint could use to build out its network. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-12-13/sprint-seeks-to-buy-rest-of-clearwire-for-about-2-1-billion.html

tmRemember last October when US Immigration and Customs Enforcement annoucned it would switch more than 17,000 employees from BlackBerrys to iPhones. remember how everybody started measuring RIM for a coffin? Well Fighting Thorston Heins and friends aren'd dead yet! They just got ICE to backtrack a tiny bit, and agree to test BlackBerry 10 smartphones and enterprise service early next year, meaning Apple better not fill those iPhone orders quite yet.http://techcrunch.com/2012/12/13/719126-ice-to-test-bb10/

iaIt's over. Dell is now out of the smartphone business globally. The company left the U.S. market this year, but continued to sell phones in China. Jeff Clarke, the head of Dell's consumer business, said that the company would not re-enter the smartphone game and that the company could not "find a way to build a business on Android." Clarke said that he's optimistic on the long term prospects of the PC business. http://www.forbes.com/sites/jeanbaptiste/2012/12/12/dell-quits-smartphone-business-globally-android/

tmAmazon brought its instant video app to the iPad in August but oddly not to the iPhone or iPod Touch... until today. Subscribers to Amazon Prime willl get access to all the streaming titles in Amazon's library and all the people's... of the US... will be ab;le to buy and rent stuff. On the tiny screens. If that's what you want. You can only airplay sound though.http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/13/amazon-instant-video-now-available-ipod-touch-iphone/

iaIt looks like Dropbox is going to have some sweet music sharing features in the future because Dropbox just picked up the three-man team behind Audiogalaxy. Audiogalaxy runs a service that allows you to access your home music library via the web and from apps. The blog post announcing the deal makes it seem as though the deal is an acqui-hire and not necessarily Dropbox picking up Audiogalaxy as a whole. http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57558898-93/dropbox-acquires-music-streaming-service-audiogalaxy/?part=rss&subj=news&tag=title

iaToday, the NYC Taxi and Limo commission will vote on whether yellow cab drivers can use smartphone apps like Uber to find fares. Current TLC rules do not allow payment through third party systems like Uber. According to TLC commissioner David Yassky, the payment systems would need some adjustments like being integrated with the meter to prevent overcharging. The vote is expected to pass. http://transportationnation.org/2012/12/13/nyc-likely-to-approve-taxi-e-hail-apps-on-temporary-basis/

.

tmAt 1:30 AM, delegates at the World Conference on International Telecommunications apparently agreed that the ITU should take a role in the Internet. The US, Europe and others opposed the resolution. ITU secretary-general Hamadoun Touré previously said no majority votes would be taken to change the 1988 telecom treaty at issue. Summit chairman Mohamed Nasser al Ghanim claimed it was not a vote but the "feel of the room." Any proposed treaty would have to be ratified by national governments. The US Congress passed a resolution last week stating the Internet should remain free from government control.http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-57558887-38/u.n-summit-rejects-u.s-europe-hands-off-the-internet-plea/

Dell bullish on future of PC, rules out smartphone playhttp://www.computerworlduk.com/news/infrastructure/3416261/dell-bullish-on-future-of-pc-rules-out-smartphone-play/

.

- Dell hadn't sold mobile devices in the US this year. Phones were available in China
- Dell says "So far we couldn’t find a way to build a business on Android,” added Clarke. But Dell continues to look at Android saying, “It doesn’t mean we’re not looking at Android. You should come and see what’s in our labs.”
- Clarke says he's optimistic "at the long term prospects of the PC businesses"
- Dell says "We're going to provide smartphone solutions, we're going to be the preferred BYOD provider of solutions in the marketplace”

Q: Wise decision by Dell or ignoring the future?

tmSprint Seeks to Buy Rest of Clearwire in $2.1 Billion Dealhttp://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-12-13/sprint-seeks-to-buy-rest-of-clearwire-for-about-2-1-billion.html

.

Here’s why Sprint offered $2.1B to buy the rest of Clearwirehttp://gigaom.com/mobile/heres-why-sprint-offered-2-1b-to-buy-the-rest-of-clearwire/

.

Bloomberg reports Softbank-backed SprintNextel offered $2.1 billion to take over Clearwire ($2.90 a share)
- Clearwire 4 year old joint venture co-founded by Craig McCaw
- Late October, Sprint bought shares from Craig O. McCaw’s Eagle River Holdings making it majority owner
- Sprint would provide $800 million of interim financing to keep Clearwire afloat - must be approved by Softbank, Clearwire board and the FCC
Q: This is actually a consolidation move since Clear's plan was to provide a platform for other services to use. Can/Should Sprint take on that mantle? Or is this just spectrum grab, plain and simple?

iaDropbox acquires music streaming service Audiogalaxyhttp://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57558898-93/dropbox-acquires-music-streaming-service-audiogalaxy/?part=rss&subj=news&tag=title

.

Hello, Dropbox
http://www.audiogalaxy.com/blog/2012/12/hello-dropbox/

.

- Dropbox acquired Audiogalaxy
- Audiogalaxy allowed people to access their music from anywhere (You'd install some software on your PC then access it via the web or app). Audiogalaxy also had music discovery via "mixes" which were customizable by users.
- If you go to the Audiogalaxy site, you'll see Audioglaxy is no longer accepting new users with a link to an explanation saying its team is joining Dropbox.
- The post says the audiogalaxy "team is joining dropbox" and that "as a part of the transition, audiogalaxy will no longer accept new signups."
- Suggests an acqui-hire: the team behind AudioGalaxy worked on FolderShare which MS acquired (turned it into Live Sync).

Q: If Dropbox is building music services with the Audiogalaxy team, what would you want to see out of it?

tmU.S. Federal Agency That Switched From BlackBerrys To iPhones Has A Rethink: Plans To Test BB10 Devices Next Yearhttp://techcrunch.com/2012/12/13/719126-ice-to-test-bb10/

U.S. Immigration: iOS Still In The Mix, But BlackBerry 10 Pilot A Gohttp://www.crn.com/news/mobility/240144369/u-s-immigration-ios-still-in-the-mix-but-blackberry-10-pilot-a-go.htm

.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) will begin a pilot program on RIM’s new line of BlackBerry 10 smartphones and BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 (BES 10) early next year
- RIM said the agency will be “among the first government organizations to pilot the new BlackBerry 10 solution”.
- ICE had announced in October it would switch 17,600 employees to iPhones
- In November the BlackBerry maker announced that BB10 had been granted FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) 140-2 certification — which certifies the products for use by government agencies and regulated industries in the U.S. and Canada.
Q: Is RIM clawing its way back?
Barbara Gonzalez, press secretary for ICE, said the agency's BlackBerry 10 pilot program does not necessarily mean the company is reversing its October decision -- t ICE is looking to develop new mobile apps for law enforcement and is evaluating how BlackBerry 10 could provide a platform for those apps.

- He says at work he uses Samsung products, at home that he uses a Mac, an iPhone and an iPad (as well as the Galaxy)

- Of Apple he sees that consumers like Apple's ecosystem like iCloud (Sohn says he likes that his family in Korea can always see his contacts and photos). He described Apple's ecosystem as "sticky"

Hey guys,

On Freedom pops new home wifi, I think it's a great deal. I just pre ordered on for my mom in law. She only really checks email so 1 gig a month is all she needs. This will give her free home Internet. Even if she goes higher it means $10 per month. That's super cheap for her.

And as far as where it's available, she's in Sacramento, hardly a limited area.

Love the show.

In your discussion of Apple's policy regarding Microsoft and other developers incorporating purchases and subscriptions into their app, you, appropriately mentioned the seemingly inflexible nature of Apple's position. However, I don't think you did justice to the counter position and the consumer-friendly angle.

I, for one, am MORE likely to make purchases in an app if it is tied to my Apple account because it means I don't have to re-enter my credit card information on a third party site that I have not fully vetted. Also, it makes management of my purchases easier since I only have to review my Apple Store account and, if any problems arise, only have to deal with Apple customer service, which historically has been rated far better than other retailers. It is the same reason why I prefer to shop via Amazon and why it is a benefit for resellers to sell their goods at Amazon.com. I assume that Amazon also has a significant revenue sharing agreement with resellers whose goods are purchased on Amazon's website by consumers using their Amazon accounts.

Just thought that perhaps the pressure should be less on Apple to change it's policy and more pressure placed on developers to allow the in-app purchasing using Apple accounts since it offers a tangible user benefit and may actually increase sales for the developer; it's the power of the "one-click" impulse purchase.
