iaMicrosoft building more Surfaces, selling at Staples, Best Buy http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2012/12/microsoft-building-more-surfaces-adding-non-microsoft-retailers/

.

Microsoft confirms Surfaces coming to non-Microsoft retail outlets
http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-confirms-surfaces-coming-to-non-microsoft-retail-outlets-7000008643/

.

- First rumored last week, Microsoft is expanding distribution of its Surface tablets
- The U.S. and Australia will be first to get more retail stores carrying the Surface RT.
- MS's press release doesn't name any stores and when asked about that detail by Mary Jo Foley, MS did not comment
- Staples confirmed its carrying the RT starting today and Best Buy has the RT on its site as "coming soon"

“Our plan has been to expand the retail presence for Surface after the first of the year. Based on interest from retailers, we are giving them the option to carry Surface with Windows RT even earlier,” said Steve Schueler, corporate vice president, Microsoft Retail Sales and Marketing.

Q: MS pushed up its expansion of Surface RT distribution - is this going to ruffle OEMs feathers?
- Also in the press release: MS says several holiday stores will transition into permanent MS retail outlets.
- the company has also announced that it has ordered its manufacturing partners to increase production and build more units, contradicting reports last month that it had scaled back orders.

G’day Tom, Sarah, Iyaz & Jason,

It seems to be “Australian info month” on TNT at the moment. Whilst we have our issues here down-under, things are not as dire as you’ve been led to believe. Comparing our prices with yours – where Verizon charges a ludicrous $199 charge for an iPhone 5 16gb and then $100 a month for 2gb with unlimited call/text, we can get an iPhone 5 16gb for $0 and $99 a month for 3gb with unlimited call/text. If you bring your own phone, you can get unlimited call/text and 2gb of data for $38 on the same network through a reseller. At&t’s rates are so laughable it’s not even worth comparing.

So we are not so backwards or behind in Australia. Don’t feel too sorry for us.

And just remember, we invented WiFi and we also invented over-the-horizon radar which can detect your stealth bombers. There’s no fooling a good Aussie.

Regards,
Pete

P.S. No I don’t have a pet kangaroo, no I don’t throw shrimp on a barbie and no, that’s not a knife..This is a knife..

I'm little behind on my TNT episodes, but I just wanted to comment on your discussion about allowing devices to stay on during airplane take off and landing. I'm an engineer at an EMC compliance lab and there are already standards that exist for devices that operate on and in airplanes. The most common are the DO-160 standards(think of FCC standards for the skies) See http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/DO-160

For example, we have a client that makes electronic portable assisted breathing devices. In order for them to operate during take off and landing the FAA requires them to meet some of the RF emission DO-160 specs. In the future I don't see why the FAA couldn't include certain requirements for mobile devices and if they pass they could get a special label or code for identification.

And if they are worried about people leaving their radios on, part of the FAA requirements could require future devices to include an extra feature that could receive a radio shutoff notification from the airplane within a certain proximity if the captain turns it on and the phone/tablet would respond by turning off any radios (this would have to be secure to avoid the crew from hak5 having fun with this)

in my quasi-expert opinion, I don't think there is a huge risk during take off and landing if the radios are being shutoff since the planes are designed and tested to be immune to outside interference, but I think due diligence never hurts when it comes to safety.

Take care

Jerry
