slCord-cutters, you know, like me, — get our TV from the internet rather than traditional cable services — but content like sports, and networks like HBO, still are hard to get access to. Bloomberg reports that's because cable companies, Time Warner Cable being one of them, are offering incentives to media companies and content providers to keep their shows off of internet services. Unnamed sources said those incentives were either monetary or were threats of dropping programming from the media company.http://www.theverge.com/2013/6/12/4423102/time-warner-cable-paying-producers-to-keep-tv-off-the-web

Time Warner Cable Defends Contracts That Hamper Internet Video Rivals
http://variety.com/2013/digital/news/time-warner-cable-absurd-to-suggest-exclusive-tv-deals-are-anticompetitive-1200496204/

.

- Bloomberg and Variety report that Time Warner Cable and other pay-TV operators are ""offering incentives to media companies that agree to withhold content from Web-based entertainment services such as those pursued by Intel Corp. (INTC) and Apple Inc. (AAPL), people with knowledge of the matter said."
- What kind of incentive would stop the media companies from giving its content to Intel? Money! higher payments!
- Variety says that DirecTV, Dish, and Cablevision are also in on this with TWC
- TWC Ceo Glenn Britt said that his company "may well have (programming contracts) that have that prohibition" barring TV networks from bringing their content online.
- "He added that some deals afford TWC the rights to nationwide Internet-video distribution if programmers license networks to an online video provider."
- Charter Communications CFO Chris Winfry said that is in ""everybody's mutual interest that we are protecting the ecosystem…"
- TWC spokesperson Maureen Huff said “Exclusivities and windows are extremely common in the entertainment industry… It’s absurd to suggest that, in today’s highly competitive video marketplace, obtaining some level of exclusivity is anticompetitive.”
- Bloomberg points out that satellite co's had trouble getting content until legislation was passed in 1992 to get access to content

Q: Do exclusive deals to keep content offline seem anticompetitive? Should there be legislation to change the game?

Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Don Mattrick (MS President Interactive Entertainment) at USC talk future of the entertainment medium
- Lucas: Movies will become like Broadway, high-end sophisticated, expensive, few theaters, event-driven
- Rest will be Internet TV, similar to cable and broadcast, but wider variety, more experimentation, niche
- Lucas: "But out of that chaos will come some really amazing things. And right now there's amazing opportunities for young people coming into the industry to say, ‘Hey, I think I'm going to do this and there's nobody to stop me.' It's all because the gatekeepers have been killed."
Q: What do you think of Lucas's vision of the future of movies?

Hi everyone,

Yesterday Lamar was concerned about the 'agenda behind' the work that scientists have done many many times that has shown that driving while talking on the phone or texting is very distracting. Well, perhaps I can put this to rest a little. A student in our psychology department here at Algoma University (go Thunderbirds) ran a study for her honours thesis on this.

Courtney Parr (working with my colleague Paul Dupuis) found that people were most distracted when using a phone or when using a bluetooth headset talking to a confederate compared to the confederate being beside them. There was no difference between the hands free and the (hand full?) phone condition. The subjects were using a driving simulator (aka my son's xbox driving wheel and Forza 4). The conversations were exactly the same, there was a script that the confederate followed. Courtney's agenda was clear, she wanted to fulfil the requirements of an honours BA in psychology…..

Several Twitter clients seemed to have gone dark this week. Destroy Twitter, TweetDeck (at least the AIR client), even the Digsby integration all seems to be dead. Did something at Twitter change recently (I recall a story a few weeks/months ago about some changes to the API that would potentially hurt 3rd party apps), but it feels like there's *no* option left on the Windows desktop now other than going to the website (a terrible user experience that I've always tried to avoid at all costs, and definitely not conducive to staying on top of things in the way that having a client always open at the edge of my screen was).

Any chance this can get covered on the show? As they used to say over on that other network, "Love. The. Show". Keep up the great work

Hey guys.

Callum Orr from sunny Scotland here. Just thought i would pitch in some thoughts about the statements made about nintendo not wanting to license out their games. I think iyaz was entirely correct that it is just a bit of a backwards move to think that not moving with the current trend of gaming into mobile will save them. However it is exactly what has probably kept them afloat for the past few years.

This is where i think they could be HTC's knight in metroid armour. they could either purchase or strike a deal with perhaps one handheld manufacturer, htc springs to mind as they constantly produce incredible hardware but dont seem to get any real benefits from it. and they could license out their ips to that single manufacturer? this way htc has some real muscle behind it, hopefully giving consumers a reason to pick up their amazing devices, and nintendo moves with the times a little and can augment their dwindling options.

just a little thought.

cheers!

Tonx is a small company made up of a tight knit team of experts who believe that everyone deserves a great cup of coffee, and everyone can brew a great cup right in their kitchen – if they have the right beans [and it starts with quality, fresh-roasted beans]. Tonx sources their beans directly from the growers, roasts them, and ships within 24hrs of roasting for the freshest beans you can find.

Talking Points (Please use different aspects of Tonx’s value prop):

Really good coffee (Tonx’s twitter feed is a testament that this is extraordinary coffee).

Shipped within 24 hrs of roasting.

Home-brewed coffee can be just as good as your favorite café. It's not as hard as baristas make it out to be - but it all starts with fresh beans, which you can't get if you buy bags of beans from grocery stores. Pre-ground coffee is even worse. Great coffee actually has very little to do with fancy gadgets and expensive gizmos.

Convenient – Tonx is a bi-weekly subscription which sends the best beans on earth directly to your door, for the price of a few café visits

If you’re hitting a café most mornings, this is a much better (and more economical) way to get great coffee.

Tonx offers plenty of help on best brewing methods and equipment.

Tonx sources directly from the growers. Because of their extensive relationships – they can follow the tilt of the earth and select the best beans when they are at their peak.

Tonx coffee also makes a fantastic gift. If you’re looking for something for that hard-to-buy-for person – why not get them a great cup of coffee every morning – so much more meaningful than a gift card.

[Tonx cares about the experience of its customers and is available to help with any brewing questions and ready to offer tips and advice.

Offer

If you fancy yourself a coffee connoisseur or just love coffee, you need to try Tonx Coffee. These guys are fanatical about delivering the best beans in the world. They source directly from the growers, roast it, and ship within 24hrs so it’s as fresh as can be. Every two weeks, you can get a new batch of incredible beans, roasted to perfection.
