iaJimmy Wales spoke at Vodafone's Mobile for Good summit today and showed off his own personal phone. It was a 3G handset made by Huawei that he picked up from Kenya that now costs about $50. Wales said that smartphone adoption in Africa is happening faster than he realized. That adoption rate is putting the region on the Wikimedia Foundation's radar - it had previously been focused on emerging markets like India, but it was Wales's budget Android phone that he says woke his mind up to take another look at Africa.http://techcrunch.com/2012/12/10/50-android-smartphones-are-disrupting-africa-much-faster-than-you-think-says-wikipedias-jimmy-wales/

iaYahoo Mail revamp aims for speed, simplicityhttp://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57558436-93/yahoo-mail-revamp-aims-for-speed-simplicity/

.

Reimagining email to be…emailhttp://www.ymailblog.com/blog/2012/12/reimagining-email-to-be-email/

.

- Yahoo announced its new Yahoo Mail on its corporate blog (credited to Marissa Mayer).
- "Starting today, the new Yahoo! Mail is fast, easy and available anywhere you go."
- Apps available now: Windows 8, iPhone/iPod touch (no iPad yet) and Android
- Web version is rolling out over the next few days
- The post says the new version is designed with speed in mind
- The mobile apps are designed to be consistent (iOS app is snappy, swiping a message gives you options, pull down to refresh. Android app doesn't respond the same with swipes, does have pull to refresh

Q: It's the first major redesign from Mayer's Yahoo, what do we think of the simultaneous roll out of apps? of Mayer's penning of the blog post?
- The new iOS app features push notifications, a constantly-updating list of messages (so there's no need to load when you reach the end of a list), and the ability to easily add photos from the camera roll or shoot new ones through the app to include as attachments.

- Yahoo's had an Android app for some times, but it has now been re-written from the ground up — the company says it maximizes performance while reducing battery drain by 20 to 40 percent.

tmGoogle CEO Larry Page talks Apple, Android monetization and an eventual Motorola Nexus device http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/11/google-ceo-larry-page-talks-apple-android-monetization-and-an-e/

.

Fortune's Miguel Helft interviewed Larry Page for a cover story
- "The Internet was made in universities and it was designed to interoperate."
- "I think it would be nice if everybody would get along better and the users didn't suffer as a result of other people's activities."
- "We want to do things that will motivate the most amazing people in the world to want to work on them."
- " Our job is to think of the thing you haven't thought of yet that you really need. "
- "If you look at a product, and you say the day it launched, "It's not doing what I think it should do." We say, "Well, yeah. It just launched today."
- " I think for us our strength comes from working with everybody, but we also need to make sure we're serving our end users with a really great experience and that we provide that detailed information to people. Sometimes those things will be complicated."
- "what I'm trying to do is to get a technology company that continues to scale its impact and aspirations in its everyday. We're at a certain scale now, but I don't see any particular reason why we shouldn't be much bigger, more impactful than we are now. "
" Part of what I'm trying to do is take Google as a case study and really scale our ambition such that we are able to cause more positive change in the world and more technological change. I have a deep feeling that we are not even close to where we should be."
Sum: Page come soff in these excerpts as someone who doesn't want to get distracted by what 'the competition' is doing, and wants to superserve the user, even with things the user doesn't know they want. But that doesn't mean everything will be perfect. Iteration and long-term goals seem key.
Q: All BS for the press, or true vision?

iaFacebook Will Nix Voting, Integrate Instagram Data Despite Vote Ending With 88% Of 668K Votes Opposedhttp://techcrunch.com/2012/12/10/facebook-vote-ends/

.

- Voting time is over at Facebook
- 588,803 votes (88 percent) opposed to the changes, and 79,697 of the total 668,500 in support.
- However, since less than 30% of FB users voted, FB is getting rid of its voting structure and Instagram data WILL be integrated (you'd need 300M people voting)
- This is the biggest turn out in FB voting. Previous high was Apr 2009 when 665k voted

- FB users still have a voice: users can submit questions to Chief Privacy Officer Erin Egan
- FB can intermingle data w/ its affiliates: any Instagram user that also has a Facebook account could have their personal Facebook data used to target them with ads on Instagram.

iaMicrosoft balks at Apple’s 30% fee, leaving SkyDrive and apps that integrate with it in the lurch on iOShttp://thenextweb.com/insider/2012/12/11/as-skydrive-balks-at-the-30-fee-third-party-developers-feel-the-heat-as-apple-blocks-apps-integrating-the-microsoft-service/?fromcat=all

.

- TheNextWeb reports that MS and Apple are butting heads over SkyDrive
- This centers around Apple wanting to take 30% of in-app revenues
- MS rolled out the ability for SkyDrive users to purchase more storage while it already had a SkyDrive iOS app
- The app has not been updated since the roll out b/c MS doesn't pay Apple the 30% cut
- So: MS won't update the SkyDrive app b/c it is trying to negotiate w/Apple. The company offered to remove all subscription options from its application, leaving it a non-revenue generating experience on iOS. The offer was rebuffed.
- This also means that 3rd party applications that use SkyDrive are being freezed out.
- the "CloudMusic for SkyDrive" app which uses the LiveConnect SDK was rejected by Apple review team saying that “the log in interface must be native and not a link or a web view.”

Q: if all of this is true, should Apple bend to MS or vice versa?

Hi TNT crew,

I was listening to episode 645 where you guys were talking about the images on the contact lenses. I have a few ideas about possible uses for this.

One use is displaying crisscross lines so that less light gets into the eye, thereby providing an instant shade. No more need for any sun glasses. You can easily turn on or off the shade by showing or not showing images. Or better yet, think of active shutter 3D glasses!

The other use is to show really bright images on the contact, pointing outward, thereby providing an instant flashlight so you can see in front of you in the dark. Of course this would require too much electricity, and probably burn a hole in your eyes. So much for good ideas.

Love the show,
George

Hello from Omaha Ne. I wanted to add to your discussion today about the state of fiber being rolled out.

In Omaha century link is in process of doing a fiber to home project. They are adding to an existing fiber project that USWest put fiber to the ped about 15 years ago. It is said that when turned on will have low end speeds of 40 mbps and topping out over 100 mbps.

I found it interesting when it was said that no one could make this work when it was going on in my back yard. It is my hope that Googles fiber project has made all the tel cos rethink their stances on high speed Internet as in something faster than 7 to 27 mbps.

Thank you so much for having such a wonderful daily show to entertained and keep me up to date!

Love the show,
Joe
