tmThe Washington Post and The Guardian reported yesterday that nine tech companies, Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, YouTube, Skype, AOL and Apple, gave the NSA direct access to their data through a project called PRISM. All the companies except AOL and PalTalk have denied knowledge of any such program. The Washington Post later backtracked saying that the slides leaked to them by a career intelligence officer may have been imprecise. Anothe classified document the Post saw referenced equipment installed at company-controlled locations rather than direct access to servers. US Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper claimed both articles had numerous inaccuracies and categorically denied that PRISM spies on US citizens. The Wall Street Journal further reported that AT&T, Sprint, and other ISPs collect telephony metadata similar to the report about Verizon yesterday. Finally the Guardian reported that the UK's Government Communications Headquarters has reviews data collected through PRISM since 2010.http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/06/07/us-apple-nsa-idUSBRE9551EU20130607

iaMicrosoft published several pieces on Xbox Wire answering some questions about the Xbox One. The Xbox One will be able to "game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console." What about used games? Microsoft says that it "does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games" and that the Xbox One is designed so "game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers." MS even addressed the privacy concerns about the Xbox Kinect - Microsoft says while you can turn on your Xbox One with a voice command, that listening mode can be turned off. http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/06/xbox-one-used-games-always-online/

PRISM data collection program after Protect America Act approved by Congress in 2007 that allowed warrantless interception of foreign-to-foreign communications
- Leaked by "career intelligence officer" that had "firsthand experience with these systems, and horror at their capabilities,"
- WaPo and Guardian claimed NSA has direct access to data from 9 Internet companies: Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, YouTube, Skype, AOL and Apple.
- Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, YouTube, Skype and Apple have all refuted their involvement in the program, and denied knowledge of it.
- WaPo backed down on claims that tech companies "participate knowingly"
- Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper claims both articles have numerous inaccuracies. Clapper categorically denied that PRISM spies on US citizens
- "By order of the FISC, the Government is prohibited from indiscriminately sifting through the telephony metadata acquired under the program. "
- WSJ: phone call metadata is also being collected from AT&T and Sprint, along with data from other ISPs and even credit card purchase info.
WaPo backdown: "It is possible that the conflict between the PRISM slides and the company spokesmen is the result of imprecision on the part of the NSA author. In another classified report obtained by The Post, the arrangement is described as allowing "collection managers [to send] content tasking instructions directly to equipment installed at company-controlled locations," rather than directly to company servers."

Bluestacks' Android-powered Gamepop TV console to run iOS gameshttp://www.theverge.com/2013/6/7/4403888/bluestacks-gamepop-ios-android-games-tv

.

- Bluestacks announced that its Android-powered Gamepop game console will run iOS games
- Bluestacks says it can run iOS games using something called "Looking Glass" which works at an API Level. The CEO of Bluestacks Rosen Sharma says that "its not quite virutalization or emulation as you've known it."
- The company recreated the API that iOS provides WITHOUT using any Apple code.
- This would allow an iOS game developer to submit their game to the Gamepop catalog
- Sharma says that Looking Glass does all the work, so the barrier for devs is minimal
- "Literally all developers have to do is change their payments backend so it works with our subscription model and that's it. They don't have to do anything else to their games."
- Bluestacks is currently giving away the Gamepop console with a one year subscription until the end of June. After this promotion is over, the console & controller costs $129.
- $7/month gets you access to Gamepop's game catalog

Q: iOS games on Android? What? Should BlueStacks be bringing Looking Glass to all of Android?

- Microsoft will handle the cloud end of game transfers but publishers control whether retail outlets can sell used games or not.
- After installing, can access games from cloud on any Xbox One
- Up to ten family members can log in and play from shared library on any Xbox One
- Must contact server once every 24 hours to play games, every hour on friend's consoles
- No renting or loaning of games at launch

slGoogle Wallet Is Leaking Moneyhttp://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-06-06/google-wallet-is-leaking-money

.

- - Forrester Research estimates that U.S. mobile payments will top $90 billion in 2017, up from $12.8 billion last year, but successful companies like PayPal and Square make money by charging retailers fees in excess of what they owe to credit-card companies.
- Google has hundreds of developers working on Wallet and spent about $300M buying digital payment startups. But Wallet has been downloaded fewer than 10M times in the two years since its launch, according to Play
- Google doesn't renerate fee revenue from the transactions like banks, PayPal, Square do. Google collects consumer data and target ads to them. Google pays such high fees to the credit-card companies it works with, though, that it loses money on every transaction, says Osama Bedier, who stepped down as head of Wallet on May 20 and will shortly leave the company.
- only Sprint supports wallet. Verizon, AT&T & T-Mobile block Wallet on their phones and have teamed up to develop their own software, called Isis. MCX, a consortium of retailers including Wal-Mart and Target, is also working on a similar app.
- Larry Page in March gave advertising head Sridhar Ramaswamy control over Wallet. Google may scrap a Wallet credit card it’s developing, according to 3 people familiar with the project. It’s already changed its plans to build a Wallet-compatible Android tablet that can read credit cards for brick-and-mortar retailers, intended to rival Square’s card-reading tool, according to 4 people familiar with that project.

.

- AllThingsD reports that Yahoo is in serious discussions to buy Xobni
- Xobni makes address book apps for iOS and Android as well as plugins for Gmail and Outlook
- "The two companies have been talking for a while, but a deal appears more imminent now..."
- Xobni CEO Jeff Bonforte previously was a Yahoo exec in charge of communications products and social search from 2005 to 2008
- I tested out Xobni's "Smartr" app for iOS. It's a contact manager that puts together your contacts from Twitter, Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo, LinkedIn, Facebook and more. It uses three tabs to show you contact info on someone, your history with that person (like how often you contact them, calendar events involving that person), and common people between the two of you
- It's pretty slick and is it's all in one approach is similar to the People Hub on WP
- Xobni says it analyzes the data from those various networks and builds complete profiles for you

Q: Does Xobni's technology sound like something Yahoo would integrate into Yahoo Mail or do you think it would keep the company running independently?
