Hello TNT crew,

In show 767 you continued a discussion about a possible Lenovo/Blackberry business merger, specifically mentioning US government customers as a reason. I am a private contractor working exclusively for a government agency and it seems to me that something was missed by the discussion: the Federal Government’s recent ban on computer hardware purchases from Chinese firms.

The latest budget resolution (HR 933 Sec. 156(a)) bars select agencies (but not others) from purchasing any IT system “produced, manufactured or assembled by one or more entities that are owned, directed or subsidized by the People’s Republic of China.” because of cyber-espionage fears.

As best any of the higher-ups in our agency can determine this means all computer hardware currently in existence. So we’ve had a complete freeze on all IT purchases, period, for the last month.

In addition to this being a terrible setback for the important work that we and other departments are doing, I don’t know how the current hysteria will affect a potential Lenovo / Blackberry merger. Presumably if they are thinking about one, they may have some way around the current Chinese-hacker boogeyman problem the US is facing.

I’m a big fan of TNT and Security Now. Keep up the great work at Twit.

-Alex

What does it mean if Intel's new chip consumes four point seven times less power than their old chip? If I jogged a mile yesterday and today I jogged four times less than yesterday, doesn't that mean that I jogged -3 miles? (1 - 4(1) == -3).

Brian
A: The relevant slide is here:

At the same performance level the Silvermont arch. draws 4.7 times less power than the previous Saltwell arch.

I guess the equivalent jogging metaphor would be you run 5 K and need to eat 4.7 energy bars to make it through the run, but then you upgrade to silvermont legs and only need to eat one energy bar to make the run.

There's certainly room to argue whether this power savings is as significant as Intel claims or if it will even be realised in practice, but the math isn't the issue.
