tmMicrosoft posted official details about Windows 8.1 today. The Start "tip" will now look like the Windows logo and will always be visible on the desktop. In other words Microsoft just can't bring itself to say it brought the Start button back. Users will also get the option to boot straight to the desktop, integration of SkyDrive even when offline, and resizable panes when running two apps from the tiled interface. Oh and resizable tiles. A preview of Windows 8.1 will arrive at BUILD in San Francisco June 26. http://blogs.windows.com/windows/b/bloggingwindows/archive/2013/05/30/continuing-the-windows-8-vision-with-windows-8-1.aspx

Windows 8.1: Microsoft brings back the Start button with options to appease desktop users

.

No Start button for Windows 8.1http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-57586786-75/no-start-button-for-windows-8.1/

.

- Windows 8.1 is official
- The Start button: yes, there is a start button on the desktop. No, it doesn't bring you back to the old Start menu. Clicking the flag brings you to the Start screen
- Option to boot straight into the traditional desktop mode
- Simple change: Desktop wallpaper and Start screen wallpaper can be the same image
- Lock Screen changes: you can accept Skype and voice calls and take photos w/o needing to unlock the device (no backdoor to the photo library here)
- Start Screen changes: different sized tiles. Downloaded apps don't go directly on the screen, the live in the app menu. Motion backgrounds
- Search will give you global search (checking the web, apps, files, Skydrive) results powered by bing
- Snap lets you put more apps onscreen at once depending on the resolution of your screen. Demo showed up to 4 apps up. Snap can support 50/50, 60/40 and the old 80/20 splits
- More Skydrive integration, updated PC Settings w/o having to go to the Control Panel
- unclear exactly when Microsoft will ship Windows 8.1, but the company plans to release a preview version on June 26th at its Build developer conference.

Q: Will this update silence Windows 8 naysayers?
More on the start button:
- The Start button on the desktop replaces that sliver that some called the "start tip."
- The button will not appear on Windows 8 apps unless you hover over the bottom left corner, then it will pop up.
- It will be enabled by default
- You can also configure the Start button to go straight to a new All Apps section, which can be sorted by different views to make it more like a traditional Start menu with one click access.

we must comment on the opposing headlines trend as part of this story, heh heh. - tm

I don't see Sony exiting the electronics market quickly. If they're really smart, they'll manage the risk by selling off the movie and insurance businesses to separate corporate entities, and let the electronics business make or break itself alone. The Sony brand has long represented top quality, but also one of the most expensive vendors in the consumer electronics marketplace.

Apple suffers from the same kind of problem, because there are lots of people who refuse to pay top dollar for any product, even if it is arguably the best. They'd much rather pay 50% off top dollar, and feel like they got a good deal. Like Apple, Sony kept to the high end of the market, which has now collapsed due to the economy, so it's obvious they need to reestablish their brand superiority in the average price range of the market for awhile, then upsell people on features and novelty later on.
