iaNokia is not afraid of head-to-head competition. The company just released a video dubbed "The Hurricane" using the Nokia Lumia 928 and compares its video quality directly against the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3. The video footage was shot on a roller coaster at night. The Lumia's 8.7-megapixel PureView camera looked to produce generally smoother video and handled low light situations better than the other guys. http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57583410-94/nokia-takes-on-iphone-5-galaxy-s3-in-latest-lumia-video/

slA Chrome extension called downloadify that let Spotify users permanently download any song currently available from the streaming music service, has been blocked by Spotify. It took advantage of nonexistent encryption in Spotify's web player, which the company launched in beta back in November. By simply installing the extension — freely available in the Chrome Web Store — and starting to play a song, users will download a full, DRM-free MP3 file of the track. Downloadify was quickly removed from Chrome's Web Store, but is still available via a repository at GitHub.http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/7/4309936/spotify-nightmare-chrome-extension-lets-users-download-any-song

tmU.S. Is Weighing Wide Overhaul of Wiretap Lawshttp://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/08/us/politics/obama-may-back-fbi-plan-to-wiretap-web-users.html

Tim Clemente told CNN that, in national security investigations, the bureau can access records of a previously-made telephone call. "All of that stuff is being captured as we speak whether we know it or like it or not,"http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/1305/01/ebo.01.html

.

FBI wants more power to wiretap, including backdoors into email, IM etc.
- New proposal levies fines against companies that don't comply (even if they say they can't) $25K/day
- 30-day period to consult on tech
- Would apply to VoIP too, NO LONGER requires encryption keys to be available
- Surveillance would still require a court order
- BUT ACLU obtained internal Justice docs - U.S. Attorney for Manhattan instructions, subpoena "all records from an ISP." Subpoena does not require probable cause
-IRS has publicly abandoned that position.
- Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals' 2010 ruling in U.S. v. Warshak, warrantless access to e-mail violates the Fourth Amendment.
Q: How much cooperation should tech companies be forced to give?

Hey TNT crew,

I'm writing in about your discussion of the power generating tiles for San Francisco's Temple Night Club in episode 747.

Although these smaller local renewable systems might seem useful in our gradual transition to renewable energy, the growing number of these fit-and-forget resources (feeding back into the grid without overall system visibility or control) is actually a huge nuance for the rest of the energy sector.

On the supply-side these systems don't participate on energy exchanges and therefore don't provide generation schedules. Large central generation systems with reserve power will hence need to correct the resulting increase in supply and demand imbalances. This makes the overall electricity supply less efficient and creates undesired effects in other grid areas. Meanwhile local distribution companies are confronted with line overloading at certain times due to limited capacity and unwanted tripping of short circuit protectors due to reversing power flows.

New approaches such as Virtual Power Plants are currently being developed that can manage a portfolio of distributed energy resources (generation, storage, loads) for owners that are unable themselves, while providing proper system integration and revenue maximization. Only with these kinds of serious innovations is replacing substantial amounts traditional generation with local renewables actually possible.

Kind Regards,
Tom the Power Systems Engineer
