iaWhen Eric Schmidt talks, people listen. This time, Google's chairman was talking to the Wall Street Journal and said it's "extremely curious that Apple has chosen to sue Google's partners and not Google itself." Apple has been involved in patent litigation with a number of Android handset makers like Samsung, HTC and Google's Motorola division. Schmidt also said he expected the patent litigation to "continue for a while." Other tidbits from the interview - Schmidt says that new technology will take care of spectrum shortages, he said Google worries about Siri and that Microsoft hasn't "emerged as a trendsetter" with its new Windows operating systems. http://www.theverge.com/2012/12/5/3730438/eric-schmidt-apple-google-lawsuit

tmAs the 12-day ITU fun fest regarding updating the 1988 treaty on world telecom cooperation continues, the US and Canada made a valiant attempt to speed things up and get quick approval for a measure that would limit ITU rules to telecom operators and not Internet companies like Yahoo and Twitter. The ITU which moves at Ent-like speed put off discussion of the proposal until Friday.http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/12/04/us-un-internet-treaty-idUSBRE8B316I20121204

slThe California Public Utilities Commission, which oversees transportation regulation, has issued a 15-page proposal examining the legality of companies like Uber, Lyft, and Sidecar, after fining all 3 last month for being in violation of state law. slTelstra phone-theft bill shock shows roaming still brokenhttp://www.zdnet.com/au/telstra-phone-theft-bill-shock-shows-roaming-still-broken-7000008331/

.

- Australian Rayden Crawley was on vacation in Barcelona, got phone stolen.carrier is Telstra. got a $27,853 phone bill. had taken Telstra 3 days to shut off SIM after theft report. Telstra said with a police report the charges would be wiped. 2 weeks later, CC was charged.
- zdnet broke down the charges- while roaming- local calls are charged at AU$2.00 per minute, and calls to Australia are AU$5.12 per minute. So even if the person was on a voice call for the entire time between when the phone went missing and when it was blocked by Telstra, it still wouldn't add up to that amount.
- data is expensive: In Spain, Telstra charges 1.5 cents per kilobyte, or $15.36 per megabyte. This means that, even if the full bill was only due to data, all the owner would need to download is around 1.8GB of data in order to reach the full AU$27,853.
- even tho this is a theft case, isn't the system broken? what if i downloaded a hi-quality movie online? i'm out 28k?

US fails to shield Google, Facebook from ITU processhttp://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/12/us-fails-to-shield-google-facebook-from-itu-process/

.

Reuters reports: US and Canada with support from Europe proposed limiting ITU rules to apply only to telecoms and not Internet-based companies (like Facebook)
- "We want to make sure (the rewritten ITU treaty) stays focused squarely on the telecom sector," said U.S. Ambassador Terry Kramer. "We thought we should deal with that up-front."
- Committee of reps from 6 regional bodies did not give quick approval as hoped. Instead put off until Friday
- What happens next: ITU Secretary-General Hamadoun Touré told Reuters last week that any major changes to the 1988 treaty would be adopted only with "consensus" approaching unanimity
One proposal of particular concern to the ITU's critics would standardize deep packet inspection for government surveillance purposes. --- no privacy safeguards and worries could lead to hardware requirement

TechStars alum Karma launches its $79 social hotspot: Share your Wi-Fi, earn free datahttp://thenextweb.com/gadgets/2012/12/04/techstars-alum-karma-launches-79-social-hotspots-share-your-connection-get-free-data/

.

Karma (official site)
https://yourkarma.com/

.

- Karma's launched its $79 hotspot data-only service on Tuesday
- comes with 1GB of free bandwidth and is available for purchase on YourKarma.com.
- Additional bandwidth costs $14 per gigabyte and never expires
- It's similar to FreedomPop (buy a hotspot, get 500MB for free monthly, 10MB added for referrals)
- The Wi-Fi connections on all of Karma’s hotspots are open.
- When new people use that hotspot, they get 100MB for free once (can use it in one sitting or from a diff Karma hotspot), the owner of the hotspot also gets 100MB
- In theory, a hotspot owner could get unlimited data by having people use their hotspot (FreedomPop lets users get up to 1GB for free by adding other FreedoPop subs)

- Karma tracks data use by tying you back to a FB account
Technical things:
- runs on Clear's WiMax network at speeds up to 6Mbps (FreedomPop also uses Clear, but will switch to Sprint LTE next year)
- coverage in 80 cities
- claimed 8 hour battery life
- can handle up to 8 connections at once

Q: Will a hook to facebook help Karma gain ground? Would you use a hotspot like this (as a guest or owner)?

Self-driving cars that communicate over wireless sort of scares me. I'm a freshman at the University of Tulsa and in our computer science "Freshman Orientation" class, one of the presentations included that they already have been able to use the wireless systems already in the car to gain control of the vehicle. It seems to me like it would only become easier to cause a problem if the malicious user only had to fake data which would be sent to the target rather than breaking in to the system and over-riding the controls.

The CS dept. owns an old mechanic's garage just off campus where they work on hacking these cars' systems in order to make them more secure.
