iaWired published a story spotlighting the terms of service that come along with Google Glass. It turns out that Google specifically says that you may not resell, loan or transfer your device to another person and if you do, they reserve the right to brick your device. Google hasn't commented on the matter when contacted by Wired. http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/04/google-glass-resales/

slGoogle has named Provo, Utah as the third market where it will deliver its 1 Gbps fiber service. But Unlike its network plans in Austin and Kansas City it is taking a different approach to the Provo, Utah deployment by purchasing the city's existing iProvo fiber network. If the city council approves the deal, Google would upgrade the existing network to 1 Gbps technology and expand the network so all homes in the city can get access to the service. Google would offer a free 5 Mbps service to the 115,000 residents on the existing Provo network who pay a $30 activation fee.http://www.fiercetelecom.com/story/google-fiber-buy-iprovo-network-upgrade-utah-city-1-gbps/2013-04-17

iaNokia's released its Q1 financials and it's a mix bag. For its Lumia unit, sales were 5.6M devices, which is up from 4.4M sold in Q4. The bad news is that basic phone sales were down, which led to Q1 net sales declining 20% compared to last year at the same time. Nokia's stock price took a hit on the news. Enough about the news - let's talk about a Nokia rumor. A Financial Times source says that Nokia will refresh its Lumia line and it may include a "phablet," which would compete with the likes of the Galaxy Note. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/04/18/nokia-idUSL5N0D529E20130418

slSamsung is considering purchasing mobile memory chips from rival SK Hynix for future products, including its new flagship Galaxy S smartphone to be launched this month, J.K. Shin, head of Samsung's mobile business, said yesterday. A deal would be great for SK Hynix, which currently relies on Apple as its big customer for its DRAM chips. iaGoogle Is Forbidding Users From Reselling, Loaning Glass Eyewear http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/04/google-glass-resales/

.

- Google will not allow anyone from selling or loaning out Google Glass
- The ToS for Glass say Google "reserves the right to deactive the device" and neither would be entitled to any refund.
- The company knows if the eyewear was transferred because each device is registered under the buyer’s Google account.
- Story popped up b/c a person who was trying to sell his Google Glass device and found out that some people in his Glass Explorers Google+ Group were acting upset
- Right now Google Glass has limited availability
- Wired checked in with Google, but Google hasn't made any comment if the ToS will change once Glass becomes widely available.

Q: Is this kind of policy okay for a limited version of Glass? Do you think Google will bother to enforce such a thing after the device becomes widely available?

slGoogle Fiber to buy iProvo network, upgrade Utah city to 1 Gbpshttp://www.fiercetelecom.com/story/google-fiber-buy-iprovo-network-upgrade-utah-city-1-gbps/2013-04-17

.

- Provo, Utah is goog's 3rd market for 1 Gbps fiber to the home service - is purchasing the city's existing iProvo fiber network.
- City council members are scheduled to vote on the deal next Tuesday, April 23. Google says will upgrade the existing network to 1 Gbps technology and complete network construction so all homes have access. will also offer a free 5 Mbps service to the 115,000 residents on the existing Provo network who pay a $30 activation fee.
- Kevin Lo, general manager, Google Fiber, said in a blog post that they "intend to begin the network upgrades as soon as the closing conditions are satisfied and the deal is closed."where it would compete against
- if all goes well will leapfrog austin to #2 spot after KCity with service up and running by late 2013. announced Austin, Texas this month but won't begin offering services until 2014.
- in provo will compete w Comcast (current 105 Mbps speeds) and incumbent telco CenturyLink (1.5 Mbps to 40 Mbps depending on how far away a customer resides from the nearest remote terminal or central office).
-
- make sense to purchase another service provider, rather than build from scratch?

SubReddit "findbostonbombers" started by British poker player who goes by Oops777
- Images on 4Chan also going viral
- "People were already speculating on suspicious people in the crowds. The worst case scenario is we waste our time, but the best is that we find something the FBI missed — which is why all suspicious information that isn't ruled out is sent to the FBI."
- BuzzFeed's John Herman points out: "On Reddit, or 4chan, there is no distinction between verification and reporting. It's all public."
- Reddit has responsibly solved crimes before: 'Reddit Bureau of Investigation' -- “Witch-hunts and the posting of personal information are forbidden. The motto not your personal army applies.”
- “Does anyone remember Richard Jewell?” top post on findbostonbombers
1. Is this a case of vigilantiism and it should be discouraged. Is it irresponsible no matter how well-nitentioned?
2. Is it a case of crowdsourcing in action and there's a real possibility that more data can be crunched and a real significant find made if kept within the bounds?

On the April 17th show, Iyaz talked about Yahoo! and what Marissa Mayer was doing to improve the company's position in the marketplace. The focus seems to have been improvements in very specific areas and, I believe, his point was that Yahoo! needs to tie their properties together in some way.

Coincidentally (or maybe not...), just yesterday I noticed on my Flickr page the addition of a services bar at the top.

It's a subtle and kind of Googley nudge to remind people that Flickr is just one part of a larger ecosystem.

So maybe Iyaz isn't so crazy after all! :)
