I personally wouldn't begrudge a company leveraging their success in one sector to boot strap another line of business but I wonder if Google doesn't need to be extremely careful in dealing with the EU. The current settlement seems a little silly to me, sort of like making Budweiser include a can of Miller Light in every 24 pack, because its "fairer" somehow.

That being said, the EU has shown itself to be extremely hostile at times to the mere suggestion of a monopoly and has landed very hard on companies, particularly North American ones, in the name of "competition." Hollywood and Microsoft have both had issues.

While the particulars of the situation are not the same, it doesn't take much imagination to envision some technocrat in Brussels demanding Google break up into separate companies because they so dominate the "public utility" of search, using the arguments of net neutrality and dumb pipes, if they aren't happy with Google's settlement implementation.

Thanks, big fan. - Allen
