tmThe new iPad Air went on sale today in 42 countries, making it Apple’s widest tablet launch yet. Prices in the US start at $499, per usual. Because no pre-orders were allowed, several Apple stores had customers lining up to buy the new tablet. The new retina iPad Mini goes on sale later this month though no date has been set.http://www.engadget.com/2013/11/01/apple-ipad-air-on-sale/

slRemember last year when the "Rockstar" consortium backed by Apple, Microsoft, BlackBerry, Sony and Ericsson closed its purchase of thousands of former Nortel patents for $4.5 billion? The team agreed to license the tech on "fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms." According to Reuters, Rockstar -- along with another company, Netstar -- has now filed a lawsuit against Google over seven of the patents, reportedly covering the ability to match internet search terms to advertising. Other companies targeted include Android-device-makers Samsung, LG, ASUS, HTC, Pantech, ZTE and Huawei. http://www.engadget.com/2013/10/31/rockstar-consortium-nortel-patent-google-lawsuit/?ncid=rss_truncated

iaI feel like the boy who cried wolf, but this time it's true. The Nexus 5 was listed on the Google Play store and it was on purpose! You could actually buy a 16GB model for $349 or a 32GB model for $399. For specs, all those leaks were pretty much right. The Nexus 5 comes in black and white, supports LTE, has a 1080p 4.95-inch screen and is powered by a 2.26GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800. Original shipping times were 3-5 days. As of this morning, the 16GB model is sold out for the time being and the 32GB version ships in 2-3 weeks. http://techcrunch.com/2013/10/31/nexus-5-announced-specs/

tmGoogle launched its Kit Kat version of Android 4.4 Thursday with Senior Vice President of Android, Chrome and AppsSundar Pichai promising “you have one version of the operating system which will run across all versions of Android smartphones.” How’s that shake out? It ships on the Nexus 5, and Kit Kat will come soon to the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus will not receive the Kit Kat update. Engadget says its sources say this is because of the TI Chipset, which TI no longer supports. HTC told Engadget the Google Play edition of the HTC One will get Kit Kat in 15 days, other unlocked versions in 30 days and all HTC Ones in 90 days. Motorola published a list of its phones that will get Kit Kat including Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx, Droid Mini and the Moto X but gave no timeframe.

slThe contents of Google's San Francisco barge have been revealed. Local CBS station KPIX 5 reports multiple sources confirm most of the barge's space will be taken up by luxury showrooms for the company's upcoming Google Glass headset, while the top floor of the barge will be a "party deck." The project is under the oversight of Google co-founder and Google X leader Sergey Brin, and the plan is to "upstage" Apple's retail stores with the "dazzling" and unusual showrooms. http://www.theverge.com/2013/11/1/5054062/google-glass-barge-san-fransisco-party-boat-rumor

iaComcast donates to Seattle mayoral candidate. Sounds like a boring story, right? Wrong! Current Seattle mayor Mick McGinn is behind a public/private initiative that would bring the city inexpensive internet with speeds up to 1Gbps for $80/month. McGinn was asked on a Reddit Ask-Me-Anything what would happen to that fiber network should he lose to challenger Ed Murray. McGinn said "I don't know, but I do know Comcast gave Murray a big pile of money." That statement insinuates that maybe a Comcast-backed Seattle mayor would favor Comcast and not a low cost alternative. A spokesperson for candidate Murray says that the city would honor the pilot program, but was noncommittal about the future of fiber in Seattle. Thanks, PCGuy8088 for submitting this to our subreddit.http://techcrunch.com/2013/10/31/is-comcast-buying-the-seattle-mayoral-election-to-dodge-homegrown-competition-not-really/

tmMany websites launch badly, but few as badly as the US government’s healthcare.org health-insurance exchange website. And rarely do websites get to call on the entire tech community to help fix problems. Google, Red Hat Oracle and other tech companies will contribute dozens of engineers and programmers in an effort help fix the website’s problems. US citizens who don’t have health insurance by March 31 may have to pay a fine of as much as 1 percent of their income.http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-10-31/google-oracle-workers-enlisted-for-obamacare-tech-surge-.html

slGoogle, Facebook,Twitter and other tech companies are all pushing back against government requests for user data — from things like publishing the numbers of government requests they receive, to conversations with officials behind closed doors. And companies are building technical fortresses intended to make their private information inaccessible to the government and spies. But their business models rely on collecting that same data, largely to sell personalized ads. As long as these companies remain ad companies, their data will continue to be a goldmine for law enforcement and spies. tmTime Warner Cable lost 306,000 TV subscribers from July through September, which it attributes to its carriage dispute with CBS. During the dispute TWC removed CBS, Showtime, and other CBS properties form its lineup and ended up issuing $15 million in credit to Showtime subscribers who lost service. By comparison, in 2012 in the same period TWC lost 29,000 subscribers. iaSomeone claiming to be from the group Anonymous is taking credit for hacking the Singapore newspaper site, Straits Times. That paper is the country's leading newspaper. The person behind the attack goes by the handle "The Messiah" and said the newspaper misled the public in its reporting of an Anonymous threat to Singapore's infrastructure. Anonymous is against Singapore's new licensing regulations for news sites. The post by The Messiah says Anonymous will attack the infrastructure of Singapore only if the Internet framework gets implemented, not otherwise. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24768053

iaGoogle’s Secret Revealed: Barge To Offer High-End Showrooms, Party Deck http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2013/10/31/googles-secret-revealed-barge-to-offer-high-end-showrooms-party-deck/

.

Almost the same story from last Friday where KPIX reports: "KPIX 5 has learned that Google is actually building a floating marketing center, a kind of giant Apple store, if you will — but for Google Glass" http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2013/10/25/secret-google-facility-found-floating-on-san-francisco-bay/

.

- KPIX says that they know what's inside the Google Barge
- Last week, KPIX said that Google is actually building a floating marketing center, a kind of giant Apple store, if you will — but for Google Glass
- KPIX's newest report says the barge will feature "luxury showrooms and party deck to market Google Glass and other gadgets to invitation-only clients"
- The building is made up of interchangeable 40-foot shipping containers. The lower three levels will serve as the showrooms with "chrome features and floor lighting."
- The top level is a party deck to feature bars and areas for VIPs to hangout
- The report also says the barge project was created at Google X and is being personally directed by Sergey Brin
- Why isn't it open yet? The project has been delayed in part because the U.S. Coast Guard labeled the building a “floating vessel” that requires federally approved safety features

Q: Assuming these details are true, what do you think of the party barge idea?

slDel. begins online blackjack, poker, roulette, slotshttp://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2013/10/31/delaware-online-gambling-begins/3327023/

.

- Delaware became the first state yesterday to launch a "full suite" of Internet gambling, hoping to revive the gambling industry
- 25 to 75 players who have registered online at sites maintained by Delaware's three racetrack casinos will be allowed to play during a week of testing of the system.
- By Nov. 8, anybody registered and physically in Delaware will be able to play blackjack, poker, roulette and slots for money, officials said.
- effort to attract younger ppl: adults ages 28 to 35 don't normally go to the casinos, where the average gambler is in his or her late 50s.
- Thomas Cook, Delaware's finance secretary - the goal is to generate new customers, not to see people who patronize the casinos gamble from their homes. If that happens, "then we have taken a step back because it's taking away business from the bricks and mortar where people are employed,"
New Jersey will begin offering Internet gaming similar to Delaware in late November
- q: casinos going the way of the bookstore/dodo?

slThis Chinese photo app has gone viral worldwide: A sign of the future or foul play?http://thenextweb.com/asia/2013/10/31/this-chinese-photo-app-has-gone-viral-worldwide-a-sign-of-the-future-or-foul-play/

- Chinese app Mo Man Xiang Ji (translated as Magic Camera App) #1 in app stores
- app prompts you to take a selfie. Once done, some ‘magic dust’ is scattered on your face, and then you are directed to a page where your face is planted on some random cartoon character.
- currently ranked sixth in the overall free apps chart in the US (and is top for photo and video apps), while it is second overall in Australia and rising quickly in the UK, Canada and Germany — as data from AppsFire shows
- weird because instructions are in chinese, western markets largely can't understand
- App Annie shows crazy growth in US this week
Ouriel Ohayon, co-founder of AppsFire, who admits he’s never seen anything like it before:
"Either there is something I am missing or they are using fishy marketing techniques to grow and get positive reviews — the reviews in the US App Stores all look strange. I can understand why it is successful in China or Asia, but its ranking in the US doesn’t make sense."
q: app isn't officially ranked in Google Play. App Store shenanigans or do we just not understand what the kids like?

iaMeet “badBIOS,” the mysterious Mac and PC malware that jumps airgaps http://arstechnica.com/security/2013/10/meet-badbios-the-mysterious-mac-and-pc-malware-that-jumps-airgaps/

.

- ArsTechnica has a story about badBIOS, a piece of malware that "jumps airgaps."
- The story explains that a security consultant Dragos Ruiu [Roo-you] noticed that some of his computers were transmitting data specific to the IPv6 networking protocol, even though those machines had IPv6 completely disabled
- To get to the bottom of this, the researcher started removing components of the machine to see if data was still being transmitted.
- After removing ethernet cables, wi-fi cards, bluetooth cards, and power cables the machines still transmitted small amounts of network data.
- Within hours or weeks of wiping an infected computer clean, the odd behavior would return.
- The most visible sign of contamination is a machine's inability to boot off a CD
- The malware also appeared to have "self-healing capabilities." In a case of a machine that had the BIOS reflashed, a new disk drive with zero data on it. What happened? The registry editor was disabled.
So what's happening?
- Ruiu's theory is that infected machines can contaminate USB devices and vice versa
- As for the network transmissions, the malware appears to be taking advantage of the high frequencies played from the computer's speakers and receiving data using the mic. When Ruiu took out the speakers and mic of infected machines, the transmissions stopped.

Q: What do you think of badBIOS? Should we all cower in fear now?

Hey Tom, Sarah, Iyaz, Jason and Darren!

A quick thought about the Pursuit story...

I really like the idea, but as we know, battery-life and data caps are two important issues on mobile (for most people), and if we start seeding data all day long, it can cause a problem there..

(I'm not really talking about the personal usages, like in the medical example, but more about the broad usages, like the replacement for the AppStore servers example).

They could obviously do what Apple is doing with iCould backups, so it will seed only when you're charging the phone and on wi-fi, but that will decrease the amount of seeders dramatically..

Have a great weekend!
Greetings from Israel

Hi TNT crew,

In episode #872, while talking about the new iPad Air, you wondered why the iPad 2 is still on the market.

There's a simple reason for that: I know a number of companies who use first and second generation iPads with custom-built peripherals, which all use the 30-pin connector. These peripherals can be pretty expensive--more costly than an iPad--so companies choose to keep the peripherals around, and replace broken iPads with an iPad 2, in stead of replacing or even re-developing the hardware.

Take care,

Angelo
