sliPad Air reviews have hit the internet, with some interesting specs. The iPad Air is 80 percent faster than the fourth-generation iPad, says Primate Labs, who put the tablet through Geekbench 3 tests. The Air's A7 processor runs at 1.4GHz -- which is 100MHz faster than the 5S, which also has an A7. The new Air is also five times faster than the iPad 2, which makes selling the second-generation ipad for $399, just $100 less than the starting price for the iPad Air, more perplexing than ever.http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57609963-37/ipad-air-benchmarks-show-80-percent-speed-bump-over-ipad-4/

iaThere's a new look for Twitter. The company announced it's going to make timelines more visual and will feature image and video previews in tweets on the web as well as its iOS & Android apps. If you don't like that auto-expand feature, you can turn it off in the app version, but not the web. Internet, commence your complaining. http://gigaom.com/2013/10/29/twitter-pulls-a-facebook-fills-your-stream-with-photos-and-videos-but-will-it-help-or-hurt/

slAt the ARM developers’ conference, Intel partner Altera announced that Intel will fabricate its ARM’s 64-bit chips starting next year. Intel's been trying to break ARM’s stronghold on the mobile market, but this move looks like the company has decided not to beat 'em, but to join 'em. Analysts say Intel is even willing to compete with semiconductor foundry leader TSMC for the business of its biggest rivals, like Nvidia and Qualcomm. So.....how long until Apple ditches Samsung for Intel? http://www.forbes.com/sites/jeanbaptiste/2013/10/29/exclusive-intel-opens-fabs-to-arm-chips/

iaAfter a $110 million settlement with the MPAA, isoHunt is back - well sort of. The new site is at isoHunt.to and it looks pretty much exactly the same as the old isoHunt.com. However, the people behind the new site are not related to the old isoHunt in any way. isoHunt.to has restored about 75% of the original site's database. http://torrentfreak.com/isohunt-resurrected-less-than-two-weeks-after-110-million-mpaa-deal-131029/

slNintendo has announced it sold 460,000 Wii U consoles worldwide in the six month period ending September 30th. Overall sales of the Wii U sit at 3.91 million globally, though Nintendo claims it will sell nine million consoles before the end of its 2014 financial year. The Wii U is still having a "negative impact" on the company's profits, Nintendo says, because of the console's price reduction in the US and Europe alongside advertising expenses, but the company says it'll drive manufacturing costs of the hardware down and improve the distribution of digital software to boost income.

iaLenovo can't stop yoga-ing its whole line up. The company introduced two new Android-based tablets called the Yoga Tablet 8 and the Yoga Tablet 10. From the side, the devices look a lot like the Apple Wireless keyboard. Both tablets feature a kickstand and will last up to 18 hours on a single charge. Inside, you're looking at a quad-core 1.2GHz Cortex-A7 processor and 1GB of RAM. The 8-inch tablet costs $249, while the 10-inch version costs $299http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/29/5043356/lenovo-yoga-tablets-hinge-long-battery-life

slGoogle showed off its second generation Google Glass. In the images of the device, two very bored looking models show off the eyewear complete with a new mono earbud. The earbud would replace the bone-conduction speaker system of the original. Google also said the new version of Glass would make it compatible with prescription lenses as well as sunglasses. Google will run an exchange program for Google Glass Explorers if they bought their Glass before October 28th, 2013. http://9to5google.com/2013/10/29/google-shows-off-second-generation-google-glass-w-mono-earbud-coming-later-this-year/

iaIf you've got Google Glass, do yourself a favor, don't wear them while driving in California. Google Glass Explorer Cecilia Abade just received a ticket for driving while wearing Google Glass. The stated reason on the moving violation is "Driving with Monitor visible to Driver (Google Glass)." Now there's a question on the legality of the ticket issued - court case, anyone?http://phandroid.com/2013/10/30/cop-tickets-woman-driving-google-glass/

slApple is replacing a "very limited" number of new iPhones after finding a manufacturing defect that has limited battery performance. Apple did not say how many phones have been affected by the manufacturing issue, however the company is apparently contacting customers by phone, suggesting the problem is pretty limited. The defect also does not affect the safety of the iPhone batteries.http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2013/10/30/apple-iphone-battery-issue/3312925/

iaYesterday, Google added some new features to Google+. Coming soon is full resolution backups of images for iOS, photo enhancement tools, and some new Auto-Awesome features like Auto-Awesome Eraser to remove things like photo bombers from your beautiful images. Google+ also started sending out emails to Plus users offering them custom domains. The first set of custom domains were sent to those users who have a profile photo, have at least 10 followers, and an account that is at least 30 days old. Darn. I was really starting to like my old plus URL of plus.google.com/u/0/110385… wait. 583… Nevermind.http://thenextweb.com/google/2013/10/29/google-starts-offering-custom-urls-accounts-30-days-old-10-followers-profile-photo/

IPAD AIR AS SUPPLEMENT TO A MACBOOKhttp://daringfireball.net/2013/10/the_ipad_air

.

- john poole at primate labs on ipad air:
iPad Air's A7 processor is running at 1.4 GHz, 100 MHz faster than the iPhone 5s' A7 processor. It's not clear if the iPad Air processor runs at a higher speed thanks to a larger battery (providing more power), a larger chassis (providing better cooling), or some combination of the two. I expect the new iPad mini's A7 processor will run at 1.4 GHz as well.
The iPad Air is over 80% faster than the iPad (4th Generation), close to the 2x increase promised by Apple.
The iPad Air is over 5x faster than the iPad 2, yet is only $100 more expensive. I do not understand why Apple kept the iPad 2 around, especially at a $399 price point. What market are they targeting?
john gruber at daring fireball - air and mini so close, mostly size difference. more a question of replacing laptop, or supplementing?

Here’s Twitter’s Answer to Banner Ads
http://digiday.com/platforms/twitters-answer-banner-ads/

.

- Twitter changed some things which is making people angry
- The new version of Twitter on the web and its iOS & Android apps now display photo and video previews expanded in a tweet
- Previously, you'd have to click a link to expand certain content w/in a tweet
- Twitter explained on a blogpost that "timelines on Twitter will be more visual and more engaging…"
- At the bottom of the tweet, there are now dedicated options for reply, retweet or favorite (before, you'd have to click the tweet, then those options would appear)
- Twitter allows users of its iOS and Android apps to turn off image previews. The web version doesn't offer this
- Jack Marshall of Digiday.com says this effectively is Twitter's answer to banner ads since brands could put images in their feeds that you can't avoid

Q: Does the change bother you? Will it alienate Twitter users?

slExclusive: Intel Opens Fabs To ARM Chipshttp://www.forbes.com/sites/jeanbaptiste/2013/10/29/exclusive-intel-opens-fabs-to-arm-chips/

.

- At the ARM developers’ conference today, Intel partner Altera announced that Intel will fabricate its ARM’s 64-bit chips starting next year. An announcement that sent shockwaves throughout the technology industry as Intel is desperately trying to break ARM’s supremacy in the mobile market.
- “It’s huge. Imagine ARM’s most powerful and technologically advanced 64-bits processor built on Intel’s leading-edge fabs. A duo that will be hard to beat,” explains Nathan Brookwood, principal analyst at Insight 64.
Intel ready to open up its leading-edge factories to whomever is willing to pay a premium, chip prices could actually come down, with the other foundries (TSMC, UMC, GlobalFoundries, Samsung, IBM or SMIC) feeling the pressure to compete.
But will Apple ditch Samsung for Intel?
q: anyone surprised?

iaIntel May Turn Over Its Web TV Project to Verizon
http://allthingsd.com/20131030/intel-may-turn-over-its-web-tv-project-to-verizon/

.

Intel's online TV service may go to Verizon
- ATD reports that Intel is in talks "to hand over control of Intel Media" to Verizon
- Intel Media is the division of Intel that was working on building a Web-based subscription TV service known as "OnCue"
- Vz already operates a pay TV service
- People familiar with the talks say the two companies are in advanced negotiations.
- ATD says it’s unclear whether Verizon would take control of the entire Intel Media unit, or if Intel would retain a piece of the Web TV project or a say in its operations.

Q: Should Intel give up on its online TV endeavors? If so, would Vz have an easier time bringing TV to the web?

- However, FB CEO Mark Zuckerberg has publicly said building a phone is the wrong strategy
- What's in it for FB? BB's got a patent portfolio valued in the range of $1-$3B. BB also has about $2.6B in cash, no debt, and that BBM service.

On yesterday's show you pretty much gave the impression that people might not really want modular phones and to a certain degree you might be right. But i've come across a few new laptops, and i really don't mean the gaming ones that have removable memory, graphics module or in a fair number of cases even CPU.

So modularity hasn't gone the way of the dodo just yet, no matter what Intel wants you to believe.

What lies there between phones or tablets? Aren't tablets just phones with no gsm voice capabilities? I mean except 3 of their components (screen, battery and case) they are basically the same.

They have a tiny logic board and the big case is there just to fit the battery and the screen. Couldn't you fit in there a 802.something module that is not really wi-fi for using with special wireless networks inside warehouses. Or how about putting in a [insert payment provider startup module here].

Or a tracking module of some sort to make sure the complementary hotel room tablet you provide your customers doesn't accidentally grow feet when they check out.

Or an upgreadable model of a very low powered wireless video transmission thing that is paired with its counterpart on a tv. Or a gazillion other useless thing that will never see the light of day if tablet modularity doesn't really become a thing different from Asus' russian doll padphone/phonepad approach.
