slSamsung missed already low expectations for its quarterly earnings guidance on Friday, leading some to believe the smartphone business is on the decline, as growth in sales of its popular Galaxy phones begins to slow and new competitors emerge to take away at its market share. The Galaxy S running Android pushed the Samsung into the top rank of smartphone makers in 2012, overtaking Apple whose iPhone had set an industry standard five years earlier.http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/07/05/us-samsung-guidance-idUSBRE9630T920130705

slSecurity researchers believe they have found a major security flaw in the Google’s Android OS, which could affect up to 99 percent of Android phones now in consumers’ hands.
Bluebox Security, a research firm, explains The flaw is a weakness in the way that Android applications verify changes to their code. The weakness would allow hackers to “turn any legitimate application into a malicious Trojan” without flagging the attention of Google’s app store, a mobile phone or the person using an application.

iaSamsung Electronics' second quarter misses forecast as smartphone worries deepen http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/07/05/us-samsung-guidance-idUSBRE9630T920130705

.

- Samsung released a guidance for its latest financial quarter, which missed quarterly expectations by 6%. Full quarterly results will be out July 26th
- Samsung's 9.5 trillion won ($8.3 billion) operating profit forecast, up 47 percent from a year ago, is a record and it is expected to report higher earnings in the current and fourth quarters as sales of its latest Galaxy S4 phone pick up and new products hit the stores
- this is raising concerns that its smartphone biz may have peaked - Fund manager at Dongbu Asset Management Jung Sang-jin says the S4 has seen disappointing sales (Samsung's JK Shin said the co ishipped 20M s4)
- Jeff Kim, an analyst at Hyundai Securites says that Samsung may be too dependent on its mobile biz as 70% of total operating profits come from mobile.
- "I think Samsung spent more on marketing expenses than expected because of the launch of Galaxy S4 smartphone, which led the company's results to miss the market consensus," HMC Investment Securities analyst Nho Geun-Chang said.
- Samsung spent more on marketing than R&D in 2012 for the first time in at least three years, and the S4 was launched in March with a Broadway-style show in New York.

Q: Samsung ships millions of phones, has yet another record quarter and investors aren't happy? What?

.

- In results published Wednesday by the Bluebox Security research firm, chief technology officer Jeff Forristal said the flaw gave hackers a “master key” into the Android system.
- security verification process that has been used on the Google Play app store since the release of Android 1.6. could leave up to 900 million devices open to hackers. The flaw: a weakness in the way that Android apps verify changes to code. hackers can “turn any legitimate application into a malicious Trojan” without detection from Google’s app store or a cell phone
- anyone who breaks into an app this way would have access to the data that app collects and — if an app made by the device manufacturer gets exploited — could even “take over normal functioning of a phone.”
-Bluebox reported the security flaw to Google in February. In an interview with CIO, Forristal said that some manufacturers have already released fixes for the problem, specifically naming the Samsung Galaxy S4.
- android running on 75% of the world’s smartphones, IDC reported in May. But a report released in March from the F-Secure security firm found that 79% of all mobile malware found in 2012 was running on Android phones.

iaDell eyes wearable computing move as PC business keeps slumpinghttp://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2013/jul/04/dell-wearable-computing-pc-business

.

- Sam Burd, Dell's global vice-president of personal computing, told the Guardian that "we're exploring ideas in [the wearable compiting] space"
- "There are challenges in cost, and how to make it a really good experience," Burd told the Guardian. "But the piece that's interesting is that computers are getting smaller. Having a watch on your wrist – that's pretty interesting, pretty appealing."
- Dell's PC revenues shrank by 9% to $8.9bn in the three months ending in May compared with the year before, and income slumped 65% to $224m – a 2.5% margin. It has also been pushed into third place in the global PC market by China's Lenovo, which is now just behind the largest PC maker, HP
- Burd said that Dell's XPS-10 (winRT) and Latitude 10 (win8) tablets have sold in the hundreds of thousands range and that businesses are slow to adopt a new OS like Win8

Q: what is the right move for dell? Wearables? Tablets? Phones?

During the most previous episode you all were talking about the Design Your Own Motorola Phone ad. You all seemed to think that the ad was talking about hardware, I always thought it meant software, the current Motorola commercials talk about Google Now, so continuing with that theme I thought there would be a new software feature in the unreleased Key Lime Pie Android update. I really hope that I am right because few people will go and create a phone when they could go inside a store to buy an already popular phone, and I am not one of them.

Introduction/Problem:

More than ever, your online freedom and privacy are under threat. Governments and ISPs want to control what you can and cannot see, while keeping a record of everything you do. Plus that “free Wi-Fi” at the coffee house, hotel, and airport is putting you at risk, because your passwords and sensitive data can be intercepted more easily than you might think.

Personal Experience:

Share your personal experience or concern with ISP spying or using public Wi-Fi. Mention any recent news regarding CISPA, PIPA, “six strikes,” etc.

Solution:

proXPN is a global VPN (virtual private network) that works with almost any internet connection. It creates a secure, encrypted tunnel through which all of your online data passes back and forth. Any online application can work with proXPN—including your web browser, email, file sharing, and instant messaging programs. proXPN keeps everything you do online hidden from prying eyes, disguising your physical location and giving you unfettered access to any website or online service, no matter where you live or travel to.

Talking Points

Complete online privacy through a 512-bit encryption tunnel.

Works via OpenVPN or PPTP. You choose!

● Protect yourself against your ISP’s “six strikes” rule.

● Bypass internet filtering and blocked websites.

● Bypass geographical restrictions for internet content and online video with worldwide servers in the US, UK, Asia, and more!

● proXPN’s software for Windows & Mac offers advanced controls, allowing you to select the programs and ports you want to anonymously route through proXPN’s servers.

● proXPN also works with your iOS or Android device, allowing you to use your data plan or public/corporate Wi-Fi with complete and total privacy on the go. No app required!
