.

- Pinterest completes big round, $225 million with late-stage investor Fidelity Investments in the lead.
- funding so soon after massive funding in February of $200M that valued the social scrapbooking company at $2.5B — pegs the latest valuation of Pinterest at $3.8B.

statement from co-founder and CEO Ben Silbermann: “We hope to be a service that everyone uses to inspire their future, whether that’s dinner tomorrow night, a vacation next summer, or a dream house someday. This new investment enables us to pursue that goal even more aggressively.”

iaGoogle Testing Huge Banner Adshttp://searchengineland.com/google-testing-top-banner-ads-174927

.

- Google has confirmed with SearchEngineLand that it is testing large banner ads for specific branded queries
- @SynrgyHQ posted an image on twitter showing a large sponsored card with an image for SouthWest airlines on top of the search results for the search “southwest airlines”
- Beneath the picture of the plane are links to Southwest Airlines and quick links to Check In, Check Flight Status
- Synrgy looked at the HTML. Despite the gray box surrounding both the banner and the text listing, the ad is comprised of the banner only.
- A Google spokesperson confirmed this is a “small experiment” running currently in the U.S. market.
- The team at Synrgy has learned from a source at Google that the “brand image experiment” is live with about 30 advertisers, including Crate & Barrel and Virgin America.

Q: Back in 2005, Google promised no banner ads on the Google homepage or web search results pages. Does this potential change bother you?

slHere’s how the Internet hurts your sleep schedule, productivity and personal lifehttp://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2013/10/22/heres-how-much-the-internet-hurts-your-sleep-schedule-productivity-and-personal-life/

.

- Scott Wallsten, a senior researcher at the Tech Policy Institute, took the American Time Use Survey, analyzed data, released findings for the National Bureau of Economic Research
- For every 10 min people spend on “online leisure time” — not working or checking e-mail — they also spend:
- 2.9 minutes less on all other types of leisure
2.7 fewer minutes working (or a more dramatic 3.75 minutes, for people in their 30s)
1.2 fewer minutes on personal care, including sleep
1 less minute travelling
42 fewer seconds on household activities
36 fewer seconds on educational activities
- in just the leisure category, people spend:
32.4 fewer seconds on offline socializing
24 fewer seconds of relaxing and thinking
9.6 fewer seconds at parties
6 fewer seconds at cultural events/institutions
- doesn't account for "multitasking", doesn’t distinguish between things like on- and offline TV-watching, or on- and offline phone calls.
Wallsten sums up: “a cost of online activity is less time spent with other people,” that fails to account for the zillion social connections that people form, and nurture, online.
q: we all live on the Internet. how much of this bothers us?

.

Michael Powell (former FCC Chair now president&CEO NCTA) at Cable-Tec Expo in Atlanta
- cable companies "should be moving with some urgency and purpose" toward implementing data caps.
- NCTA argues “Americans are accustomed to paying for what they use” and “ some critics want to force average users to pay a flat fee akin to a 'universal' service”
“Measuring gross margins on broadband service is an irrelevant exercise in a capital and labor-intensive business. The true challenge lies in recovering the fixed costs of the network investment while planning for future modernization.”
- In other words, stop looking at how much money we make and just trust that we won’t be able to afford new equipment later if we don’t charge you more for caps.
- Claims light users subsidize heavy users.
- Powell: "With DOCSIS 3.1 capable of supporting downstream speeds as high as 10Gbps and upstream speeds as high as 2Gbps, we're there and beyond."
- Capital costs for Docsis 3.0 when rolled out by JCOM in 2009 were $20 per house.
- Verizon spent $1533 per customer to roll out FIOS in 2009
- Karl Bode told Wired in January “Investors in this country are simply too myopic to wait the required length of time to see adequate returns,” Bode says. “These services are certainly profitable, they’re just not profitable enough quickly enough for short-sighted investors.”

In regards to Sarah's question about the information you would get when Automatic’s quantified car device sends a driver a text when the check enginge light comes on, the check engine light comes on when a trouble code has been saved in the computer of the car. The text message could contain that trouble code and possible reasons for that trouble code. People who would prefer to fix their own car can use that information to get the right parts to fix the problem. You can also use this information to decide if the problem is something that needs fixed now, like low oil pressure, or something that can wait until later.

Great show. I listen to you guys every day. Keep up the good work.

Joshua Healton

Dear Tom, Sarah, Iyaz & Jason,

I've been using the Automatic in my car for the last three months. On top of it giving useful driving data, the unit can be set to beep on fast accelerations, hard stops, and driving over 70mph. The real time feedback has changed how I drive, since I don't want to hear the beeps and I especially don't want passengers to hear them. Yes, these can be turned off easily, but I've noticed that I'm a much safer driver and I'm getting at least 3-4mph better gas mileage since installing Automatic.

Love the show.
