tmYesterday Sarah told you how Uk Prime Minister David Cameron was upset at Facebook for allowing a video of a beheading to be posted on its site. Facebook had changed its stance after a six-month moratorium, saying users should be free to watch and condemn such content and that “if the video were being celebrated, or the actions in it encouraged,” their approach would be different. Today Facebook decided to just go ahead and condemn it itself, saying the video appears to, improperly and irresponsibly glorify violence.” Facebook says its overall policy hasn’t changed since yesterday but advises users to post controversial content in a responsible manner.http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/22/4889456/facebook-removes-beheading-video-again

tmBe careful calling yourself a hacker. The US District Court for the State of Idaho has issued an injunction for the seizure of Southfork Security’s computers without warning on a request from competing security firm Batelle Energy Alliance. Southfork’s chief Corey Thuen used to work for Battelle, which accuses Thuen of stealing code. To issue the seizure order the judge had to be convinced that Thuen was a risk to destroy evidence. Since Southfork’s website had the phrase “we like hacking things and don’t want to stop” and two law journal articles stated hackers like to conceal their identities, Batelle argued Thuen was a hacker who must like to conceal things. The judge agreed and issued the order.http://www.digitalbond.com/blog/2013/10/22/call-yourself-a-hacker-lose-your-4th-amendment-rights/

Microsoft WebApps: Mobile Web sites in Windows Phone app's clothing
http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-webapps-mobile-web-sites-in-windows-phone-apps-clothing-7000022214/

.

- This week MS started repackaging mobile web sites and placed them in the Windows Phone store
- MS called them "Microsoft WebApps" and they were downloadable from the WP Store
- One of the web apps that MS made was a Southwest app -- SW told Neowin that "We have been in communication with Microsoft but have not given them approval to push our content." MS then removed the app from the store
- Cars.com and the Atari Arcade were also removed, but the reasons for those removals aren't known
- However, it looks like MS didn't make content owners aware of the apps it made

Q: Why the MS hate? Why not let MS make webapps for companies that aren't developing for WP?
- Some developers wondered if MS is violating its own app-development policies for WP. Particularly Requirement 2.10 that says a WP app must do more than just launch a web page.
- MS didn't comment on that, but MJF figures these apps are packaged in a way that renders the content within the app, so it's unlikely that they violate the policies

slNetflix to Expand Into Original Movies, Will Double Spending on Originals in 2014http://variety.com/2013/digital/news/netflix-to-expand-into-original-movies-will-double-spending-on-originals-in-2014-1200748504/

.

- CEO Reed Hastings said he’s “hopeful” that the company will land deals with Comcast and other pay TV providers to widen the distribution of the service for 31.1M U.S. customers.
- looking at several documentaries that would premiere on Netflix, chief content officer Ted Sarandos said on the company’s third quarter earnings call.
- Netflix’s spending on original content next year will be less than 10% of overall global content spending. About 40% of HBO’s spending is on originals, Sarandos said, “so there’s a big gap from where we are to where we could be.”
- “Orange is the New Black” will end the year as its most-watched original series ever, but does not disclose specific viewing metrics.
- Netflix noted that a biggest % of overall viewing is generated by exclusive complete season-after series. In the third quarter, Netflix launched past seasons of “The New Girl,” “The Walking Dead,” “Breaking Bad,” “Scandal,” “Revolution” and “Pretty Little Liars.”

Sarandos said, “We’re still not interested in sports. What we bring to the table is a lot of improvement because of all the attributes of on-demand, and I don’t think that brings much to sports viewing.”
q: is the future in OP or is this just Netflix playing around if bulk of biz is still on-demand?

Battelle Energy Alliance contractor for Idaho National Laboratory
- Suing ex-INL/Batelle employee Corey Thuen and his co. Southfork Security
- Thuen worked on “Sofia” software to help secure power infrastructure
- “Sofia” identifies new communication patterns. Something other software has done for years.
- Batelle wants to license the tech, Corey while at INL was pushing for it to be open source
- Corey left INL developed similar program called “Visdom”
- Batelle alleges Corey stole code.
MESSY - Court issued restraining order and allowed seizure of Corey’s computer w/o notification
- Corey’s website said “We like hacking things and we don’t want to stop.” Court found this significant.
“The tipping point for the Court comes from evidence that the defendants – in their own words – are hackers. By labeling themselves this way, they have essentially announced that they have the necessary computer skills and intent to simultaneously release the code publicly and conceal their role in that act. (underline added) “
- Batelle had to show “personas similar” might dispose of evidence. Used 2 law journal citations that hackers “use fictitious Internet protocol (IP) addresses to conceal identities” and will “learn new and more effective ways”
- Most broadly, releasing Sophia open-source has national security implications. As Battelle puts it, “Defendants plan to give away the keys to Sophia . . . to the very attackers Sophia is meant to thwart.”

Automatic Link connects phone and car for better driving, we go hands-on (video) Hands-on
http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/15/automatic-link-hands-on-test-drive/

.

- The Automatic Link is now available at Apple retail and online stores (originally going to come out in May, then was delayed to August and is finally now available.)
- Before today Automatic was selling its Link solely through its own website.
- It's a $100 device that attaches to your car's OBD II port (cars built after 1996 have this port) and connects to an iPhone via Bluetooth
- The two work together to quantify your driving habits
- It records every mile you drive and generates maps of routes you take
- It also does a rough calculation of your fuel economy and expenses based on nationwide gas prices and your vehicle make and model.
- If your check engine light comes on, Automatic alerts you via text message with detailed diagnostic information

Q: Do you think this will catch on with the mainstream with retail placement in the Apple store?

Some thoughts on BBM. Couldn't it be assumed that BBM still offers
end-to-end encryption? Also, I have both WhatsApp, and BBM with Android.

I use Google Voice, and it was a pain in the behind to get WhatsApp to use my GV number.

With BBM, I have given them my email address. and now
have an IM service that I do not have to utilize my phone number. While this is a small market, it might be big enough to keep BBM relevant if
BlackBerry does things correctly.

Just my thought,
Frank in Pittsburgh
