tmThursday, at the Hack in the Box Conference in Kuala Lumpur, researchers from Quarkslab demonstrated how an employee inside Apple could intercept messages on iMessage. Apple controls the public keys meaning you have to trust that their giving you the right one and not using their own to spy on messages. Because the key server is not public, there would be no way to tell if a key was swapped. Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller said in a statement to AllThingsD "The research discussed theoretical vulnerabilities that would require Apple to re-engineer the iMessage system to exploit it, and Apple has no plans or intentions to do so.” So in other words, trust them.http://allthingsd.com/20131018/apple-no-we-cant-read-your-imessages/

iaThe worst kept secret on the Internet continues to be the worst kept secret. The unannounced Nexus 5 made an appearance on the Google Play store at a price of $349 for a 16GB model. Clicking through to purchase the Nexus 5 led to nowhere, though. The Nexus 5 was then promptly removed from the Play store and replaced by the Nexus 4. http://www.droid-life.com/2013/10/17/nexus-5-appears-on-google-play-starting-price-of-349/

slThanks in part to the wildly successful Grand Theft Auto V bundle, NPD reports the PlayStation 3 was the best-selling games console in the US in September, breaking the 32-month streak the Xbox 360 has enjoyed. Competitors are already rejoicing: Nintendo reported that Wii U sales more than tripled month-on-month in September following a price cut and limited edition bundle with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, and Microsoft says the Xbox 360 has sold 80 million systems worldwide.http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/18/4851158/september-npd-report-ps3-beats-360

iaDuring Google's earnings call yesterday, Larry Page told the world that around 40% of YouTube's traffic comes from mobile devices. Last year, it was 25% and way back in 2011, 6%. tmApple's patent on multitouch that was used against Samsung and Motorola to win court victories was temporarily invalidated last December. However Apple's back on top again as the US Patent & Trademark office has decided to uphold patent No, 7,479,949. slAMD's financial results beat Wall Street’s expectations for the third quarter ended Sept. 30., and it's thanking its next gen game console friends. The company said today that its earnings were 4 cents a share and revenues were $1.46 billion. One of the things that helped this quarter was AMD started shipping large volumes of chips for video game consoles that are debuting this fall: the Sony PlayStation 4 and the Microsoft Xbox One.http://venturebeat.com/2013/10/17/amd-beats-earnings-targets-as-game-console-revenue-kicks-in/

tmThe Wall Street Journal reports Lenovo has signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement with BlackBerry in order to review BlackBerry's financial statements. That's a sign that Lenovo is at least considering buying some or all of BlackBerry. Being headquartered in Beijing, Lenovo would likely have difficulty getting approval to buy the security technology but it might make sense to buy just the device manufacturing. Other companies like Google, SAP, Cisco and INtel have also been rumored to be considering buying some of BlackBerry.http://www.engadget.com/2013/10/17/lenovo-blackberry-bid/?ncid=txtlnkusaolp00000601

slApple: No, We Can’t Read Your iMessages (And We Don’t Want to, Either)http://allthingsd.com/20131018/apple-no-we-cant-read-your-imessages/

.

- security outfit QuarksLab says Apple could intercept iMessage communications, although they said they couldn't “Apple can read your iMessages if they choose to, or if they are required to do so by a government order,” QuarksLab said in a white paper presented Thursday at the Hack in the Box conference.
- HOW IT WORKS Because Apple controls the keys used to encrypt iMessages between sender and the recipient, it could theoretically conduct a so-called “man-in-the-middle attack” on the two, making sender and recipient believe they are chatting directly and securely with one another, when they aren’t — and reviewing their communications.
- QUARKSLAB: “What we are not saying: Apple reads your iMessages. What we are saying: Apple can read your iMessages if they choose to, or if they are required to do so by a government order.”
Q: how much does apple's insistence matter here in wake of NSA surviellance?

iaYup, Nokia's designing a watch too (update: video) http://www.engadget.com/2013/10/17/nokia-watch-patent-application-wearable-tech/

.

Facet Watch Concepthttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bxn_N4vHqXQVIDEO (pre-roll)

.

- Yesterday, a story about Nokia's patent for a watch popped up.
- The watch would include modular screens that would snap into a wristband
- Each screen would have specific data on it.
- Then Kent Lyons, one of the guys behind the device, directed Engadget to a concept video of such a device called the "Facet"
- In the video, you see a bracelet that houses 6 screens, each about the size of the wearable iPod nano.
- Sure enough, each screen has a dedicated app on it. However, the Facet can do things like expand an app to multiple or all segments, collapse, and swap apps with a gesture

Q: This is a bulky prototype concept device -- but even if it was refined, would you want to wear this kind of device?

Email

.

Hey TNT Crew,

Thanks for all the information gathering you do, as that saves me a lot of time. On the subject of the new email based Square payments service you discussed in episode #862, what are they doing about the possibility to spoof email headers? I have to say that I haven't looked at any of the technical aspects of the service, or of email spoofing for a while.

Wouldn't it be possible to send a payment email with the sender field filled with someone's address whom you know has the email payments set up?

Just something to think about, and I may be wrong,

-Will from Northern WI
"Square verifies each Square Cash email to authenticate that it comes from a legitimate sender. For added security, we send you a text confirmation each time you send Cash if you have linked your mobile phone number."
