iaAndroid Police got its hands on the latest Google Glass firmware and tore it apart to find the delicious insides. Okay Glass, that was creepy. Anyway, Android Police found a bunch of new voice commands in the GlassVoice.apk that suggests that you'll be able to ask Glass to do things like check you in to a location, call you a car, and more. There also appears to be more music controls with data found in the Music_Card.xml file.http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/10/16/apk-teardown-latest-google-glass-firmware-gives-a-tantalizing-glimpse-at-a-ton-of-future-features/

tmUbuntu also has its day in the sun today. The regular October OS update 13.10 code named Saucy Salamander arrived though with only minor updates. The Unity interface's Dash view got an overhaul but XMir, the transitional step from the X Server to Mir display interface, was deferred to the April update. 13.10 also features the first true release of Ubuntu Touch for mobile devices. The release is compatible with Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 handsets, though Canonical says this release is really aimed at manufacturers to get them to build more compatible devices.http://thenextweb.com/mobile/2013/10/17/ubuntu-13-10-now-available-comes-first-stable-version-ubuntu-touch-smartphones/

iaTwitter Plans to Revamp Its Private Messaging Product http://allthingsd.com/20131017/twitter-plans-to-revamp-its-private-messaging-product/

.

- According to AllThingsD's sources Twitter is going to "significantly update its direct-messaging product in the near future"
- Part of the update is allowing others to receive DMs from people they aren't following
- Twitter has kicked around the idea of launching a standalone direct-messaging application separate from the Twitter app (It is unclear, however, what form the final revamp of direct messages will take.)
- ATD says Twitter has taken note of Snapchat and Twitter ran surveys that fond people are using Snapchat to engage more with others
- Earlier in the year, Twitter also met with employees from MessageMe, another popular mobile-messaging application
- It is likely that we will the updates before the year’s end

Q: Currently, DMs are hidden under the Me tab. Do you think Twitter should make DMs a separate product?

slFacebook loosens privacy policy on teens' postshttp://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-1017-facebook-teens-20131017,0,641515.story

.

- age 13-17 can now post publicly. used to be just friends & friends of friends
- teens now can also let people "follow" them on Facebook and see posts that are made public, similar to Twitter.
- how it works: When teens join the service, privacy settings automatically set to share information only with friends. Teens who choose to change their settings will be asked twice with a pop-up notification whether they are sure they want to share information broadly
- Jim Steyer, founder and chief executive of Common Sense Media, says this is about targeted advertising. "This pop-up notification before making a post public may also be seen as a ploy that somehow implies these teens are giving Facebook the green light to mine their content, and that is entirely unacceptable," Steyer said.
- Privacy groups recently sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission asking it to examine the data Facebook collects on teens.
q: data mining? keeping up with the competiton? what is FB thinking here?

slFacebook ad profit a staggering 1,790% more on iPhone than Androidhttp://venturebeat.com/2013/10/16/facebook-ad-profit-a-staggering-1790-more-on-iphone-than-android/

.

- study study is by Nanigans, one of the biggest buyers of Facebook ads - of over 200 billion ads on FB, mobile ads on iPhone generate 1,790% more return on investment than ads on Android.
"“For the first three quarters of 2013, RPC [revenue per click] on iOS averaged 6.1 times higher than Android and ROI [return on investment] on iOS averaged 17.9 times higher than Android.”
- advertising on Android actually costs more than it returns. specifically, advertising on iOS brings retailer 162% more cash than they spend on the ads, advertising on Android returns 10% less than the cost of the ads.
- desktop: clickthroughs are up 375% and overall return on investment is 152%.
- costs of advertising on Facebook mobile apps doesn’t really vary between Android and iOS, with CPMs (cost per thousand impressions) of $4.99 for iPhone and just slightly lower, $4.87, for Android.
q: iphone users make more $, spend more $? can't be that simple?

iaLatest Google Glass Firmware Gives A Tantalizing Glimpse At A Ton Of Future Featureshttp://www.androidpolice.com/2013/10/16/apk-teardown-latest-google-glass-firmware-gives-a-tantalizing-glimpse-at-a-ton-of-future-features/

.

- AndroidPolice's Liam Spradlin took a look inside the latest Google Glass Firmware

GlassVoice.apk which has lots of options for the "ok Glass" menu.
- "take note" for recording voice memos in Evernote, "post update" for Path, "Find a recipe," "capture me a panorama" and more
- Some of these make sense as features that would be baked right in to Glass, while others sound like new or additional functionality for Glassware.

- Music: the firmware adds an actual layout for music items. Music_Card.xml includes album art, album name, track name, and artist's name.
- Google eye control (found in the Gaze folder) now has a "double blink" detector

Q: This make you more excited, less excited, or no change in your reaction to Google Glass?

Just finished listening to TNT #862 on if Path has any users outside the tech bubble? I for one have been using Path for over a year (I'm an educator my wife works in the medical field and we have two kids under 6) For both sets of Grandparents and 30 plus family members that get our feeds this is been a total godsend that they don't have to weed through Facebook to see their grandchildren or cousins.

Of note, many hospitals here in Toronto advise new parents to use closed social networks to share information about their children and Path is singles out as the best platform to do it. I think more families are using Path that don't have anything to do with being within the tech bubble.
