tmReuters reports Apple has told manufacturers it will cut orders of the iPhone 5C for the final three months of the year. Investors reacted positively to this news as it seems to indicated consumers are buying the higher-priced iPhone 5S in greater numbers than expected. Canaccord Genuity analysts said the iPhone 5S is outselling 5C by 2.5 times to 1, boosting Apple's margins. Reuters source said Pegatron had their order for the 5C cut by 20% and a WSJ source said FoxConn had their order cut by a third. Analysts point out that the complexity of the supply chain means a cut in manufacturing may or may not correlate with lower sales.http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/10/16/us-apple-5c-idUSBRE99F08J20131016?feedType=RSS&feedName=technologyNews

tmIntel's earnings beat analysts estimates but remained flat year over year. The company reported revenue of $13.48 billion and earnings of 58 cents a share. Analysts had expected $13.47 billion and earnings of 53 cents a share. CEO Brian Krzanich announced the 14-nanometer Broadwell chip will be delayed until the first quarter of 2014. Broadwell will mean devices can be thinner lighter and faster with longer battery life. The delay in Broadwell should not delay it's successor, Skylake.http://venturebeat.com/2013/10/15/intel-says-hardware-bargains-to-multiply-this-fall-99-tablets-299-haswell-laptops-349-2-in-1-hybrids/#lDjss1O0TC4yzIAX.99

slResearchers from the University of Buffalo, New York have tested an "underwater wi-fi" network in a lake in an attempt to make a "deep-sea internet". The team says the technology could help detect tsunamis and create reliable warning systems. Unlike normal wi-fi, which uses radio waves, the submerged network technology utilises sound waves. Sound waves provide a better option than radio waves, just ask dolphins. the challenge now with Wireless communication underwater is getting separate systems used by different organisations to communicate with each other.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24550015

tmAkamai's state of the Internet report is out. Among the findings, Indonesia bumped out China as the source of the most malicious traffic with 38% to 33%. The US is third with a measly 6.9%. Global average peak connection speed reached 18.9 Mbps. The fastest place on Earth is Hong Kong with an average 65.1 Mbps connection speed. Most interesting to some is that for the first time since 2008 Port 445, the Microsoft-DS file-sharing port, is no longer the favorite for attackers. HTTP Port 80 and SSL port 443 take that honor. Attacking via the Web is now more popular than Windows. We have truly moved into the cloud.http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-57607722-83/microsoft-ds-no-longer-hackers-top-target/

- net earnings for the third quarter were $297M, down 91% from a year ago - BUT 2012's Q3 net earnings included a net gain of $2.8B related to the sale of Alibaba Group shares, which is part of the reason why the earnings are so much less this year.

- FT says they are working on three phones together with one of the phones close to completion

WaPo's Timothy Lee reporting on PiracyData.org
- Site created by software engineer Matt Sherman with policy researchers at Mercatus Center
- Matches TorrentFreak's top pirated movie's with CanIStream.it's availability
- To pirated movies mostly not available legally
- Team leader Jerry Brito started site in response to criticisms that Googl doesn't do enough to combat infringing sites
- MPAA spokesperson Kate Bedingfield "If a particular film isn't available for stream or purchase at a given moment, however, it does not justify stealing it from the creators and makers who worked hard to make it."

slPath cuts 20 percent of staff, says layoffs will 'support continued innovation'http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/15/4842360/path-cuts-20-percent-of-staff

.

- Path spokesperson told Valleywag "We're working to realign the company to support continued innovation and Path 4.0." & "It's just a realignment of the company. I wouldn't read anything into it. The business is strong we have 20 million users."
- no engineers were included in the staff reduction, spokesperson tells the Verge
- Path is still seeking a lead investor for a new round for capital for Morin's grand sticker distribution project, but at a $400 million valuation, not the $500 million valuation TechCrunch reported in July.
- Last month, Path introduced subscriptions for its mobile applications, charging users $1.99 for a month on Android, $4.99 for three months on iOS, and $14.99 for a year covering both platforms. That premium membership promised benefits like new stickers and photo filters
q: when a "closed" network discourages growth and nobody buys stickers/subs, is it doomed?

Hi y'all,

I want to comment on 2 things:

I am a proud Pebble watch owner. I agree, watches are a place to be notified about what my phone is trying to tell me without always needing to take my phone out. Google Now would be great if you live in the Google ecosystem (Gmail, Google Calendar...).

[My other comment is about the customer service reps I encountered in an MMO game]

An in-game GM from WOW carried a 5 Minute conversation with me about in-game stuff not related to my query.

Plus he emoted silly things during our conversation, like " swoops in to rescue from harm"... Customer Service is everything on a subscription service.
