slNSA mines data to map Americans' social connections, report sayshttp://www.theverge.com/2013/9/28/4780448/nsa-mines-data-to-map-americans-social-connections-report-says

.

- A report by NYT says that since 2010, the NSA has been building a social graph capable of identifying Americans' associates, locations, etc. NSA is required to cite a foreign intelligence interest before running a query, but does not have to ensure that every email address and other piece of search data has a foreign origin.
- report is based on documents provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden and the Times' own interviews. NSA builds a detailed portrait of its targets by linking metadata from many different sources: bank codes, insurance information, Facebook profiles, passenger manifests, voter registration rolls and GPS location information, as well as property records and unspecified tax data
- metadata analysis used to be limited to foreigners.
- "Mainway" is NSA tool for metadata. in 2011, Mainway ingested 700M phone records every day & started taking in an additional 1.1B cellphone records per day from an undisclosed US service provider. In its 2013 budget request to Congress, the NSA revealed that it intends to build a metadata collection system that records 20B discrete events per day and can process them within an hour.
q: big waste of big data? or inevitable with so much info floating around?

- NBC also has an article up on the same thing: Experts on motion sickness say the sharpness of the screen and the motion of the icons may be partly to blame.
- "Seeing a three-dimensional space, on a phone you know is flat," can trigger queasy feelings, psychologist Frederick Bonato, of Montclair State University in New Jersey,

Q: This kind of story has been popping up since iOS 7 launched. Do you expect Apple to actually do something about this?

Hi,

Love the shows as always.

Just wanted to ask the round table's opinion on something that has been needling me since the days of AT&T wanting to buy T-mobile.

What if Amazon bought T-mobile for their spectrum and existing customer base and then bought Blackberry for the hardware and the reputation of security of their software. Amazon could then merge the amazon/android os with Blackberry's OS. Amazon already has a built in store with thousands of apps that Blackberry was sorely missing.

Also with T-mobile's sim card usage Amazon could sell phones unlocked because honestly once they have your money they wouldn't care if the person was a contract or pay-by-month subscriber like T-Mobile is doing now.

It's just Amazon has access to so many more phones. Presently, the market for T-mobile is smaller then most, but with Amazon backing maybe that market would grow and improve.

Thanks for letting me vent,

Nicky
