slWhile at an event in Seoul Korea showing off the Galaxy Gear and Galaxy Note 3, Samsung executives said that the company plans to "introduce a curved display smartphone in October," but no info on price, release date, or even what operating system it would be using. The Nexus S already has a slight curve on its glass, but not the actual screen. Samsung applied for a recent patent for a smartphone that is curved along its vertical axis, so maybe more curve is coming.http://www.theverge.com/2013/9/24/4768264/samsung-shows-off-working-curved-screen-smartphone

tmJessica Lessin reports that sources tell her that Nest Labs, the folks that brought you the hippest Thermostat since-- ever-- have been developing a smoke detector. Among the features might be the ability to wave a hand to cancel an alarm, presumably when your tofurkey is burning or something, and the expected messages sent to you over the Internet when the thing goes off. That last might be a subscription service that Nest could make a little revenue off.http://jessicalessin.com/2013/09/24/exclusive-next-for-nest-a-smoke-detector/

slFinland’s biggest newspaper "Helsingin Sanomat" reports that Nokia has pleaded with former CEO Stephen Elop to take a smaller bonus due to disapproval and protest in Finland, based on Nokiia’s chairman of the board claiming that Elop’s bonus arrangements were similar to those of previous chief executives. Nokia admitted yesterday that Elop had in fact received a contract that seemed to guarantee a quick $25 million pay-off if Elop was able to sell the handset unit. http://bgr.com/2013/09/24/nokia-elop-bonus-scandal/

iaRealNetworks just introduced a new service called RealPlayer Cloud. The service lets users upload and share personal videos. You'll get 2GB for free -- if you want more space, you'll have to pony up some dough. Real released RealPlayer Cloud apps for iOS, Android, Roku, and Windows. There's also a web component if installing a Real product on your PC makes you feel dirty. http://in.reuters.com/article/2013/09/25/realnetworks-internet-idINL2N0HK00720130925

tmI think we all agree YouTube comments could use improvement. Well Google+ is there to help a brother Google division out. Comments in YouTube will now be based on relevance not chronology, just like in Google+'s news feed and hallelujah, replies will now actually be nested under the comments they're replying to! Also if you share a video on G+, comments you make on YouTube will show up in both places.http://www.engadget.com/2013/09/24/youtube-google-plus-comments/

slBloomberg reports that China's largest e-commerce company Alibaba group may be considering going public in the US, rather than the more obvious Hong Kong exchange, and cites people familiar with the plans that Alibaba is in talks with US law firms. Alibaba founder Jack Ma reportedly wants to have dual shareholder voting classes to maximize his control over the company. The Hong Kong Exchange doesn't allow for such an arrangement, but the The NYSE does.http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-57604543-92/alibaba-eyes-us-ipo-after-hong-kong-falls-through-report/

iaT-Mobile's CFO Braxton Carter said that he expects that there will be more consolidation in the US wireless market. iaYouTube Announces A New Commenting System, Powered By Google+, With Threaded, Ranked And Private Conversationshttp://techcrunch.com/2013/09/24/youtube-announces-a-new-google-powered-commenting-system/

.

YouTube enlists Google+ to fix the world's worst commentshttp://www.theverge.com/2013/9/24/4766758/youtube-introduces-radical-redesign-of-comments-tied-to-google

.

- YouTube announced a new commenting system powered by Google+ [commenting requires a G+ account]
- It's launching on channel discussion tabs and will roll out to all videos over the next few weeks and months
- The comments will be automatically ranked, be threaded, and there are now private conversations
- Nundu Janakiram, a YT product manager, told Techcrunch that comments from the video creator would be ranked very highly. Comments from popular personalities on YT and people in your Google+ circles will be higher up
- Comments can still be voted up or down
- Once YouTube switches to the new system, all of the old comments will still be in the system and intermixed with the new ranked and threaded comments.
- YT is also introducing a number of new tools for content producers to manage comments. Video makers can create a list of approved users who can always comment on a video based on their Google+ circles
- YT video makers can also create a blacklist and block users
- YT won't tell users they've been blocked and will continue to show them their own comments when they are logged in (even if the comment was blocked)
- Google says you can still comment on YouTube using a pseudonym, if you use one when you create a Google+ account

Q: Will this bring highbrow discussions to the famously horrible YouTube comments section?

slSony unveils bevy of Walkman devices, puts premium on hi-res audio playbackhttp://www.engadget.com/2013/09/25/sony-unveils-bevy-of-walkman-devices/

.

- new walkmans! ZX1 and F880 series, both have 1GHz dual-core processors, 854 × 480 touchscreens, WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, an "S-Master HX" digital amp and high-res audio playback (192kHz/24bit) in AIFF, ALAC, FLAC and WAV.
- both run Android 4.1, they access Google Play they can run games and apps.
- ZX1 comes to Japan on December 7th with 128GB of storage, and a lofty price of 75,000 yen, or roughly $760.
- F880 comes to Japan in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB options -- each available in black, blue, pink or white -- priced at 27,000, 30,000 and 40,000 yen (about $273, $304 and $405)
- S series Walkmans as its most battery-conscious option; the thing is said to last through 77 hours of music playback
q: are there enough music nuts who want these devices that promise better quality than an iPod/device that does it all?

iaWith its new cloud player, RealNetworks is trying the next big turnaround http://gigaom.com/2013/09/24/realplayer-cloud-launch/

.

Real.comhttp://www.real.com/

.

- RealNetworks is back with RealPlayer Cloud
- It's kind of like Dropbox for videos
- You upload your video to Real then you can access that video on iOS, Android, Roku, Windows or the web when you sign in with your RealPlayer Cloud credentials (you can do that via FB connect)
- If you have your multiple devices with RealPlayer Cloud on the same network, you can view and send videos w/in the network:
- In my case, I was able to to stream video I took from my Galaxy S4 and watch it on my iPad w/o uploading it to Real although I received an "inadequate connection" prompt that offered the option to download the video to the ipad. Vids streamed from the iPad to the S4 no problem. You have to be signed in with the same account to view videos from device to device
- A Chromecast app is in the works.
- For uploads, clips consumers shoot with their own camera have no time limit. Other videos being uploaded are limited to 15 minutes
- You get 2GB free, more space will cost you $5 per month for 25GB, $10 for 100GB and $30 for 300GB.
- Real touts that you don't have to worry about formats - you can move videos from your computer and this is more private than FB or YT. [People don't have to have accounts with Real to view the vids either]

Q: Is this kind of video sharing solving an actual problem for users?

Hey TNT crew,

In episode 845 you discussed Valve's SteamOS announcement, I'm an avid PC gamer and have been thinking about that, trying to piece together what we know.

I'm actually seeing a lot of parallels here with Google's Android.
Think about it:
- an Open-Source (GNU/Linux based) operating system developed by a major player.
- Freely downloadable and Hardware agnostic.
- Intended to allow 3rd party manufacturers to build hardware for. (They handle the production and supply issues, which presumably have lower margins)
- Valve gets every new customer immediate access to its app-store Steam, and potentially using its other yet-to-be-announced services.
- Steam already resembles the Google play store (and apple's app store) and Valve has pledged to help develop additional API software (and improve LLVM, which could become part of their defacto SDK.)

I can imagine a future where Microsoft with the xBox mirrors Apple with the iPhone as the closed source, but still popular livingroom appliance, while 3rd party makers like Xi3, Samsung, HP, ZTE, LG, Dell, Peuget systems, Corsair, (maybe Sony?) and others build systems for users who don't want to build their own.

What do you think? Am I crazy or does this make sense to anyone else?

- Alex
