iaPandora won a case in federal court that would allow the company to keep its library of ASCAP songs. A group of songwriters and music publishers were trying to limit the number of songs it would license to Pandora under its 2011 deal and wanted to negotiate license fees directly with Web radio services. U.S. District Judge Denise Cote granted Pandora summary judgment because the language of the contract between ASCAP and Pandora "unambiguously requires Ascap to provide Pandora with a license to perform all of the works in its repertory."http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/09/18/net-us-publishing-pandora-idUSBRE98H02Q20130918?feedType=RSS&feedName=technologyNews

slGoogle purchases entire output of a 240MW Texas wind farm, will start producing energy in late 2014http://thenextweb.com/google/2013/09/17/google-purchases-entire-output-of-a-240mw-texas-wind-farm-which-will-start-producing-energy-in-late-2014/

.

- Google has purchased the entire output of a 240MW wind farm outside of Amarillo, Texas. expected to start producing energy in late 2014.
- Happy Hereford. owned by Chermac Energy based in Oklahoma. will provide energy to the Southwest Power Pool (SPP). same grid that serves Google’s Mayes County, Oklahoma data center.
- not an investment. google previously invested $75 million into a 50MW wind farm and $200 million in a 161MW facility. at end of 2012 all of google's renewable energy projects together were capable of generating an estimated 2 gigawatts of power.
- google has now contracted for more than 570MW, which it estimates is enough energy to power approximately 170,000 US households.
"After purchasing the renewable energy, we’ll retire the renewable energy credits (RECs) and sell the energy itself to the wholesale market. We’ll apply any additional RECs produced under this agreement to reduce our carbon footprint elsewhere."
REC: tradable, non-tangible energy commodities in the United States that represent proof that 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity was generated from an eligible renewable energy resource. Once in the grid, renewable energy is impossible to separate from the conventionally generated energy.
q: good for the planet? or just google wanting a wind farm and working within gov constraints

Project Mighty being used with Napoleonhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=KstD0WZ55I8#t=183VIDEO

.

- Adobe's coming out with hardware in 2014
- Back in May, Adobe took the wraps off its "Project Mighty" and "Project Napoleon"
- Both devices will be released in the first half of next year. Prices and exact release date aren't disclosed yet
- "We're doing the minimum amount of hardware necessary to be a better software company, Michael Gough, Adobe's vice president of experience design, said. "We have no intention of becoming a hardware company."

Q: Adobe has made the move from boxed software to subscription software -- now an entry into hardware. Do you buy this "minimum amount of hardware" statement from Adobe?
- Project Mighty is an internet-connected stylus that uses Bluetooth Low Energy. It's designed to work with an iPad. The stylus itself is pressure sensitive. Pair that with Adobe software and you're on your way to becoming the next Len Peralta

- The Mighty is being built by Adonit, maker of the Jot tablet stylus
- Project Napoleon is a short ruler - kudos to Adobe for that name. It's designed to let you draw more precise shapes. It's also bluetooth enabled. When you draw against the Napoleon, the the line you draw will extend beyond the actual ruler to create straight lines.

Heya TNT-ers

In episode 841 you read a "message from Derek" in which he claims that QWERTY keyboard was designed to slow typists. This is a common myth, but the Smithsonian provides contrary evidence:

"In a 2011 paper, the researchers tracked the evolution of the typewriter keyboard alongside a record of its early professional users. They conclude that the mechanics of the typewriter did not influence the keyboard design. Rather, the QWERTY system emerged as a result of how the first typewriters were being used. "

http://blogs.smithsonianmag.com/design/2013/05/fact-of-fiction-the-legend-of-the-qwerty-keyboard

It turns out, QWERTY was actually designed to make typing faster... at least for the telegraph typers.

Hi all,

I was thinking about your discussion using Bump about a particular use case. What I had always wished bump could be used for was to seamlessly transition either video or web browsing from your mobile device to your TV or your computer.

Imagine using your mobile device to watch a movie, and you walk into your house, and want to watch it on your TV. All you have to do is bump your cell on the TV and cont to watch where you left off and vice-versa.

There could be a similarly easy transition between phone and computer while browsing the web that would be fantastic.

Of course google tries to accomplish this with web browsing but they could make it seamless with Bump technology.

Do it google!

George
