slLaws that would heavily fine software and internet companies for failing to make their products wiretap-friendly are likely to start riots, thanks to eye-opening information about how the government collects data, due to people like Edward Snowden. Before Snowden, a proposed law President was reportedly ready to back would have been a compliance regime for technology companies. But violating the civil rights of the general population doesn't sit well, even though wiretaps are legitimate ways to curb crimes. Tech companies are now in a position to "go dark" technically, but will they?

slTech Companies and Government May Soon Go to War Over Surveillancehttp://www.wired.com/opinion/2013/08/stop-clumping-tech-companies-in-with-government-in-the-surveillance-scandals-they-may-be-at-war/

.

- same day detailed documents made public on the NSA’s X-Keyscore collection program, the Facebook engineering team published a blog post stating that all access to Facebook via apps and web browsers was now SSL encrypted.
- governments used to lean on compromised certificate authorities to allow them to intercept encrypted traffic. Iranian government is one example, until Google made changes to the Chrome browser to stop the practice. Similar updates are expected soon in Internet Explorer.
- Wired asks: there’s no law stopping companies like Apple, Facebook, and Google from introducing security changes or forcing them to build in backdoors. Why would Apple want its users migrating to cross-platform, anti-snooping messaging apps like Hemlis (by the founders of The Pirate Bay)? Especially when the company could push itself out of the surveillance business with its own technical tweaks before federal regulations force them to become key players in warrant execution.
q: issue isn't going away, so how do the tech companies play this?

iaMicrosoft Said to Be in Talks to Invest in Foursquare http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-08-29/microsoft-is-said-to-be-in-talks-to-invest-in-foursquare.html

.

- Bloomberg reports that Microsoft and American Express are competing to take an equity stake in Foursquare
- These are competing bids, not a joint bid
- Foursquare is talking with other companies about a possible investment (Yahoo was rumored to be working on a deal for Foursquare data)
- MS has a stake in Facebook
- AmEx could use Foursquare to compete with credit-card rivals by tying marketing and loyalty programs to social-media sites.

Q: Which company makes a better fit for Foursquare?

slDollar for dollar raised, Kickstarter dominates Indiegogo SIX times overhttps://medium.com/p/2a48bc6ffd57

.

kickstarter public statshttp://www.kickstarter.com/help/stats

.

- researchers Jonathan Lau and Edward Junprung compared kickstarter and indiegogo. KS has public data. for IGG, built a bot that scraped IGG’s projects section, which contains all campaigns ever launched. bot ran on aug 17, Indiegogo had about 4900 pages of campaigns.
- Kickstarter (KS) has over 110,000 campaigns while our scrape found 44,000 campaigns on Indiegogo (IGG). However, through multiple scrapes over a month, we discovered that IGG de-list failed campaigns that raised less than $500.
- KS ($612M) has successfully raised over 6 times more dollars than IGG ($98M).
- KS has had 40 projects raise $1M+ while IGG only has had 3.
- The average success rate on KS is 44%. Based on the total number of campaigns we found in our scrape, we calculate IGG’s success rate to be 34%. However, if we factor in the de-listed failed campaigns, IGG’s success rate drops significantly.
- KS and IGG had near the same unsuccessful dollars (KS $83M vs IGG $70M) despite KS raising over 6 times more money
- 40% of dollars that IGG raised were generated from campaigns that raised more than $100,000
q: kickstarter kicks IGG's butt. amazon of crowdfunding? or just an evolving space?

slIn Facebook’s Proposed Privacy Policy Updates, Your Face Pics Really Do Matterhttp://allthingsd.com/20130829/in-facebooks-new-privacy-policy-updates-your-face-pics-really-do-matter/

.

- FB new privacy policy on 9/5.
- makes it more clear that it uses personal data about its 1.2B users to deliver advertising, including things we share and do, what we like, how we interact with ads and applications, & our demographic data
- might use its customers’ profile photos to help their friends tag them in photos. Those photos are already public, but Facebook does not currently use them to help recognize faces when photos are uploaded to the service. you can opt out. exact proposed language change: “We are able to suggest that your friend tag you in a picture by scanning and comparing your friend’s pictures to information we’ve put together from your profile pictures and the other photos in which you’ve been tagged.”
- If Facebook can keep track of when you pop up in photos uploaded by you and others, that’s a good way to trace your interactions across your network of friends: Who you’re spending time with, who you have the most in common with, who are your actual, real-world friends and not just Facebook friends.
- like previous policy changes, FB will let users comment & suggest amendments
q: time to change your profile pic to your dog's face? or is this good for users?

This is Brian from Minnesota, and in a recent episode I didn't hear you talk about what I thought was the best use of a camera that can see your emotions: Netflix recommendations. If I sit down in front of the television, slumped down with depression, it could recommend some good standup comedy. Or, if paired with a Kinect, after watching a few episodes of My Little Pony with the kids, it could see whether or not they're still around and perhaps offer an episode of Breaking Bad to counteract all the pastel colors (or maybe offer another episode if I'm still in the mood for one :) )

Keep up the good work,
Brian from Minnesota
