slEarlier this year, Andy Rubin, creator of Android, abruptly stepped down from the team, and now another executive is on his way out. Hugo Barra, vice president of product management for Android, is leaving for a job as vice president of Xiaomi Global. Xiaomi is a Chinese company which builds Android phone and handles both hardware, and software that runs on top of Android. Barra joined Google in March of 2008 and came from speech technology firm Nuance.http://allthingsd.com/20130828/androids-hugo-barra-departs-google-for-chinas-xiaomi/

iaThe feature creep in Twitter continues. Twitter has altered the way it shows conversations on its apps and on the web. There is now a blue vertical line showing that the tweets in your stream are connected. You'll see up to three tweets in the conversation in your stream with the option to expand it to see the whole yap-fest. Of course with any Twitter change, people are upset. In other news, apparently no one I follow talks to each other. http://thenextweb.com/twitter/2013/08/28/twitter-rolling-out-new-conversations-ui-for-web-iphone-and-android/

slSkype is 10 years old, and is celebrating by going 3D! Microsoft's corporate vice-president for Skype, Mark Gillett. told the BBC in an interview that the company had created a 3D solution. But don't get too excited yet, this technology might be years away. gillet says that while many TVs and computers carry 3D capability, "the capture devices are not yet there. As we work with that kind of technology you have to add multiple cameras to your computer, precisely calibrate them and point them at the right angle." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23866593

.

iaI miss talking about Twitter, so here's some more Twitter news. Twitter just bought social TV tracking service Trendrr. AllThingsD says that Twitter will kill off Trenderr's analytics product "after all of the company's current contracts are up." Trendrr also was behind the product Curatorr which let companies create a curated timeline of tweets around a specific event.

slVerizon and Vodafone are back in talks of a buyout. Verizon wants to buy back Vodafone's stake in their Verizon U.S. wireless joint venture in a deal that could cost Verizon well over $100 billion, people familiar with the matter said, and that Verizon is in discussions with banks about the tens of billions of dollars in loans it would need to complete the deal. http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB10001424127887324324404579041430197331704-lMyQjAxMTAzMDIwODEyNDgyWj.html

iaThe BlackBerry Q10, not to be confused with the Q10 bus I used to ride in Queens, is not selling too well. According to the WSJ, one retailer who operates 16 stores said they saw "virtually no demand for the Q10 and eventually returned most" to the equipment vendor. Used phone dealers are also not seeing an influx of BlackBerry devices that you'd typically see with updated device releases. The Q10 went on sale at Verizon and AT&T earlier this summer; BlackBerry hasn't disclosed any sales numbers for the device. http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57600574-94/blackberry-q10-sales-abysmal-says-report/?part=rss&subj=news&tag=title

slTMOnews reports that T-Mobile is planning blackout dates between September 20th and 22nd, which, if true, sound very iPhone related. This lines up with previous rumors that September 20th is a potential launch day for the next-generation iPhone 5S/5C. or maybe it's related to a Note III launch expected to be announced on September 4th. Does a Note III launch warrant an all hands on deck situation at T-Mobile? If i had any money to bet, I'd put it on Apple. http://www.tmonews.com/2013/08/t-mobile-scheduling-employee-blackout-dates-for-september-20th-22nd/

iaInstapaper just got a redesign. The read later service was bought by Betaworks in April. The web version of Instapaper is the first property to get a new look. It still relies heavily on text and uses a two column layout similar to the iOS app. Betaworks says expect updated iOS and Android apps in the next few weeks. http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/28/4669332/instapaper-web-interface-completely-redesigned

slUK mobile operator Three has released a rollout schedule and pricing details for its 4G launch. The first three cities to get 4G will be London, Birmingham and Manchester, beginning in December, and Three says it will speed up the process in January to cover 50 UK cities before the end of 2014 and eventually grow it to 98 percent of the population by the end of 2015. Once Three’s 4G service has been switched on in the customer’s town, an over-the-air software upgrade is all that’s required, so long as the customer already has s 4G-capable phone.http://thenextweb.com/uk/2013/08/29/three-finally-unveils-4g-rollout-plans-the-stage-is-now-set-for-uks-4g-future/

iaBecause they are in the future, New Zealand has decided to ban software patents. A new bill passed by a vote of 117-4 that states that a computer program is "not an invention." This designation as "not an invention" would make programs ineligible for patent protection. However, processes are still patentable if the computer program is a way of implementing a patentable process. http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/08/in-historic-vote-new-zealand-bans-software-patents/

Hugo Barra’s Farewell Letter to Googlehttp://allthingsd.com/20130828/hugo-barras-farewell-letter-to-google/

.

- Android's Hugo Barra is leaving Google and will be headed for Xiaomi
- Barra was the VP of product management for Android (you might remember him as the guy who demoed the new Nexus 7 at launch)
- AllThingsD says that Barra tendered his resignation before the end of romantic relationship with someone else at the company, who is apparently now seeing Sergey Brin
- ATD's sources say that Barra's decision to leave the company is unrelated to that personal situation
- Barra announced on Google+ that he will be joining Xiaomi in China as the VP of Xiaomi Global and the Next Web says Barra will officially start in October
- Back in March, Android head Andy Rubin left the Android team, but not Google. Sundar Pichai, head of Chrome and Apps became head of Android.
- What you should know about Xiamoi - they've been known as "the Apple of China" and they produce affordable smartphones. The company has also built a reputation around its brand
- Xiamoi also makes MiUI, which is a custom version of Android that lets the user personalize their phone via themes

Q: Where do you see Android going at Google with both Rubin and Barra gone? Could Xiaomi with Barra become a global powerhouse?

iaSkype confirms 3D video calls are under development http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23866593

.

- In an interview with the BBC, Microsoft's corporate VP of Skype Mark Gillett says Skype is working on 3D video calls
- Gillett says that the company has "done work in the labs looking at the capability of 3D-screens and 3D capture"
- He says that customers seem to have lots of 3D capable displays, but the capture devices are not there yet
- Gillett says "We have it in the lab, we know how to make it work and we're looking at the ecosystem of devices and their capability to support it in order to make a decision when we might think about bringing something like that to market."
- He is unsure when we'll see 3D cameras on cellphones
- Gillett also said that Skype will remain cross-platform and will still support things like the Sony PS4

Q: 3D video chats - is that something you want to do?

Hi

You were talking about brain to brain control and video games on yesterday's show.

Have none of you guys seen the movie Gamer? No, I don't blame you if you have not; it was a terrible movie.

Anyway, in that movie, rock star gamers control convicts who fight each other to the death. Is this where were headed with this technology?

Or are smart robots going to control our bodies in the future world of the singularity?

I don't know which is worse?!

Love the show

George

[For TNT please mention one or more of these sites and the features listed...]

http://justanotherbeerblog.com/ - Great beer blog!

This blog template was customized with an interesting banner and background color - and it even looks great on mobile devices - as the site reconfigures the design. (may demo this by squeezing screen size down for a moment)

Check out the glorious beer gallery - in the Quench Your Visual Thirst section! The slider makes it easy to browse images, and their Instagram auto-publish feature makes it super simple to update your visuals on the go.

ProXPN

Introduction/Problem:

More than ever, your online freedom and privacy are under threat. Governments and ISPs want to control what you can and cannot see, while keeping a record of everything you do. Plus that “free Wi-Fi” at the coffee house, hotel, and airport is putting you at risk, because your passwords and sensitive data can be intercepted more easily than you might think.

Personal Experience:

Share your personal experience or concern with ISP spying or using public Wi-Fi. Mention any recent news regarding CISPA, PIPA, “six strikes,” etc.

Solution:

proXPN is a global VPN (virtual private network) that works with almost any internet connection. It creates a secure, encrypted tunnel through which all of your online data passes back and forth. Any online application can work with proXPN—including your web browser, email, file sharing, and instant messaging programs. proXPN keeps everything you do online hidden from prying eyes, disguising your physical location and giving you unfettered access to any website or online service, no matter where you live or travel to.

Talking Points

Complete online privacy through a 512-bit encryption tunnel.

Works via OpenVPN or PPTP. You choose!

● Protect yourself against your ISP’s “six strikes” rule.

● Bypass internet filtering and blocked websites.

● Bypass geographical restrictions for internet content and online video with worldwide servers in the US, UK, Asia, and more!

● proXPN’s software for Windows & Mac offers advanced controls, allowing you to select the programs and ports you want to anonymously route through proXPN’s servers.

● proXPN also works with your iOS or Android device, allowing you to use your data plan or public/corporate Wi-Fi with complete and total privacy on the go.

There’s a new proXPN app for Android in the Google Play store that supports Open VPN.

World Class customer support

Steve Gibson gave it a great review on Security Now!

Call to Action (Verbatim)

Go to proxpn.com/twit for more information and to sign-up. proXPN premium accounts are normally $9.95 a month or $74.95 for an entire year. We’ve got a special offer: use the code TNT to receive 20% off for the lifetime of your account. That’s less than $5 bucks a month on the yearly plan! If you’re not satisfied, you can cancel within 7 days for a full refund.
