tmA phishing attack successfully gained access to a resellers admin controls of domain-name registrar MelbourneIT yesterday. Attackers were able to redirect The New York Times domain name to a site reportedly infected with malware. Other domains registered with MelbourneIT were similarly infected including twimg.com the domain for Twitter's image hosting service. Twitter.com itself had a registry lock in place so was not affected. As Domain Name servers refresh their caches which sometimes last up to 24 hours, proper redirection is being restored.http://techcrunch.com/2013/08/27/syrian-electronic-army-apparently-hacks-dns-records-of-twitter-new-york-times-through-registrar-melboune-it/

slHTC may be working on a China-specific mobile OS, reports The Wall Street Journal. The publication also says Cher Wang is closely overseeing the project and is working directly with the state authorities to see it meets approval. All this points to a completely new OS and not an Android fork, one that's tightly integrated with China specific services, such as Weibo. http://www.engadget.com/2013/08/28/wsj-htc-working-on-china-specific-mobile-os/

iaApple just purchased another company - this time it's a Swedish company called AlgoTrim. AlgoTrim technology includes lossless compression algorithms that also reduce the amount of memory a phone would need needed to perform tasks. For the past few years, AlgoTrim was focused on Android-based phones, but that'll probably stop since Apple doesn't seem to be Android-friendly. http://www.engadget.com/2013/08/28/apple-algotrim/

tmThe Nexus 4 phone just got really inexpensive. The 8GB model is on sale through the US Google Play Store for $199, while the 16GB model is $249. Doesn't sound cheap to you? Those are prices without a contract. Similar price drops of about 25% apply in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, Korea, and the UK.http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/27/4665960/google-drops-nexus-4-price-now-starts-at-199

slParallels is bringing its virtualization software to the iPad - the first one dedicated specifically to making software and documents from Windows and Mac machines work in a “native” way on the iPad, complete with iOS gestures. The new app, which is priced at $79.99 for a one-year subscription covering one device (each subsequent device that gets virtualized costs another $79.99), comes with a number of features like an app launcher, app switcher, and dedicated keyboard.http://techcrunch.com/2013/08/27/parallels-launches-access-for-ipad-a-virtualization-app-that-gets-windows-mac-apps-to-work-like-native-ios-apps/

iaFacebook released its first "Global Government Requests Report" on Tuesday. It details official requests from 74 countries covering the first six months of 2013. Facebook didn't explain why the requests were made, but disclosed the number of total requests for each country. The U.S. led the pack by asking for information on over 20,000 users. Facebook said it hopes to publish similar reports every six months from now on and hopes future reports will contain more information about requests they receive from law enforcement. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23852230

tmAndy Palmer, Nissan’s executive vice president, told reporters yesterday that Nissan will be able to bring multiple, affordable fully autonomous vehicles to the market by 2020. Nissan demonstrated the cars which they have developed in-house, although they say they don't preclude the possibility of working with Google or others. Nissan's system does not have to be connected to the Internet.http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-08-27/nissan-sets-goal-of-bringing-first-self-driving-cars-by-2020.html

slNintendo is releasing a new version of the 3DS, the Nintendo 2DS, a cheaper 2D-only handheld console compatible with 3DS and DS games. At $129.99, it is $50 cheaper than the 3DS. The company also announced a $50 price cut for the Wii U, ahead of the releases of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The 2DS will retain the same features as the 3DS, except of course, the 3D display. It has the same stylus, Wi-Fi and comes with a 4GB SD card. 3DS games are still more expensive than iOS or Android games, but Nintendo is betting on that $130 price tag being worth it.http://techcrunch.com/2013/08/28/nintendo-reveals-the-hideous-130-2ds-will-cut-wii-u-price-to-299/

tmVic Gundotra announced on Google Plus that Google Hangouts is switching to 720p HD video. A select group of users may already have access. Google will drop H.264 for its own VP8. The new codec will require less processing power, which should enable most computers to handle 10 720p video streams at onceas well as higher-quality, lower-bit-rate streams across the board. The H.264 plugin will still be supported for browsers that do not support VP8. The next step is an upgrade to WebRTChttp://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/08/google-hangouts-upgrading-to-hd-video-chat-switching-to-vp8-webrtc/

Nissan Sets Goal of Introducing First Self-Driving Cars by 2020http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-08-27/nissan-sets-goal-of-bringing-first-self-driving-cars-by-2020.html

.

- Nissan said it plans to offer cars w/ self-driving tech by 2020
- Nissan's Exec VP Andy Palmer said "Nissan Motor Co. pledges that we will be ready to bring multiple affordable, energy efficient, fully autonomous-driving vehicles to the market by 2020,"
- Palmer said Nissan will build a test ground in 2014 to test out its autonomous cars
- NIssan demoed' a self-driving Leaf that used a combo of radar sensors, cameras, and lasers to navigate. During the demo, the Leaf was able to slow itself down to a stop for a red light and automatically swerved when a dummy pedestrian jumped in front of the car.
- All of the technology to self-drive is in the car -- there's no need to connect to the Internet like Google's cars do.
- Palmer said that the challenge is not the technology, but the regulatory framework
- Nissan doesn't work with Google on its self-driving cars, but Palmer said "I can't preclude working with Google."

Q: In the year 2020, do you expect to be in a self-driving car or will regulatory hold ups stop that from happening?

Time Warner Cable’s new Xbox app won’t count against data capshttp://gigaom.com/2013/08/27/time-warner-cables-new-xbox-app-wont-count-against-data-caps/

.

- TWC TV app for Xbox Live, which was announced back in June, is now available for download from the Xbox Live Marketplace.
- available to viewers with an existing Time Warner Cable subscription in the U.S. as well as an Xbox Live Gold membership, the TWC TV app will allow users to access up to 300 TV channels, including AMC, BBC World News, Bravo, the Cartoon Network, CNN, Comedy Central and the Food Network, depending on their specific subscription. It also enables users to navigate through TV shows, music and movies using voice and gesture control through the Kinect peripheral.
- Verizon & Comcast already have similiar apps in place
- Time Warner Cable acknowledged this content won't apply to data caps. spokesperson told gigaom: “This isn’t an Internet offering.”
- Comcast made same argument after not counting Netflix app viewing against data caps: any videos viewed via the app would be delivered via the company’s private IP networks, and not through the public internet.
- ISPs can provide internet-like services but facilitate those services over the ISP’s own managed networks, to sidestep regulation
q: isp avoids regulation, customer avoids data caps... what needs to change?

Robert Jones RIP YouTube Video Responseshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Jv7v_rNpM8I#t=34VIDEO play from 0:34 to 0:59

.

- Google is dumping video responses from YouTube starting September 12
- Google says there was a 0.0004% click-through rate on video responses submitted by users.
- The notice was posted on YouTube's Creator blog. The video responses were supposed to be a way to create a conversation and interaction with viewers
- Now YT says the best thing to do for fans is to use the video titles, hashtags, or descriptions to associate them with the video they are responding to. Then it's up the creators to search for those videos
- YT is also working on sharing video links in the comments
- In the comment section of the YT blog post, YouTube content partner Robert Jones claims that YouTube is trying to kill the community. Jones says video responses were a way to get around the limits of YT comments (no threaded comments & 500 character limit).

Q: YT killing video responses -- is this really horrible for the YT community?

video responses made thus far will still remain, just will no longer show up beneath the video towards which it was created

Hi Tom Sarah and Iyaz,

I have been thinking a lot lately about what possible moves apple has left after we see the iPhone 5s launch and other phones in general (android and windows too). after seeing the Ubuntu Edge and thinking about that for a while It would make perfect sense if for the iPhone 6 to include the ability to use the phone as a stand in desktop or a similar form factor.

It would make sense since after the 5s and new iOS skin upgrades that they will need something new and with a major wow factor to keep people interested. they already have thunderbolt which is daisy chainable and the new mobile chips keep outpacing our predictions so this feat could easily be achievable.

As far as putting something like OS X on it I don’t think they would just yet. Instead I think they would have an OS X like UI for it in desktop mode which would also talk to the phone directly like the edge.
peace and love

Shayne, Victoria B.C. Canada
