slHTC is in dire straits financially and has turned to Iron Man for help. Robert Downey Jr. will appear in a new marketing campaign playing on what the initials actually mean. No, they won't use the "Has to Change" moniker many critics bandy about. The first video with Downey Jr. has him saying the phrase "Humongous Tinfoil Catamaran" But my favorite "Hold This Cat"is also apparently in the works. HTC actually stands for High Tech Computer. We'll see if this campaign can make it stand for "sells a lot of phones."http://techcrunch.com/2013/08/12/has-to-change/

iaThe Bitcoin Foundation says an Android OS flaw renders "all Android wallets generated to date vulnerable to theft." The issue is within the Android OS itself and the way it generates secure random numbers. If you're using a wallet app where you don't control the private keys like Coinbase or Mt. Gox, you're not affected. The Bitcoin Foundation says to update your wallet apps as the updates become available and that key rotation is necessary. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23664743

- Internet: 1,826 Petabytes per day. NSA touches about 1.6%. 0.025% reviewed. NSA analysts look at 0.00004% of world’s traffic. "Put another way, if a standard basketball court represented the global collection would be represented by an area smaller than a dime on that basketball court."
- Or put another way, NSA analysts "touch" 29.216 PB/day actively look at 7.3 MB a day.
- "NSA does not and will not use a relationship with a foreign intelligence service to ask that service to do what NSA is itself prohibited by law from doing."
- NSA personnel must report not acting consistently with law, policy, or procedure.
- President Obama: "You're hearing about the prospect [that] these things could be abused. Part of the reason they're not being abused is because these checks are in place."
--- "We collect 30 petabytes a day but we only read two years of emails a day and you shouldn't worry because nobody has caught us breaking any rules yet and you can believe us because we monitor ourselves and we'd never lie to you."

- White House also promised it would make public a 2011 FISA Court ruling that found some spying unconstitutional, and is set to release on August 12 to the Electronic Frontier Foundation
- Independent advisory group to review surveillance and publish a public report.
Q: Feel better?
ACLU’s Jameel Jaffer testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee: The FISA Amendments Act allows the government to conduct electronic surveillance without indicating to the FISA Court whom it intends to target or which facilities it intends to monitor, and without making any showing to the court—or even making an internal executive determination— that the target is a foreign agent or engaged in terrorism.

Tom and Posse,

I actually just finished a two week experiment of trying to use web apps exclusively on my phone, so I was really interested to hear about Amazon's inclusion of web apps within their app store. Iyaz made a great point when he talked about discoverability, my main problem was finding any kind of web apps outside of Facebook and Twitter. In fact before Amazon threw its hat in the ring, one of the most common results of searching for Web Apps was Apple's defunct web app index, featuring such classics as "Carbon Footprint Calculator" (staff selection), none of which have been updated since 2010.

If Amazon can put together some quality apps and find ways to let developers get paid in-app (with Amazon getting their cut of course), it could really open the door for mobile web app design, which seems to have stagnated for the most part. While native apps will always have an edge in responsiveness and UI hooks for an individual platform (for example the Soundcloud app give you lock screen controls, while their mobile site, well designed though it is, does not), it would be nice to have a variety of platform agnostic web apps that give a modicum of functionality.
