slGoogle wants to build its own streaming TV service, so says the Wall Street Journal. The report says Google's been meeting with media companies to negotiate for TV channels streamed over broadband connections, to compete with companies like Comcast or Time Warner. Google already has its TV platform in set-top boxes and TVs, and its gigabit fiber up and running in a few cities, but it would need licensing deals to carry media channels via video stream, and could face a price premium as the NKOTB.http://arstechnica.com/business/2013/07/google-in-talks-to-create-its-own-streaming-live-tv-service/

tmWell Google Glass is all browns up now. It has its first security flaw. The security researchers at Lookout have discovered a security flaw that let them capture data being sent from the device to the Web without the user's knowledge. Google Glass always looks for QR Codes and decodes them. It also connects to WIFI networks encoded in QR Codes. You know where this is going. Researchers created a QR Code that got Glass to connect to a WiFi access point where a man in the middle attack could be conducted. The flaw was disclosed to Google and has since been fixed.http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2013/jul/17/google-glass-hacked-vulnerability-image

- WSJ reports Google is looking into launching an online version of pay TV
- says Google recently approached media companies about licensing their content for an Internet TV service that would stream traditional TV programming
- NYT says No deals are imminent.
- In at least one case, Google has provided a demonstration of the product,

- To get decent rates for over the top TV services, the Journal believes that Google and other companies will have to accept the standard programming bundles that exist today.
- The Journal says this is Google's second go at this - two years ago Google tried to set up a similar service
- WSJ reiterates that Intel is working on a service that Intel. News: Intel plans to launch by the end of the year (well publicized), also mentions Sony is also working on one.
- Sony: status not clear, but Sony could launch its service BEFORE intel (?!). Sony plans to stream its services to Sony devices like the PlayStation, TV sets and BD players (playstation tv trademark anyone?)

- NYT spotlights ,Cox Communications, is already testing selling a bundle of nearly 100 channels to its Internet customers (who don't have cable TV).

Q: Will television over the Internet be any good if it's just a new way to get bundled TV?

tmAppeals court refuses to rehear Aereo case, service can keep streaminghttp://gigaom.com/2013/07/16/appeals-court-refuses-to-rehear-aereo-case-service-will-keep-streaming/

.

US 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals refused CBS et. al petition for 'en band' appeal of an earlier ruling that Aereo is legal
- earlier decision was 2-1, CBS wanted full panel of judges to rehear
- a poll of judges revealed the majority did not wish to rehear
- Judge Denny Chin dissented (again) calling Aereo a 'sham'
"Indeed, the hardware and technology in Cablevision and the antennas and wiring at issue here are fast becoming obsolete in this era of the “Cloud” and wireless technology. Courts should follow Congress’s lead and resist the urge to look “under the hood” at how these processes technically work"
- Legal not done. Boston case from Hearst just started. California decision against Aereo killer could lead to Supreme Court
Q: Should judges ignore the technical workings? They aren't very good at understanding them sometimes.

tmMicrosoft on NSA data requests: 'we need the Attorney General to uphold the constitution'http://www.theverge.com/2013/7/16/4529124/microsoft-nsa-us-attorney-general-surveillance

.

Responding to government legal demands for customer datahttp://blogs.technet.com/b/microsoft_on_the_issues/archive/2013/07/16/responding-to-government-legal-demands-for-customer-data.aspx

.

Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith: "we do not provide any government with direct access to emails or instant messages. Full stop."
- "We do not provide any government with the ability to break the encryption, nor do we provide the government with the encryption keys," Smith says. "When we are legally obligated to comply with demands, we pull the specified content from our servers where it sits in an unencrypted state, and then we provide it to the government agency."
- Enterprise users get more protection than individuals as MS refers govt to customers directly
- MS asked USAG to personally take action" to allow the company to share as much info as possible about how it handles NSLs "We need the Attorney General to uphold the constitution."
- Common thread. 1. Company provides dirt access as shown in this NSA document 2. Company denies direct access says it only provides specific access after legal request 3. Company wishes it could say more to make this clear
Q: This is pretty clearly not just a denial or MS would not imply that the AG is not upholding the constitution. So what do YOU think is really going on here?

- Jefferies analyst Peter Misek says Apple’s manufacturing partners start making iPhone 5s later this month. ATD sources familiar with the company’s plans confirm
- apple already producing lower-cost iPhone. priced $300-$400 unsubsidized. 25-30M units total, even split between 5s & lower-cost iPhone. Misek says still too high to compete with the truly low-end handsets popular in emerging markets (& apple probably doesn't care)
- mid-range market has huge potential... SHOW CHART BOTTOM OF ATD ARTICLE
International Data Corporation (IDC) numbers: Apple sold a total of 120k smartphones in India in Q1, a 47% decrease from the 230k sold in the last quarter of 2012.
- Apple launched iPhone 5 in India in November 2012. Healthy sales figures during its initial launch period. Since then Apple launched marketing campaign, discount schemes, & monthly instalment options to try to push sales
- despite all that, Apple’s market share down from 4.7% to 2.1%. Samsung had market share of 32.7% over the same period.
Q: low-cost iPhone actually mid-tier phone that will be popular in India/emerging markets?

Greetings TNT Crew,

I am an international listener from Italy, and I am among those who don't care much about US specific discussions, mainly all those about telephony operators, but in yesterdays show, you just blew my mind:

The new plans with a Galaxy S4 will cost the users from $90/$140 per month !!!! are your operators crazy ??

Last October I bought a Galaxy S3, paid its upfront a total was €480. My plan is a simple one without monthly minutes or messages (I use Line for free messaging), and it includes 1GB of data, that works with Skype and other audio/video apps and tethering, and this costs me only just €5 / month.

For 2000 minutes of calls, 500 message, and 2GB internet traffic I have to pay €10 / month, way below your monthly fees.

On the other hand, the unlocked devices here cost more: an unlocked Galaxy S4 costs around €650, iPhone 5 (base model) costs €730, which is much higher than unlocked phones there at your end.

Just wanted to write my thoughts about this subject...

- Rami
