slThe US's surveillance court has created a secret body of law giving the National Security Agency the power to collect data on Americans in order to follow not only terrorism suspects, but also people possibly involved in nuclear proliferation, espionage and cyberattacks, say officials. Some of these findings are over 100 pages long, and reveal that the court has taken on more power by assessing broad constitutional questions and establishing judicial precedents, without public scrutiny, according to current and former officials familiar with the court’s classified decisions.http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/07/us/in-secret-court-vastly-broadens-powers-of-nsa.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

.

iaThe Washington Post reports that there are a group of lawyers from the FBI and the departments of Defense, Justice and Homeland Security whose job was "ensuring that surveillance requests got fulfilled quickly and confidentially." The agreements didn't allow surveillance, but made sure companies had a secure way to give data over to the U.S. government. The first major agreement was the "Network Security Agreement" signed back in September 2003 by tier 1 carier Global Crossing. http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/technology/agreements-with-private-companies-protect-us-access-to-cables-data-for-surveillance/2013/07/06/aa5d017a-df77-11e2-b2d4-ea6d8f477a01_story.html

iaBloomberg reports that way back in 2010, Don Mattrick was in active negotiations with Marc Pinkus. The goal of the talks was for Microsoft to acquire Zynga. slWestern governments are set to target a range of tax loopholes used by technology giants including Apple, Amazon, and Google as part of an international drive to tackle corporate tax avoidance, a draft action plan seen by Reuters said. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which advises its mainly rich nation members on economic and tax policies, has been charged by the G20 group of countries with formulating measures to stop big companies shifting profits into tax havens.http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/07/05/us-tax-oecd-avoidance-idUSBRE9640VH20130705

iaNew York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says that Verizon is violating a state order because Verizon is telling customers in parts of Fire Island to accept wireless phone service instead of repairs to landlaines. Service was disrupted in that area due to Hurricane Sandy. Schneiderman says Verizon is trying to "depart form a century of telephone service regulation" and wants to fine the company $100,000 per day. Verizon says it hasn't violated the state order and its offer for wireless service is optional. http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/07/verizon-would-end-century-of-regulation-by-killing-wireline-phone-says-ny-ag/

slResearchers at the MIT Media Lab have managed to accomplish a visual family tree of your gmail life with a tool called Immersion. it's a web app that — once you grant it permission to do so — digs through your email history to piece together a "people-centric view of your email life." What does Immersion look at, exactly? Only the senders, recipients (including those CC'd), and timestamps within your email archives. It steers clear of subject lines and the actual bodies of your messages. Still, the end result is fairly impressive depending on how much Immersion has to work with. http://www.theverge.com/2013/7/7/4501542/mit-tool-immersion-connects-dots-of-your-life-with-gmail-metadata

iaGPS company Garmin announced the HUD which will place navigation instructions on your windshield. The HUD is a small device you'd place on your dashboard that projects your instructions on a piece of film on the glass. The HUD itself isn't a GPS - you'll need to pair it with Garmin's StreetPilot or Navigon apps for phones. It'll cost about $130 and is coming this summer. http://www.theverge.com/2013/7/8/4503280/garmins-portable-heads-up-display

.

- The Hollywood Reporter says that there are three major suitors left for Hulu
- They are: DirecTV, the Chernin Group and Guggenheim Digital Media
- The Hollywood Reporter took a look at each one and what they would do with Hulu

On DirecTV:
- the company could use it a a stand-alone business or create the best TV everywhere app.
- DirecTV could use Hulu to keep its subscribers. According to Macquarie Capital, if 1/3rd of DirecTV subscribers signed on to Hulu, it could raise DirecTV revenue by 3%

Guggenheim:
- this is a private equity buyer headed by former Yahoo Ross Levinsohn (he also was an original architect of Hulu while at Fox Interactive Media). Analyst Richard Greenfield said this would add a point of distribution for Hulu's current owners.
- This option could allow Hulu to "retain its entrepreneurial spirits" since it's not tied down to old deals
The Chernin Group
- Headed by Peter Chernin with AT&T's money
- AT&T could use Hulu as a TV everywhere platform
- Chernin has existing relationships with many content players since he was the president & COO of NewsCorp

Q: Who will end up with Hulu? How do you expect the service to change depending on who buys it?
