Learning is an intergal aspect of all of TMF's five grant categories. It has strong coaching and mentorship components which consist of one on one contact between mentors/experts and mentees/learners through ideation, academies, master classes, short courses and pre-story, mid-term and post-story learning sessions (read more on our website;

This call aims to identify mentors and experts or resource people who will share their professional and personal skills and experiences with media institutions and journalists to help them develop their knowledge and skills through constructive criticism offered in an atmosphere of openness and transparency, mutual trust, respect and willingness to learn. Actual mentorship modalities will vary depending on the type of grant provided, with the formal period of mentorship and learning running between three months and two years. Mentors and experts joining TMF's pool will be provided with TMF’s mentoring manual and learning curriculum respectively. They will also be required to attend an orientation session.
Mentors should have the ability to support journalists to conceptualise and customise story ideas through TMF's ideation process as well as guide and advise them to enable them develop quality media products and strengthen their awareness and understanding of investigative and public interest journalism. They should also practically support journalists' continuous learning towards improved writing, audio-visual production and blogging. For media institutions, mentors and experts shall be involved in media transformation in the areas of content production, business and governance.They should be able to provide specific support such as in sales, marketing and advertising as well as editorial towards enabling media outlets to develop and apply relevant and productive business models, forfinancial sustainability.
