All retail businesses must charge shoppers a minimum of 10 cents for each compliant checkout bag.
Use the anonymous reporting form below to report a retail business that is still distributing plastic bags at checkout or that did not charge 10 cents for checkout bags; restaurants and other food-related businesses do not have to comply until October 1, 2013.
In an effort to reduce the impacts of plastic bags to our environment and move closer to our goal of zero waste, the City and County of San Francisco passed the Extended Bag Reduction Ordinance, which requires all retail businesses eliminate the distribution of single use plastic checkout bags and to charge shoppers a minimum of 10 cents for each paper or reusable bag provided at checkout. NOTE: certified compostable plastic checkout bags are compliant, but do not require a 10 cent charge until October 1st, 2013.
The 10 cent bag charge can be avoided if you refuse a bag or bring your own.
