Join us for South Carolina Science Council's premiere professional development event. The South Carolina Science Council (SC)2 Conference can only occur because of the talented professionals that choose to present their work at our conference!

Please consider sharing your specialty with your colleagues. In exchange for your workshop or presentation, practicing educators (serving as the lead presenter) will receive a reduced conference registration rate if your proposal is accepted. We'll provide a personal discount code for you to use once we approve your presentation in our system.

Conference sessions will take place in the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

2017 Conference Theme: Science in Action

It has never been so important, in South Carolina and the country, that all of our students receive an excellent K-12 science education. To ensure high quality experiences and learning for all students, SC teachers must be intentional in planning and designing learning instruction that meets the needs of diverse groups of students. The goal of the conference is to energize, empower, and equip teachers to impact instruction in significant ways.

To ensure high quality experiences and learning for all students, the 40th Annual South Carolina Science Council Conference will explore how key focus strands build on, overlap with, and support one another in the science classroom. The conference will highlight sessions within the following strands, though sessions falling outside these strands are welcomed.

Disciplinary Literacy:
Sessions will focus on improving the educator’s, and in turn the student’s, knowledge and understanding of reading, writing, speaking, and listening to deepen one's understanding of scientific content. Disciplinary practices ensure that students have opportunities to read, write, think, and talk as scientists.

Sessions will focus on best practices and instructional approaches that support the Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs) and crosscutting concepts in the SC Academic Standards and Performance Indicators for Science as well as STEM/STEAM programs.

Resources and Opportunities:
Sessions will focus on opportunities and resources available to educators and students to connect concepts being learned in the classroom to real-world applications or business and industry connections. These sessions focus on connecting science practices to the Profile of a SC Graduate.

Assessment that Informs Instruction:
Sessions will focus on leveraging the data received from formative and summative assessment to inform instruction and differentiate strategies to meet the needs of all learners.

Project and Problem-Based Learning:
Sessions will focus on engaging students through contextual, authentic scenarios that challenge students to research and design solutions to complex problems while deepening their content knowledge.
