Perseverance Award

(GRADES 3 TO GRADE 12 STUDENTS ONLY)

Description: Perseverance is defined by Merriam-Webster as “the continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition.” Perseverance is an honorable attribute to have because it shows determination and a strong will to succeed. The recipient of this honor is one who has maintained a positive mindset despite challenges, and persists to achieve both personal and academic goals. This award will be given to ONE student at each grade level between grades 3 through 12. To be eligible for this award, a student must:

1. Be in any grade between Grade 3 and 12
2. Currently reside or have resided in a shelter OR have been displaced during the 2015/2016 school year
3. Demonstrate a commitment to learning despite tremendous hardship by showing remarkable growth and/or success
4. Possess an overall average of 85%
5. Submit an essay answering the following question: Identify one major challenge that you have experienced, and based on the definition of “perseverance” as written above, explain how you have overcome this challenge in the amount of words specified for your grade below:
Grades 3 to 5: 350 – 500 words
Grades 6 to 8: 500 – 750 words
Grades 9 to 12: 750 – 1000 words
