Previous uses of EdCamp in PD and other ideas:
- Not a full ed-camp model but did about 1.5 hours, used a board model. Teachers knew in advance what types of sessions upcoming. People were jazzed about it! First time and very positive. Doing it again in April! Perhaps multidistrict PD day coming in future. Themes were not just technology, used Google forms and had some volunteers in advance, including reading skills, math, “what awesome things are happening and let’s hear about them!” How did it work with the “dead wood?” So it was mandatory, some needed to be coaxed along, but majority were really positive. - How do you make the space for folks to vote with their feet when it’s a mandatory meeting? Interesting balance. A bit more formalized and the half-day can be hard to structure. Again, pre-seeded some themes, about half the topics. Good time for a district to share and generate ideas. Didn’t necessarily have time to do two sessions of idea-generating, morning and afternoon---you can end up with some dud sessions. This is a model that needs to be practiced to get a feel.
- Padlet can be a tool for getting ideas up there beforehand---teacher driven. Stress that it is NOT a presentation, can be discussion, also the norms. Getting admins on board, with support this can be key. Snowshoeing could be a session! Total numbers about 150, good for diversity. (Anne)
- Outcomes can be a question at the outset. Maybe require each teacher to report out if there is a fear of teachers not participating. Linking shared notes off of schedule is a good idea.
- Sometimes need to get outside the insular setting of a single district, maybe think of reaching into neighboring districts, or even K-12. Even for reaching into other facilitators and tech directors, sharing tech integrators between districts. (Exchange program) More of a sharing culture can be beneficial.
- Theme locations for concurrent PD across districts/sites. Hearing from folks who are not your regular techie people or facilitators can be inspiring.
- Low-stakes non-professional development opportunity can be a good intro for folks new to the idea. Helps them loosen up with the unstructured model! Cross-pollinate with a shared breakfast or lunch, to get out of your compartment. (Alice)
- Build in some time to connect beƒore sessions (like at breakfast or some chat time)
- Have sessions in the am and hands on “playground” in the afternoon
- Think about sessions encouraging physical activity as well
- Use plants in the audience! Pre-plant them. Teachers LOVE choice in PD. And if there’s not something that you can use, come up with something else works very well.
- Starting with a blank schedule can help, because there is room for us all to contribute.
- Are we assuming too much about comfort level in “presenter/facilitator” role? Some teachers are less comfortable teaching other teachers. Do we need PD on how to teach each other? Getting them to feel LESS like experts (hard for teachers!) is key. What are you struggling with? Be inquisitive and investigate---moving towards a model where failure is OK and part of learning (FOR TEACHERS/STUDENTS/EVERYBODY!) Promote it at faculty meetings and use that time to explain the process/model.
- Schedule board with stickies lowers bar of entry for participants (especially non-techies)
- If one person shows up in the room, you could still have a great conversation about a shared interest. You don’t even necessarily need a topic, some will just generate out of current topics. Not about who is a great presenter, you just get to show up and see what happens.
- Or you could do an edCamp or new learning morning, then break out into interest groups for work times in afternoon, time to explore, practice, play. Nice idea for a blended model.
- Interesting that we have different expectations for our colleagues than we do for our students. Little time for collaboration with colleagues means that teachers are hungry just to connect with each other. Perhaps build in time for this at the start of a session (like we do with kids!).
- Open to combining districts for PD, perhaps reach out to Falmouth if your superintendent is also open. Use tech tools to have virtual PD across districts.

- How does Skyping in to a PD session work, for both live and virtual? Some have used Google Hangouts but all were on G-Hangout. This presents some interesting challenges. Google Hangouts on Air at Falmouth last year, Sunday nights, same folks showing up. Some colleagues get afraid of change…
- Virtual meetings--directed training for admins to be productive with using tech.
- EdCamp model for administrators! Invite more directly to the superintendents and principals, other admins for future edCamps. (George Couros, Peter DeWitt)
- Help docs for “how edCamp looks like”--what does it mean to be a presenter/facilitator? Hard to describe and articulate what happens.
