Thanks so much for your interest in scheduling a Closed Loop Lab with Plant Chicago. Labs are best paired with a tour of The Plant. Closed Loop Labs are a flat rate of $100 and free for school groups from Back of the Yards (60609 area code). We offer Labs Tuesday - Saturday from 10 am - 4 pm, given availability. Labs usually last roughly one hour in length.
We are unable to accommodate more than 30 students per lab, due to space restrictions. We require a 1 to 15 chaperon to student ratio. Chaperons are welcome to join free of charge (a reasonable amount of chaperons!).
As of right now (more labs are in the developing stages) we offer Closed Loop Labs in the following subjects:
1.) Aquaponics: Delve deeper into the science behind aquaponics and learn more about the nitrogen system! Students build their own self-watering planter out of reclaimed materials.
2.) Native Pollinators: Learn about the importance of native pollinators for our food system! Students will build their own native pollinator habitat for solitary bees made out of reclaimed materials.
3.) Vermicomposting: Students will get the chance to build a worm bin for their classroom. Learn more about producers, decomposers and consumers with this interactive worm workshop.
4.) Water Chemistry: Students learn the science behind aquaponics, including the nitrogen cycle and importance of amounts of phosphates, ammonia, nitrites and nitrites within the water. Students test their water for various things, and talk about the need for healthy water.
Fill out the form below to start scheduling your visit. A Plant Chicago representative will reach out to you within the next week to coordinate your Lab. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions, comments and concerns!
