2014 PDX Pop Now! Compilation Listening Committee Application

Thank you for your interest in joining the listening committee for the 2014 PDX Pop Now! Compilation. It's our 11th year, and the comp is getting progressively more awesome.

We're excited to get you on board, but we want you to understand what you're getting into. By signing up below, you are expressing interest in helping to curate the 2014 PDX Pop Now! Compilation. We normally receive over 500 entries from local Portland bands. With the help of our Listening Committee, we narrow it down to a comp of around 40 songs. Don't worry, though — you won't have to judge all of them!

Our process depends on each of you listening to and forming an opinion on no more than 100 random, anonymous .mp3s. You'll have about 10 days to do it in early-mid March. That's ten (ish) songs a day! If that sounds like an unclimbable mountain, no hard feelings. But this may not be for you. If you're up for it, fantastic. Let's get going!

For those of you who are signing up: Please do not wait until the last minute to complete the voting process. Maybe listen to a few tracks on the bus ride to work! A couple more at lunch! A few more while you wait for some terrible TV show to start. We've made it possible for you to download the tracks for use with the media player of your choice. We can also burn you a CD if you don't have access to an .mp3 player.

We'll have a few people waiting in the wings as understudies, but they need to be given as much warning as possible that their services will be necessary. If you sign up for this and something calamitous happens, we get it, and we'll call one of them. Just let us know ASAP. But we want people who are as pumped as we are to work through a bunch of Portland music from the last year. If that's you, please fill out the fields below! Timeline

Submissions will be open until the end of February, and then we'll do our listening and voting in March. We'll go into production in April, spend May getting people excited about it, and then put it out in June. None of that would work without the listening committee.

    Conflicts

It is very important that our process be as anonymous and random as possible. For that reason, your tracks will be named by a coded number as identification during voting. In addition, we ask that you provide as complete a list as possible of any conflicts you might have. Please, be completely candid. A conflict could be: 1) Any band you're directly involved with as either a member or manager, whose music you would recognize, and whose inclusion on the compilation you have a vested interest in, or 2) Any band which contains close friends or family members, whose music you are familiar with. It all comes down to whether or not you would hear a track, recognize it, and have a hard time making an unbiased judgment call as to its quality. We hope that you are getting involved in this process as serious fans of music, with the ability to hear something interesting or special in a song, regardless of its supposed genre! We recognize that a complete list of conflicts might be difficult in this town, because it is relatively tight knit. Just do your best to give us what you think are the most important. We don't want to put you on the spot of having to judge yourself or your friends, for better or worse.
