Request for Qualifications - STEAM ENGINE USA Design Readiness Assessment Services

STEAM ENGINE USA is an initiative working to power the next generation of product development and manufacturing growth in Rhode Island and beyond. Focusing on the potential at the intersection of industrial design and advanced manufacturing, STEAM ENGINE USA’s goal is to help companies realize the benefits of new manufacturing technologies such as additive manufacturing and rapid prototype development, as well as spur new business development opportunities and innovations. Thanks to a Department of Defense grant to RI, STEAM ENGINE USA is being piloted in the defense-related manufacturing industry. Over the next few months we plan to conduct Design Readiness Assessments (DRA) with 20 Rhode Island and nearby states’ manufacturers that are part of the defense sector manufacturing supply chain.

The objectives of the Design Readiness Assessment will be to assess an existing manufacturer’s opportunity to enhance existing products, launch new products, or leverage existing Intellectual Property (I/P). Teams of business professionals will meet with the executive team from the 20 manufacturing firms to assess their capabilities across a wide spectrum of business measures; subsequently, the firms will receive an objective assessment of their design readiness, as well as a set of recommendations for such business practices as LEAN, skills development, supply chain management, business diversification, etc.

This is an opportunity for industrial designers, engineers, product development specialists, et al, to be a member of one of the assessment teams and to partner with local manufacturers in preparing them for the future.
